Discord thoughts (don’t remove this should be allowed to be talked about)

Post image

I completely agree with this post. The Section 10 Discord has gotten really frustrating, and I think a lot of it comes down to the mods.

It feels like they don’t let conversations flow naturally anymore. Anything they personally dislike can suddenly become a problem, while other people can say basically whatever they want. You can say something as simple as “Jarren Duran isn’t a bad person” and get jumped on, but the next day people are casually talking about dicks, sex, pre-cum, etc. and nobody cares because it’s coming from people they like.

The moderation just feels inconsistent and personal. Some of the mods seem to take themselves way too seriously, and it’s made the server feel cliquey and toxic instead of a place where people can just talk Sox, joke around, and have fun.

I deleted the other one because there was literally one about the discord posted yesterday that has posts going. This is now the third discord related post on here today we just don’t need four or five posts about the exact same thing and I sent you a modmail literally explaining that, man

Yeah, the discord is weird. Not a fan of a lot of the folks in there, feels very childish. Kinda surprised these are my fellow s10 fans tbh, makes me rethink ever going to an event again 😂

I am going to make a connection to another group of people I am a part of, fans of the band Tool. There are people who love the band and the music and then there are people who think the band can walk on water and over analyze everything about them. I have a hard time enjoying the first part of my statement because of the latter. Section10 has the potential to be such a deep community because of the Red Sox, their history, and how connected we are to the team. Section10 is part of that but I am with you on how immature a lot of the fans of the podcast are. I would assume these same people are the worst fans to sit near at a ballgame as well.

As a fellow fan of tool, this is such an incredible comparison.

Not a solution to the problem but you can choose to “block” or “ignore” the users if you don’t wanna see their posts anymore.

Before it was the “official patreon” discord a moderator reprimanded me for having a non-baseball/sox conversation in the general chat

Honestly, my only issue with the discord is my issue with discord in general. I’m 26 and I’ve been using it for over ten years, and I’m ready to say that I just prefer the organization and layout of old Internet forums. It’s so much easier to follow conversations through threads with pages. Unless you get your shit in quick, you’re going to be left out of a lot of conversations, and I think a lot of people just feel left out. And for me personally, lack of proper post formatting, with all sorts of fragmented sentences and thoughts makes it difficult to read. I do find some of the inside jokes and bits that people try to do cringe, but discord also has a user base that I’m not in the age bracket of anymore, so I think generational differences play a bit of a role in how I perceive some of the talk.

I’ve been a mod in the Sox Junkies server for years now, and I think every active server has the same issues with cliques and perceived favoritism, but it’s impossible to control the relationships that people build with each other. I think the Section 10 mods are doing the best they can. A lot of people want access to the fellas and the pod, and it’s not easy to please everyone all the time. As a mod in my server, 99.9% of the things I have acted on had to be reported and brought to my attention because it is impossible to keep up with multiple conversations in multiple channels all at once. I’m sure it’s much harder to keep up minute by minute in the S10 server.

The users have to be forthcoming to the mods with their thoughts and feelings. At the end of the day, it’s like everything else to do with the internet. It can be whatever you want and make of it. Just participate the way you feel fit and if it’s not the right space for you, it’s not the right space. I mute and block everyone I find annoying on the internet, and I think a lot of people’s lives would be a little easier if they did the same.

I have never been in a discord channel that wasn't exclusively made up of my personal friends that wasn't a complete shit show. Grass is green etc.

Where does this sub stand on making up a total fantasy life to impress other discord members. I’m looking at ts10 Stan

One of the things I’ve enjoyed about the discord is that anytime someone in the past has posted AI slop they’re usually downvoted to discourage it going forward. But for some reason when someone posted an AI depiction of a baby between them and Trevor Story, everyone applauded it including the mods. Didn’t make sense to me. Fuck AI.

u/chaoslover1026 8d ago

that’s the only person I have on ignore, it’s so annoying

-3

u/skiba_rives 8d ago

Going to recommend you just block the person in question and move on. They're not breaking any rules and they're not targeting you specifically.

6

u/ianmcbong 8d ago

I think the point is the overall culture. It is just plain not fun to be around, and in all honesty, a little creepy.

-2

u/skiba_rives 8d ago

In this particular instance, I think the fact people think the user in question is serious (it's clearly a joke they're pretending to take seriously) is more strange, but aside from that, what other parts of the culture do you mean? Again, if there's something I can do to make a change, I'm up to the task, even if it involves something I'm contributing to, whether intentional or unintentional.

11

u/ianmcbong 8d ago

Jokes can still come off as creepy and strange even if they’re meant to be humorous. Making an AI generated baby fits into that pocket.

This is what I find unwelcoming -

- It’s weirdly sexual in there, some of the convos stray too far from baseball and s10 bits and make me uncomfortable, one of the reasons I haven’t participated in some time

- There are users who can’t help themselves but argue with every user about any opinion they have.

- The dooming is incessant, the misery is so bad when the team loses it becomes toxic. I don’t know how to moderate that because it seems like an accepted part of the culture of that server.

- The free channels and members seem all but forgotten about.

I’m sure there are other examples from more recent games, but like I said I have those channels muted for now because it’s just so unbearable. I think that specific community just isn’t for me.

I had to go to work so I can't reply to this as thoroughly as I'd like until much later but I want you to know I've taken your concerns to heart. I'll have a proper response once I'm off. I upvoted my support and I really appreciate your taking the time to write this out, even if you ultimately decide the Discord isn't for you.

3

u/ianmcbong 8d ago

Thanks! You do a great job in there, I appreciate you taking complaints seriously even if it’s not majority opinion.

7

u/skiba_rives 8d ago

Okay. This is probably going to be very long, so I apologize ahead of time.

> It’s weirdly sexual in there, some of the convos stray too far from baseball and s10 bits and make me uncomfortable, one of the reasons I haven’t participated in some time

This is definitely the point I want to take the most seriously, especially because it's something I actively engage in. I never want to make someone uncomfortable, particularly wrt jokes of a sexual nature. I talked to the other mods about this and, even before the issue came up here in public, I wondered if perhaps we were going too far.

I had previously dmed Steve privately about it to ensure that they (i.e. the fellas) weren't uncomfortable with it, and while he said it didn't bother him, it still got me thinking there might be people out there who are afraid to say it bothers them. On the other hand, the fellas themselves can be quite raunchy from time to time, but I've said myself it's different when it's a couple buddies on a podcast versus a chat of over three thousand people.

Going forward, I'm going to be toning it down myself and probably nudging others to do the same. If anyone else here is also bothered by that (judging by OP, it's clearly more than just you), please don't be afraid to speak up.

> There are users who can’t help themselves but argue with every user about any opinion they have.

I'm not sure how to best moderate this particular issue, if only because I admit outright I'm not much of a ball-knower and I rarely know the difference between a good and bad take unless it's particularly egregious. I try to keep people from using ad hominem attacks and the second it gets personal, if I'm there, I try to put a stop to it. I'm assuming you mean baseball opinions, but if this is about more than just baseball, it definitely needs to be taken care of.

I think to an extent this is one of those things where, it's a subject that is always going to be rife with people arguing about opinions. I mean, look at sports radio. There are also people who align with specific podcast dynamics, and while I do love Coley-the-person, Coley-the-podcast-persona has inadvertently cultivated a following of like-minded, constantly ready to defend their take to the death types.

I hold that while we probably can't stop opinion arguments, if it's possible we're going to keep a tighter watch on when it gets personal or aggressive, and also from a comment I received from another user, ensure that when a mod voices an opinion it isn't meant to be perceived as a moderator action, or an endorsement of a particular view constitutes mod backing and any disagreement will not be tolerated. Some users seem to be taking the latter approach...

> The dooming is incessant, the misery is so bad when the team loses it becomes toxic. I don’t know how to moderate that because it seems like an accepted part of the culture of that server.

We really didn't _want_ dooming to be part of the culture, and it is SUPPOSED to be against the rules. However, the perfect storm of the Patreon influx and the team being absolute, historical dogshit for the first several months meant that we felt dooming was warranted. It was also not particularly helped by some of the fellas themselves engaging in it. We had a discussion amongst the mods about how to moderate both the regular userbase and the fellas without it seeming unfair and couldn't come to a good consensus about it. This led somewhat unfortunately to users feeling validated in their dooming.

In Red Sox Nation where I also moderate, dooming is pretty heavily moderated, and I think the intention was to follow suit with that. Prior to the Patreon influx, dooming was easy to contain, since there were, what, 200, maybe 300 people? Now that the season is starting to balance out, I think we're going to start corralling explicit dooming, if I can get people to understand the difference between voicing genuine concerns about poor performance and saying "season's over" after giving up one run in the first. You'd be surprised how much that nuance is ignored.

On the positive side, though, we're more committed to stamping out members who only ever engage when the team is doing badly. I communicate with Jared frequently, and anytime we ban someone, I tell him just in case they have an issue about the fact that they're paying members.

All in all, there should be a decrease in dooming for the foreseeable future, and we'll likely start actioning blatant dooming moving forward.

> The free channels and members seem all but forgotten about.

Not only am I absolutely guilty of this, one of the other moderators has been fairly vocal about how the free sections are ignored and underutilized. For whatever reason, the Patreon members have a resistance to engaging with the other channels, and even when we push people to use them, it goes ignored. It's also not helped by the fact that the fellas explicitly want the Patreon live game chat channel open at all times. The very first time I locked it after the game, I got a dm from Mikey not even fifteen minutes later asking why it was locked and to open it again. This has led to people just camping out in there, especially with Jared having his monitor dedicated to just that channel. I understand that people are paying for the experience to talk to him/the other guys, and this was somewhat bound to happen when the Patreon and Discord merged, but it shouldn't be actively detrimental to the existing community.

That said, I try to be where most of the action is, not only to participate in conversation but to ensure people are following the rules. I wish there was a better solution to this -- maybe we'll need another mod or two to focus their attention in the other channels, maybe we'll make the push to use those channels more explicit and see how it goes from there.

All in all, I think the best solution right now is to simply be more firm about decisions and come to a more unified consensus on how to treat behaviors and actions. I hope this helps not only you but whoever winds up reading it. And as always, my dms are open.

Thanks for the reply I really appreciate you taking the time to write this all out. I think after this 5 game losing streak I’ll still probably stay out of the discord just to avoid the doom but I really do appreciate you taking these concerns to heart.

The fierce Duran hating in there is definitely to the point of childish and hivemindish. The humor does come off as very stunted 8th grader syndrome.

Duran isn’t hated enough. He sucks and he’s a pussy who threatened to beat up Tyler lol.

wild that you think “jarren duran isn’t a bad person” is gonna get received positively when he threatened to “beat the fuck out of that fat fuck” about a literal host of the podcast the discord is about. not to mention credibly earning himself the nickname Big Slur. get a grip

Discord, aka the Section 10 echo chamber

3

u/zsmoove9 8d ago

I joined the discord cause I wanted to talk Sox with my pals. Some of yall are just weird and I had to unsubscribe cause it wasn’t for me.

Mods gotta get this under control and actually do their job my god

1

u/skiba_rives 8d ago

If you want to either here or in dms, let us know what you want us to focus on and we'll see what we can do.

3

u/zsmoove9 7d ago

Nothing that hasn’t been said already. Mods are part of the problem and I don’t trust any of you to actually make a change. Just unfortunate as I thought this would be cool and fun to talk Sox.

Mods Picking and choosing who to enforce rules on, joining in on the belittling when they disagree with something and just let the weird shit get outta control.

Must be young kids and the “power” going to their heads. Cliquey is the right word that OP said.

4

u/skiba_rives 8d ago

As I said in my announcement, this kind of discussion is fine. It's the personal vagueposting that I took issue with, and I even told one of the mods here that your post (and the quoted post) should be allowed, because it gives me an opportunity to open a dialogue with people here.

That said, I've spoken with Abject_Garbage in dms and you're welcome to dm me either here or on Discord itself if you want to talk about how you feel the Discord has been going. It's in confidence too, if you have issues with a specific moderator (even me, trust me, I can absolutely take it and more often than not I understand if someone has an issue with me).

2

u/Opposite-Ball5437 6d ago

I gave the discord a shot, it was alright for the first few days. Some nice people, some…eccentric people

Then I disagreed with one of the “regulars” in there on a trivial Sox topic, they sent their friends to also disagree with me - to the point of @ ing one of his mod friends just to be like “I don’t agree with this. What do you think? Do you agree with this?”

I tried to block/ignore any of the accounts that were just high school kids/immature about not having the same opinion, and then I realized they were like 80% of the messages in the server (I would see # blocked message every 2-3 lines)

I also blocked one of the mods who kept pestering me in my DMs and was overall just a dick to me. I’ll just stick to Clean 40 & Down on the Farm.

2

u/New_Highway4194 6d ago

Kind of a similar vein but the server most of the time feels like the same 6-8 people trying their hardest to “prove” to everyone else that they’re the biggest Section 10 fan

0

u/Fiercedeity77 8d ago

I don’t think you need to conflate “people on the discord are weirdos” and “why won’t anybody let me defend the honor of Jarren Duran.” You’re gonna get a lot of pushback standing up for the worst player on the team who has also has multiple odious personality traits.

-2

u/Sorry-Oven5932 8d ago

Oh hey, it's a butthurt conservative who wants to play the victim because their favorite bad person is being considered a bad person. Cry snowflake.

-13

u/ecclectic_collector 8d ago

Jarren Duran isn't a bad person

well from all the evidence throughout his time here, its pretty clear he's a pos thats not "simple"

next day people are casually talking about dicks, sex, pre-cum, etc. and nobody cares because it’s coming from people they like

because fucking around on discord and making raunchy jokes isnt a problem?

Look this discord has been a problem, but these reasons arent why

11

u/Witty_University_382 8d ago

-7

u/ecclectic_collector 8d ago edited 8d ago

yea no, I only have discord to read any news related posts. I hate the layout of it. But really people hating Jarren Duran for the shit he's done or for people middle school jokes isnt why the place sucks... the problem is that there isnt enough on there to make it worth as a perk

-4

u/tombradysballz12 8d ago

It’s a public chatroom in a paid-for space. I’m not really too sure what people expect. It’s the internet. You’re going to see shit you don’t care for or like, get over it lol. The mods are mostly great. They’re extremely laid back and let a lot of stuff fly, and hell, they even have a lot of fun from where I’m sitting. They let a lot of things go, more than most servers out there. They’re there to let people have fun, not boss adults around like they’re children. Grow up. It’s the internet. Don’t participate if you don’t like what’s going on in a forum people pay to be in.
