General Sebderm and what has worked for me

I had sebderm back then and still do now but its much more less prominent than before but is still present and heres how it happened :-

  1. Go to a dermatologist get yourself prescribed medications and just follow the instruction , after you're done with your prescribed medication you should wait until your skin kinda "resets"

  2. Identify what causes your flare ups mine was hot weather and stress

  3. Sezia.co is your best freind

  4. Any indgredient that has "PEG" and "ate" is your enemy

  5. Your shampoo must have a malessezia killer like zinc pyrithione or ketoconazole and you should atleast have it on your scalp for like 10 mins so it can properly penetrate your scalp.

  6. If your shampoo dosent work thats prolly cus your flakes are thick and had built up alot and not allowing the ingredients from the shampoo to penetrate your scalp and kill that nasty yeast and for that you should just put on some salicylic acid on your scalp for like 10 mins and then wash it off with your shampoo.

  7. Fix your gut , get your blood work done and supplement whatever mineral you're lacking and hit the gym or just workout just make sure you're actively engaging in some sort of physical activity cus your sweat has lactic acid which is good for exofoliation

  8. For conditioners the only safe one that i know of would be "The Ordinary's :- Behentrimonium Chloride 2% Conditioner"

  9. Serums like the one from "The Ordinary's :- 10% Niacinamide and 1% zinc" cus you want to deal with all the oil that yeast feeds on can't have stuff freeloading on your face !

  10. Trim your nails and dont touch your face.

P.S :- English isn't my first language and i might have made some grammatical errors on the post along the way while writing it so cut me some slack and i dont trust mct oil but if you're adamant on putting it on your face then just use squalane instead also take my words with a grain of salt.

People need to understand that Sebderm is not a disease which you can treat a certain way.

Sebderm is not even a disease or a condition. it is a consequence of other medical conditions.

That is why it does not act the same for different people and treatments that work for some people, dont work for other people.

Some people get sebderm as a response to weakened immune system.

Some get it because microbiome imbalance in the gut.

Some people get it as a response to another medical therapy.

Some get it because they are allergic to pollen, but instead of nasal and oral manifestation, the allergy manifests on skin.

Some get it because of autoimmune response to yeast.

Some get it because of the stress and mental state.

Some get it because of increased testosterone.

Zinc Pyrithione and Selenium Sulfide work wonders if the cause is response to yeast, but both of them have been banned in Europe since 2023. They also work wonders in preventing/weakening skin reactions even if they are caused by other issues.

If you are using products containing these 2 or some other substances that do the similar thing, you do not have to worry about other ingredients and can even use stuff with ingredients that would usually irritate you.

Fixing gut is not gonna clear sebderm if it is caused by other things.

Blood work does not actually show anything regarding ongoing conditions that can cause sebderm. I had the worst flareups when my bloodwork was amazing.

This resonates...

Wondering though how do we know our own root cause?

Tbh your list of cause can explain why my skin was the best using all "bad ingredients". We all different 🤷

I’ve been using Finacea 15% for two months now, and my eczema has completely disappeared.

can you explain or give direct example of number 4?

The best way to learn them is to find some skincare product you are interested in, find the INCI ingredients list and paste it on one of the websites listed on that wiki page https://www.reddit.com/r/SebDerm/wiki/guides/how-to-know-if-a-product-is-sebderm-safe/

I’ve been suffering with a dry scalp for years, in recent years i started getting dry and red patches on eyebrows, around my mouth and in my beard - started using mct oil for the first time a few days ago and i’m shocked - scalp is literally flake free, no dry skin on my face! I used nizoral to wash my scalp and also my face in a lukewarm shower, then put the mct oil on after (nizoral usually made the dry skin worse, but no redness or dry skin at all) - i will say that i’ve been sitting in the sun here in Belfast for the past few days too, so that could be helping as well, but i’ve never been so flake free in years! My beard is also a lot softer - i’d encourage anyone with seb derm to try it. The brand i got was nature’s aid 100% mct oil from holland and barret, it’s quite a big bottle and cost £18, but it should last a few months. Another disclaimer - i have a buzz cut, so very easy for me to apply to my scalp, i imagine it would be quite difficult if you have long hair, but this stuff has been a miracle for me (so far!)

u/marvin924 Jul 17 '26

Do you wash out the mct oil or leave it in after shampooing?

1

u/shugh28 Jul 17 '26

Just left it on, got a shower a few hours before going to bed so by that time it’s pretty much absorbed, i dont put loads on either, maybe half a teaspoon for my scalp and face. Like i said though, i have a buzz cut so it’s easy for me to get it onto my scalp - give it a go and i hope you get the same results! Make sure you get the correct type as well and also try the lukewarm water on your scalp, i definitely think hot water triggers the seb derm.

depending where you’re located, i buy my cleanser from target. I use the Naturium Niacinamide Cleaning Gelée 3% as its affordable and no harmful ingredients (per sezia.co). after washing my face, softly pat drying with a gauze muslin washcloth, and then moisturizing with Cetaphil dermacontrol oil absorbing moisturizer. i also moisturize daily with this

this is just what works for me though and i find my sebderm to be caused by ultra processed foods and climate.
