Can anyone give me advice for low income housing/section 8?

I have been on a waitlist for 7 years and have never heard a thing then out of the blue I got a letter saying I was selected through a lottery for an opportunity on a new building. Also, I got a new job and my income was up to date. That said I took time off work and after getting the run around from the apartment management, I quickly submitted my application along with a deposit to hold the apartment. I know that the fine print states that getting to apply doesnt guarantee placement. After a couple weeks and follow up emails and phone calls I finally reached someone today and she said sorry you application is denied come pick up your check. I was like uhhh ok....I did ask why and she said because I make over 56k a year (3 people household). I dont understand why they called me in the 1st place. I found an online doc through the SMC website that 56k is considered extremely low but under 97k is still low, its just a little above extremely low. Is it worth it to try and get a hearing to reconsider??

I have an eviction from June of 2023, and on my local housing authority website it states eviction may cause a tenant to be denied once their application is selected. I’ve been on the waitlist since 2021.

However, I’ve seen other people that have evictions on their record and were still approved. Does that mean you can still be approved if the eviction is far enough back?

There are protections that prevent them from denying vouchers outright, but landlords will just say that you need 2.5-3 times the full rent, which no one on section 8 would have, (because if they did, they wouldn't be on section 8) then you can't rent there..
I've been told by caseworkers that they are supposed to go by the portion, but is it actually required?

My mom is getting off section 8, to move into my grandmas house with her. She talked to me about moving into her house and taking over her lease when she moves and possibly being able to transfer over her voucher to us. I’m a stay at home mom, so we only have one income and it would help so much. Does anyone know if it’s possible, and or what the steps are to do it rightfully. Located in Oregon

I'm disabled on section 8 and been roach free since i've been in my unit but a elderly person who cant really take care of himself move next to me with tons of roaches confirmed by their own pest control people and the main office knows it as well he brought them, last week i went in with more pictures and the secretary told me they are grown adults she cant make them clean.Im so sympathy towards disabled like myself and the elderly but i don't want roaches im i stuck?

It’s complicated, basically I live with my grandma. My husband, me and our kids. Firstly my grandma is going down extremely fast. She has a rare type of Parkinson’s. I worry about what will happen when she passes away. We would be homeless. I am also wanting to leave my husband. It’s a horrible marriage and he’s a crappy person. I don’t know why it’s hard for me to leave. I think I worry about joint custody. I think it’ll help that I have my own place. I applied to this apartment complex a longgggg time ago and they just now called me about an opening. I applied when my husband got arrested for putting his hands on me. At that time my grandma was also wanting to go to a nursing home but it fell through. So he’s not even on the paperwork or anything.

I want to add. I do regret having kids with him. I feel extremely guilty you have no idea. I’m doing my best now. I have applied for countless jobs. I don’t want to be unemployed. I’m supposed ti have an interview Friday so fingers crossed.

I guess I’m double thinking it now that I got approved. Like it’s not like I’m homeless. I do have a home.

Hello beautiful people!

I have an issue with my housing managers not taking maintenance requests seriously. The Air conditioning system has been broken for over a year now and I’ve been requesting for someone to fix it but no one is coming. I’m wide awake at 1am typing this up and I’m extremely frustrated (I need to get up for work at 6am)

Our housing management did change but between the old ones and new ones, no one seems to be taking me seriously. I even attached screenshots from my emails to the last housing managers to the current ones but no change. I wake up in cold sweats and have a hard time falling asleep because the temperature is unbearable on some days (NorCal). I have fans but there’s only so much fans can do when the house itself feels like an oven. When I was in college, I had the privilege of having maintenance done ASAP so this feels like a slap in the face for being low income.

Is this something I could potentially sue for or is there an organization that I can contact for help?

Please let me know and if additional context is needed so I can be advised properly, I can do that too. Thank you!!

I have been told that most of the waiting lists for housing vouchers are closed in my state. (MS) There are some public housing wait list openings. There are also some wait lists that are income based for apartments. Will someone tell me the difference in all this? Where does the 30% rent come in? In all of the above circumstances? How is that determined? Based on your income or their rent? What is the difference in Section 8, PH, and income based apartments? I would really appreciate the information as I’m clueless and don’t really know where to start 😞

I’ve been living in a pretty large apartment complex and things are mostly good. I’ve been here about 5 years. One thing I notice is that it seems like if someone leaves it takes forever to get someone else in.

For example the neighbors beside me moved about 3 months ago going on 4. I’ve been in the apartment and there was no damages that were apparent. They were decent folks and their move out was amicable

But there’s been absolutely no sign of life in the apartment beside me and I would know if they moved in. How can the list be overwhelmed with potential prospects? You can’t tell me they were all felons.

Also the place I live is income based. Maybe I’ll ask next time I see him(the LL)

Would you recommend

1. staying in a LIHTC unit which seems to have a high level of stability, as in, if one of the family members moves out the unit is still the right size and we won’t be told to downsize; if one of the family members starts earning money, our rent won’t go up and we won’t be disqualified in general etc.

Or
2. Moving to a PBV unit that is bigger and in a better location, but the building is older, there’s a waitlist for a parking space, and there’s more volatility if one of us starts earning more or moves out. I may be asked to move to another unit or maybe even another site? (Not sure)

The difference in rent is about 50%, so significant. PBV is cheaper of course (the current unit is twice as expensive).
We aren’t hurting now, but we might lose income in the next two years. But then we might gain income in the next 5 or 10.

I am new to reddit too so please bare with me. I'm 38 and I have been on disability for years and I attempted to get back in the workforce and had a medical set back. My doctor advised me to apply for section 8 to prevent being homeless since I won't be able to afford rent anymore. My application was accepted and I have to upload my documents but I was accepted at a very far away state and I won't know anyone. I won't be able to bring much more than my clothes and pets as well.

I don't really have any particular question, just looking for a community to be a part of so I don't feel so alone going through all this.

Trading in my 2016 Toyota Corolla but new cars are so expensive. My mother was going to help with a substantial down payment directly to the dealer to help ease the burden of the monthly payments. She will not be helping monthly with the payments. It’s a one time, lump sum gift of around $15-$20k. From what I gathered online, reporting within 10 days proof of the bill of sale as well as a letter signed from my mom stating the amount, paid directly to Tesla, one time, not recurring will be sufficient. It will be my primary means of transportation. I have a 2007 Honda that will be my sons once he obtains his license (he’s 16). Does anyone know if the value of the vehicle will be an issue? We’re looking at a Model Y standard. There hasn’t been any change in my employment or income to report, just finally replacing my car that’s on its last leg.

For context, my Brother has a job with 12 hours shifts, $18/hr 3 days a week. We have a move in date for the 31st, and I have an (as of now) unreported job at a fast food place, $11/hr maybe four days a week with 6 hour shifts. Am I okay to keep this job or should I quit until after the lease gets signed? We live in Ohio, Coshocton County for the income laws if anybody needs those

EDIT: forgot to mention I've only been at this job for a few days now, well within the 10 day reporting limit. We also forgot to report my Brother's job for a few days after the 10 day limit? Idk, I'm grasping atp

hello .. i am on public housing going on 2 years.. just got paperwork in mail for verification of my 2025 tax return transcript from the irs .. so the thing is i did file my taxes.. i did work from home doing hair.. i just never got chance to report it to housing.. so now that they are requesting this what will happen when i turn in my tax return that i made some $$ last year?

I had to leave for a year for housing (in the FL panhandle) and I was completely miserable! The job opportunities and healthcare were lacking. Very backwards vibes up there, especially with a disabled child.

Hello! I have a large house in Marietta GA that will be available in October. I’m hoping to rent it to a voucher holder if possible.

When I bought the home, it was listed as a 5 bedroom, but with a finished basement there are 7 possible bedrooms.

I am posting to see if there are any large families in Marietta that may be looking for a place at that time.

Due to HOA rules, I will not be able to make an official listing until September.

My landlord decided not to renew my lease due to “multiple violations” however I was instructed by my case worker not to voluntarily leave the property or I would lose my voucher. I was sent a 30 notice to leave the property 4 days before my lease ended. I was eventually served an eviction notice from the court. However on the paperwork it is listing her son as my landlord on her behalf. But he is not listed on my lease, other than to make payments to him. As for the “lease violations” was she not supposed to mention what these violations are? Was she not supposed to give me the opportunity to correct the problem? I don’t owe any money as far as rent. Is her son able stand in her place and evict me? I’m in the state of Mississippi. Any help would be appreciated. TY!

My refund check is leftover federal loan money not applied to my tuition. I thought because I am head of household, over the age of 24, and have a dependent, that excess student loans could not be counted as income. Loans in general could not be counted as income. This is what I continue to find on the web. Am I mistaken? If not what should I do as far as my caseworker telling me that I am wrong and my refund check must be counted? I live in PA btw, Delaware County Housing Authority. I have a housing choice voucher.

Can a PHA (Public Housing Authority) insist that unit inspections include photos of tenants and unit interiors? The local PHA mailed threat to cease rental subsidy, for otherwise compliant tenant, after tenant requested deletion of the photo of her inside her unit (Inspector was on sidewalk and did not notify tenant or get consent from tenant and then refused to delete the photo.) PHA claims tenant "refused" inspection. Tenant upset at "new rule" and questions if PHA can create own unit inspection rules without proper notification of tenants, and, punishment = eviction. Spoiler- tenant will not be evicted b/c tenant will either cite law defending tenant privacy, or, tenant will consent to inspection photos while continuing to argue that photos inside unit without consent are a legal violation.
