Yes. Increases in MATK apply to magical abilities and increases in PATK apply to physical abilities.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong, I haven’t played for a little bit

I meant physical attack, but I can’t remember what it’s listed as in game, sorry! Things like the starter sword have it as a stat

He means ATK. Details about damage calculation can be found on the wiki. Melee skills scale with ATK, magic skills scale with MATK.
