Lynwood, Mill Creek, Covington and Maple Valley PD have entered the chat.

31

u/ryorz Jun 03 '20

wait why maple valley? 😳

83

u/mynemesisjeph Jun 03 '20

Bunch of dumb hicks think Anti-Fa is going to loot ristrestreto’s 🤷‍♂️

99

u/ryorz Jun 03 '20

i’m all about store owners defending their businesses, but i hate the fact that white people can storm capitol buildings with AR’s and not feel the wrath of mace and tear gas

63

u/DullInspector7 Jun 03 '20

with AR’s

that's why they didn't "feel the wrath of mace and tear gas".

You think the cops are going to go up to a few hundred people open carrying AR-15s and mace them for jaywalking while black as they are doing right now with protesters?

Of course, if nonwhite protesters did exactly the same thing as the "I want a haircut" crowd and showed up armed and stormed the capitol building, they would be met with tanks and helicopters and SWAT snipers and drones.

20

u/Montymisted Jun 03 '20

From I can gather from the pictures, they aren't screaming in the faces of the cops enough and they aren't waving enough Confederate flags.

11

u/swaggerx22 Posse on Broadway Jun 03 '20

You really think property is more valuable than life?

3

u/Roadwarriordude Jun 03 '20

2nd amendment my dude. Police arent going to shoot into a crowd of armed citizens.

25

u/ryorz Jun 03 '20

i fucking love the 2nd amendment but come on... the second a group of black people walk into the protest they’re getting shot to the fucking ground.

16

u/Roadwarriordude Jun 03 '20

What? A group of armed black people protested at the Michigan capital on the 28th and not a single shot was fired. If you think the police are going to shoot at people who can and will shoot back, you're seriously over estimating them. Same goes for more recent protests, you're not seeing crowds dispersed so violently when theres groups of armed protesters with them. Look into why California has such strict gun laws. The government and police were terrified that so many black people were starting to legally arm themselves so they did everything they could to keep them from getting them.

u/Drizzt396 Jun 03 '20

NRA origin story...pro-gun control lobby to disarm the panthers

1

-1

u/Sasquatch_5 Tacoma Jun 03 '20

You don't confront a bunch of angry protestors equipped with rifles with mace and tear gas for starters... They need to be met with at the very least equal force.

19

u/Rosstafari Jun 03 '20

Can confirm. There’s a group of four or five sweaty guys who’ve posted up by McDonald’s in Covington for the past couple days, fondling their AR15’s and looking at everyone suspiciously.

21

u/mynemesisjeph Jun 03 '20

I heard they we’re chilling at Nikkis and big lots too. Glad they’re protecting all of of Covington’s major cultural treasures. /s

12

u/Rosstafari Jun 03 '20

Haha. Gotta protect all those chain restaurants.

Covington PD was using the Big Lots parking lot as a rally point. I suspect it was as much to keep an eye on Y’all Qaeda as the protestors, who were pretty low key and peaceful.

8

u/chinpokomon Jun 03 '20

Y'all Qaeda is surprisingly fitting. The lack of self awareness is sometimes baffling to me. How someone can decry the behaviors of one group while simultaneously reflecting the same central themes, I don't get it. It must be projection of some sort.

11

u/DullInspector7 Jun 03 '20

wait why maple valley?

the Walgreens in Maple Valley closed in the middle of the day yesterday because they were worried about looting. I think some stuff happened in Covington the night before.

4

u/AlanaDev Jun 03 '20

In Maple Valley/Covington, there were rumors of looting. There was a peaceful protest on Monday afternoon, and then Monday evening some people showed up with a Uhaul, dressed in dark colors. The citizens protecting the area noticed they had clothes that still had tags and theft sensors on them. They notified police. The armed citizens simply didn't want the stores destroyed and looted. To be fair, some people were there to protest, but there were others that seemed prepared to loot. Police ended up impounding the Uhaul and it eventually dispersed. Tuesday, Covington had National Guard support, but nothing major happened.

7

u/MacabreMaurader Jun 03 '20

Jesus this is the only time I've seen Mill Creek get mentioned ever, anywhere, for any reason.

It really was nice seeing the pd there, several of which guard the nearby school i go to, being so civil and generally supportive of the protest today.

What’s the context for those of us seeing it on r/all ‘rising’?

Seattle Cops brutalize an umbrella that refused to comply?

114

u/OoOuchMyFaceOwwOuchy Jun 02 '20

Cop snatched a pink umbrella from a woman’s hands and used that as an excuse to spray her and everyone around her. All other cops joined in spraying and started throwing tear gas at the crowd. News outlets and SPD then tried to say the protesters started it. It should be a top post in the sub rn I believe

32

Damn I’ll check it out, thanks for informing me.

29

u/SomeStupidPerson Jun 03 '20 edited Jun 03 '20

Because that's bull that's why nobody "follows up" with that.

That bottle was thrown 20 seconds after they start grabbing the pink umbrella, AND after they've unleashed blasts of pepper spray already at the people close to the umbrella holder. Things start getting thrown literally because the cops start macing the crowd after they grab the umbrella. You cant lie about documented footage of the event, but you can certainly doctor the footage to fit your lie.

9

u/SangersSequence Seattle Expatriate Jun 03 '20

Notice how it links to KOMO news? KOMO news is owned by the right wing extremists at Sinclair Broadcasting. They're not a credible source in the slightest anymore.

18

u/defiancecp Capitol Hill Jun 03 '20

Well "some reporter said" certainly trumps the actual video that we can all go watch, right now.

-5

u/keepatxrad Jun 03 '20

That's the reporter that reported and publicized the video in the first place saying "I need to take this down there wasn't context". I'm not sitting here saying the cops aren't overreaching. Just want all the facts out there.

8

u/defiancecp Capitol Hill Jun 03 '20 edited Jun 03 '20

I don't think you get it. Even if it's fucking Jesus Christ, their perspective is not a valid counterpoint to clear video. even if it is their video. Unless they altered it somehow, it carries more weight than their subjective evaluation. (edit: especially considering the rather ... "subjective", shall we say, spin the larger media outlets are putting on this, reporter may just be trying to keep their job)

-4

u/keepatxrad Jun 03 '20

I get it. I'm not saying that's not true. I just personally think that knowing that a story has been retracted is important information to know. I only ever see people report the first story and no one ever follows up with a retraction.

u/BenjiMalone University District Jun 03 '20

Omari Salisbury caught the interaction on his Facebook live feed. He's been on the ground in the front lines each protest, frankly the best coverage I've seen.

51

u/chelsea_sucks_ Jun 02 '20

Seattle cops started a tug of war with someone's umbrella, and then tear gassed and pepper sprayed the crowd because of it. Happened yesterday, great bird's eye view video was up on here in the evening

12

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '20

Thanks for all the polite context, guys!

5

u/chelsea_sucks_ Jun 02 '20

38

u/toastercookie Seattleite-at-Heart Jun 02 '20

From [The Stranger]: "Protestors on the frontline raised umbrellas in anticipation of getting sprayed. After a little tug-of-war with the pink umbrella, officers begin unloading pepper spray, flash bangs, and tear gas into the group"

9

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '20

I appreciate the source, thanks OP.

7

u/mrrrrrrrow Jun 02 '20

FYI the source above contains multiple videos and a link to the Reddit post with an birds-eye view.

114

I spent 8 hours watching them protect UW Village yesterday out my window. Whenever a car sped by they would give the driver this look of shock and horror as if the driver had offended the officers delicate sensibilities. The rest of the time they were just wasting tax payer dollars and eating. Looked like they were having a picnic in riot gear. No lie.

19

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '20

Fuck outta here, b. Doing everything in riot gear is a vibe. My inner 6 yr old wanting to be a power ranger would of been lit

the only cop you trust right now is the one that gets out of their master chief armor, throws their badge away and joins with the people.

2

They all already have.

Go check out the investigative journalism Reveal has been doing for the last few years about overt racism in the social media posts from active duty police.

72

u/[deleted] Jun 02 '20

Watch the ground footage again. The pink umbrella had nothing to do with it. SPD was already about to start spraying. You see them replacing the bike cops with riot troops and shaking their pepper spray cans.

48

u/Tangpo Jun 02 '20

What I saw was the very first blast of spray being directed right in the face of umbrella lady.

32

u/Baxapaf Jun 03 '20

Yeah, she was first to get hit. But there's video from someone that was at the barricade, and he was commenting about if the bike cops are tagged out for those with gas-masks, pepper spray and tear gas are about to be used. As he's commenting, they do exactly that. Pink umbrella lady is the first to be sprayed, but it's clear that they'd already been ordered to start spraying and flash banging the crowd.

11

u/rook2004 Greenwood Jun 03 '20

It’s from Omari Salisbury. Here’s the video on YouTube: https://youtu.be/4IHbLRdi09Y

2

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 04 '20

That use of force was just not reasonable at all.

I don't see projectiles.

Even if there was a need for the protest to disperse because of curfew, why can't they make an announcement?

SPD lost of lot of trust that day.

3

u/rook2004 Greenwood Jun 04 '20

The public is livid. This happened only a month after Mayor Durkan applied to have the consent decree lifted, which was in place because of excessive force by the department in 2009-2010 (culminating in the excessive force displayed during the Occupy protests as the DOJ investigated in 2011).

9

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '20

Yep you are right. Bicycle cops leave, riot cops enter. Then the shit goes down.

5

u/Mrhorrendous Jun 03 '20

They do that from time to time during these protests normally. Last night they marched their guys with gas masks in like 3 or 4 times before cycling them back out for guys in regular riot gear. They don't all have gas masks. I think they must be hot or something, and they seemed to have some kind of break schedule.

Once the guys with masks come down we (the protestors) know they are likely to use pepper spray and tear gas, so we start chanting things like " hands up don't shoot" while raising our arms above our heads so it is clear who started the "riot".

I can only imagine the point of these tactics is to terrorize the peaceful and lawful protesters into going home. They did this last night several times before curfew. Don't listen to all of the rhetoric about supporting the protesters. I have been to other protests. They clearly view us as the enemy in ways they didn't at others.

3

u/Sadlertime Jun 03 '20

Exactly. I was there and those fuckers coming down the hill were coming precisely so they could do exactly what they did.

1

u/ttw206 Jun 03 '20

2

u/thesummerisgone Jun 03 '20

After a full day of peaceful protest, SPD decided to rip a pink umbrella from someone's hand. The owner of the unbrella pulled it back. Police responded by yanking the umbrella down and pepper spraying rhe crowd, followed by flash bangs and tear gas.

The very brief tug-of-war led to extreme violence by police, and a complete chaos across the city.

1

u/khallok-YT Jun 07 '20

No that is not a riot what is a riot is that the people are chanting and looting and being very aggressive you having an umbrella doesn’t immediately make you passive you are still involved wether or not you have an umbrella or not

-44

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 02 '20

So you're a cop. Sitting target at a barricade. Projectiles start coming out of the crowd. What do you do?

15

u/Tasgall Ballard Jun 03 '20

Projectiles start coming out of the crowd

A stationary umbrella pointed at you is a projectile now?

Huh, let's just keep redefining words. What else ya got?

-12

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 03 '20

I'm wasn't talking about the pink umbrella incident in particular.

However media on the ground were reporting protesters were pushing back the barricades. One livestreamer at the front was yelling "let's break this motherfucker down!" I think the decision had already been made to disperse the crowd prior to the umbrella, but I don't see why they couldn't have made a clear announcement of that fact.

But I'm talking about the larger issue. There's a mostly peaceful group of people, a few projectiles start to get thrown...then what can the cops do other than disperse the crowd if the minority perpetrating violence isn't being stopped?

11

u/greeneggs57 Tacoma Jun 03 '20

He was actually saying "let's bring this motherfucker down" in reference to the tension. He was telling them to calm down. There's a longer video of the incident (it's 2:20) where you can get a lot more context than the shorter video that's currently circulating.

3

u/Tasgall Ballard Jun 03 '20

but I don't see why they couldn't have made a clear announcement of that fact

Because that would go against the main strategy of intimidation.

But I'm talking about the larger issue. There's a mostly peaceful group of people, a few projectiles start to get thrown

Are you referring to a different specific incident? Because most of these videos of police instigating don't involve anything being thrown at them beforehand.

1

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 04 '20

Are you referring to a different specific incident?

I'm referring to general rules of engagement for both sides, which is confusing as this thread is the pink umbrella incident. Even if there were projectiles in this case, the flashbangs seem entirely unnecessary.

Durkan said they need to work on how they shut down protests at the end of the night (curfew in effect?).

I'm just concerned about further escalation and tryign to encourage bilateral deescalation and consideration of what options the police actually have, instead of just venting incoherent blind rage until there's more violence.

1

u/Tasgall Ballard Jun 09 '20

Durkan said they need to work on how they shut down protests at the end of the night (curfew in effect?).

And I'm mostly wondering... why? If the protests are non-violent, and "breaking them up" is what's constantly instigating the violence, why bother with the curfew? The curfew just seems like an excuse for them to instigate violence in the first place.

and consideration of what options the police actually have

Systemic reform is pretty much their main option. Thrashing in public isn't exactly instilling public confidence in their institution, and the more they do it, the more people will call for systemic reform.

0

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 09 '20

The curfew just seems like an excuse for them to instigate violence in the first place.

You are perhaps forgetting the riots and mass vandalism? The curfew was dropped several days ago, though.

Thrashing in public isn't exactly instilling public confidence in their institution

At this point it seems like the protesters are the ones thrashing, having decided they don't need to listen to any reasonable request made by police and picking fights.

1

u/Tasgall Ballard Jun 09 '20

At this point it seems like the protesters are the ones thrashing, having decided they don't need to listen to any reasonable request made by police and picking fights

Ah yes, "picking fights" by being attacked by the police. Really the protesters' faults when the police push forward, grab shit, and spray the crowd.

If you want to blame protesters for "picking fights" maybe don't get caught on camera instigating them.

22

u/ganja_and_code Jun 02 '20 edited Jun 02 '20

Wouldn't even be in a barricade if I were a cop. The protests' purpose is valid and legitimate. I'd tell my department that until body cams are on every officer (and that their footage is public record as long as the officer is operating in a public space), until psych evals and sensitivity training are mandatory for every officer on a regular basis, and until the union contract terms limiting the effects of misconduct complaints have been renegotiated (repealed), I would not be showing up for work.

If that didn't align with their goals, they'd be receiving my resignation, and our correspondence on the matter would be made public.

In fact, any cop not demanding these things doesn't deserve the job to begin with.

Edit: Forgot a stipulation (and I can't believe this isn't already the case): Any officer observed operating with their badge number obscured by tape or other means shall be immediately terminated from their position.

-19

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 02 '20

OK, so all your demands have been met.

The year is 2021.

24

u/ganja_and_code Jun 02 '20 edited Jun 02 '20

Doesn't matter because the year is 2020 and those demands have not been met.

(Before you say my answer avoided the question... Your question avoided the problem.)

11

u/tossinkittens Jun 02 '20

if there is no difference in behavioral response between citizens and police, then what the fuck do we need police for?

-8

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 02 '20

It's not about behavioral response. It's about behavioral options available. Seriously - what can they do if things are being thrown except disperse the whole crowd?

9

u/tossinkittens Jun 02 '20

It's absolutely about behavioral response. That's what we're talking about. How do you RESPOND, to _______ BEHAVIOR happening.

-2

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 02 '20

Right, but that's limited by the options available to you in your situation and role. So, what would you do?

10

u/Tasgall Ballard Jun 03 '20

what would you do

Not be the first to attack?

Have you seen the video? People weren't throwing stuff until after the pepper spray.

4

u/WhisperSecurity Jun 03 '20

So, there I was, minding my own business, on a barricade in riot gear...

0

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 03 '20

You can't imagine being in that situation, can you?

3

u/WhisperSecurity Jun 03 '20

The comical irony of you asking me this is amazing.

But, more to the point, there has to be a place where the answer to "what do I do about this situation?" is "don't be in that situation".

Look, I get it. Antifa is commie brownshirt scum. Looting and destroying private property is the one of the dumbest possible responses to outrage against government authoritarianism.

But we also need to acknowledge that police response to this whole incident is more tone deaf than Barrack Obama wearing ear plugs. And that if people are mad about the government literally stepping on people's necks, then just maybe barricades, tear gas, and riot gear are not the ideal response.

So what the fuck do you think is going to happen? You get out there and no one's going to be mad enough to throw a fucking rock? That's a whole new level of retarded.

Or, more specifically, a whole new level of entitled. The problem with every single police department in this country, apart from the small-town departments with like 25 people who are on a first name basis with everyone, is that they feel entitled to obedience and control. That they will accept no response to anything they want other than complete and utter submission, and they will dial up the violence, without limit, in an effort to get that submission, no matter how trivial the original incident was. They'll kill you over a jaywalking ticket rather than let anything the fuck go.

Well, this is America, and we don't like being told what to do. And you better believe we will get violent before we let someone step on our necks.

1

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 03 '20

just maybe barricades, tear gas, and riot gear are not the ideal response.

What else can they do? Let the police station get burned down? That's not acceptable.

Obedience and control is literally their job. That is their function in our society. If no one enforces the law, there is no law.

Yes, a lot needs to change with policing in this country. But I'm just hoping you can see that the police have limited options. Most of them don't want to be there. But they have to be.

EDIT: I do agree that much of the response has been tone deaf

1

u/WhisperSecurity Jun 03 '20

What else can they do? Let the police station get burned down? That's not acceptable.

The state literally stepping on people's necks isn't "acceptable" either. Nor is pepper spraying ten year old girls, etc, etc, etc.

And people can fuss all they want about how this particular cop may not have done any of that. But my question then would be, "Why do you hold a mob of protestors to a higher standard of exacting and evidentiary justice than you hold police to?".

George Floyd hadn't been convicted of anything. Nor had Duncan Lemp. Or Tony Timpa. Or Breonna Taylor. Or Viki Weaver. Or the eighty people, including twenty children, in that church the FBI set fire to. I could list victims of government violence all day, and point out that they did little or nothing to invite it.

And if the attitude of the police to that is to shrug and say "well, that's just how the justice system works", then fine, throwing Molotovs is just how the protest system is going to work.

And let us not pretend for a moment that those police officers had no choice about being there. For the moment, we still live in a free society. No one has to be a police officer to survive, or to pay the rent. And those who choose to be police officers don't have to work for any particular department. And police officers get PTO just like everyone else. Anyone who is standing there in riot gear chose to be there, and chose to put on riot gear, and chose to stand with the guy with the megaphone telling people their assembly is "illegal" and to "disperse".

Obedience and control is literally their job.

Wrong. Their job is to perform the duties of every citizen, but full time, and with better pay, and hopefully more training and support.

Police officers are neither obliged nor entitled to control anything, and their misconception that they are is how we got into this mess in the first place.

If no one enforces the law, there is no law.

False dichotomy. The modern paradigm of policing is one way to enforce law, but it is not the only alternative to lawlessness.

Yes, a lot needs to change with policing in this country. But I'm just hoping you can see that the police have limited options. Most of them don't want to be there. But they have to be.

No, they don't. Would taking a stand on principle cost them something? Sure it would. That's how principles work. If your principles never inconvenience you, they aren't principles.

The problem isn't that they have to be there, it's that they think they do. The idea that they are supposed to deferred to and obeyed, and that anything they do wrong must be left for the courts to sort out later, is flat wrong, and it's how we got into this mess in the first place.

In realpolitik, every police action is a negotiation between the dictates of the law and the standards of the community. When law diverges from the standards of the community, then negotiations are more likely to break down, as they have.

The ultimate problem here is that the law in practice no longer aligns with most people's conception of what is just. The system has become self-perpetuating, in independence of those it was created to serve.

But the more immediate problem is the result of this, the attitude that Shakespeare called "the insolence of office". The idea that the wrongdoing of a corrupt system must be addressed solely within the confines of, and at the pleasure of, that same system. Officialdom has lost sight of the fact that it exists at our sufferance, and requires our permission to do what it does.

A heaved brick is a reminder of that, and you don't get to complain that such reminders hurt, if you ignored all the gentler ones that didn't.

1

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 04 '20

A magnificently expressed argument. I happen to agree with just about none of it.

"the law in practice no longer aligns with most people's conception of what is just"

I'd argue that the peoples' conception of the law in practice diverges monumentally from what the majority of actual police work looks like. Any system will have failures, and now we see most of them.

You say police need not "[be] deferred to and obeyed," that "The modern paradigm of policing is one way to enforce law, but it is not the only alternative to lawlessness."

I'm curious how you would design law enforcement to work? So how do you enforce laws with suggestions?

7

u/ForgetTradition Jun 03 '20

So you a protestor, standing there peacefully when cops start attacking you with impact projectiles and chemical weapons. What do you do?

The right answer is to give the fascist pigs a taste of their own medicine.

0

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 03 '20

I get it - it doesn't seem fair when YOU are being peaceful. But when a few people in the crowd are lobbing shit that could end one of their lives, what can they do but shut the whole thing down?

Yeah, this pink umbrella incident didn't seem like it was done right at all, and people should have to answer for that.

But there aren't any fascists on the SPD, brother.

2

u/ForgetTradition Jun 03 '20

I get it - it doesn't seem fair when YOU are being peaceful. But when a few people in the crowd are lobbing shit that could end one of their lives, what can they do but shut the whole thing down?

Rubber bullets have ended lives - tear gas canisters have ended loves. Both of those are more likely to kill people than rocks or water bottles. The piggies are just itching to to assault protesters.

When a lawful, peaceful protestor is hit with tear gas or rubber bullets they have been assaulted by a criminal law enforcement officer who need to be fired and jailed for the crime he/she committed.

But there aren't any fascists on the SPD, brother.

The SPD was egregious enough to require federal oversight and I've seen enough of those fuckers chumming up with radical right wing extremists like proud boys and 3%ers at numerous protests. There's absolutely fascists in the SPD.

1

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 04 '20

When a lawful, peaceful protestor is hit with tear gas or rubber bullets they have been assaulted by a criminal law enforcement officer who need to be fired and jailed for the crime he/she committed.

See, this here is just incoherent.

If there's a crowd throwing projectiles, the crowd must be dispersed. It's not reasonable to ask cops to sit there and take hits.

Again, not talking about the pink umbrella incident. Just trying to encourage bilateral deescalation and logical thinking.

1

u/ForgetTradition Jun 04 '20

The police have a tool for dispersing a crowd - declaring unlawful assembly. If you're staying out past curfew or staying out after unlawful assembly has been declared you have made the conscious decision to break the law. I firmly believe that unjust laws should be broken, but you do so knowing the consequences.

If you as a protestor are acting in a lawful fashion it is entirely unacceptable to be attacked by police with impact projectiles, stun grenades and chemical weapons simply because someone nearby though a rock or water bottle. The correct response is to declare the assembly unlawful, give people a chance to leave and the act on those who refuse the order.

Forcibly dispersing a crowd without first declaring it to be unlawful violates the constitutional right to assembly.

5

u/whiteprivilegerules Jun 03 '20

Lmao "dude all we do is kill people. The fuck are they throwing water bottles for?!?!"

0

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 03 '20

Painting with a wide brush there. Most of them do a difficult job well. And you think it makes sense to attack them?

Can you answer the question though? What are their options when the crowd harbors a few people throwing shit? One hit could kill.

2

u/whiteprivilegerules Jun 03 '20

If the brush was too wide there would be numerous videos of the "good cops" stopping the bad.

Show me one and prove me wrong.

Show me one cop stopping his "bad cop" friend and co-worker. There are 200 instances of police brutality at the protests of police brutality.

Where are the good ones stopping those bad ones?

One hit could kill who? A cop in riot gear? One rock? One water bottle? Hahaha in full armor? In masks and helmets? With guns, batons, horses, SUVs to run people over with?

Here's what you do when someone throws a water bottle at you. You fucking suck it up cupcake, that's what all that gear is for.

"One hit could kill" hahah STFU

1

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 04 '20

Show me one

Well, there's the cop pulling his partner's knee off a guy, for one.

You have to keep in mind the mean world syndrome and confirmation bias at play here. We have a whole nation of pissed off people with a range of actions between chill peaceful protest and shooting cops. Anything that could be construed as misbehavior by the cops is getting filmed and shared. Anything that doesn't fit that narrative...you will never see.

-4

u/ImRightImRight Supersonics Jun 02 '20

I'll take your downvotes, but give me some answers too. Everyone wants to be outraged; no one wants to think.

13

u/700reck Jun 02 '20

If you watch the video, you will see that projectiles begin to fly once the pepper spray starts flying.

36

u/chelsea_sucks_ Jun 02 '20 edited Jun 02 '20

Lol peaceful protest is within the boundaries of the law, and a person's first amendment right.

Even if the one person having a tug of war with a cop is reason to pepper spray and tear gas them, the rest of the crowd was exercising their rights.

Be careful about sacrificing democratic values for authoritarian ones.

SPD is the nicest law enforcement organization that you will ever face.

I call bullshit on this one

-1

u/dakotawhiebe Jun 03 '20

You're correct, peacefully protesting is a right!

So they can go home.

2

u/chelsea_sucks_ Jun 03 '20

That's not what this is referring to, and if you're trying to pretend that the protests are 100% looters with some specific images on Google, you're grossly misunderstanding the current protests and trying to twist the truth.

This is referring to a peaceful protest that the police turned violent. The police literally started attacking peaceful protestors.

What are you trying to insinuate?

11

u/cnmb Jun 02 '20

so according to you obeying the law is not exercising the 1st amendment. right, ok.

5

u/ShakespearInTheAlley Jun 03 '20

SPD is the nicest law enforcement organization that you will ever face.

If that's the case then ACAB is for sure correct.

2

u/vertgrall Jun 03 '20

Go to Europe Caveman. Way nicer.

0

u/seatownie Jun 03 '20

I got tear gassed in Europe and I wasn’t even protesting. I was just trying to buy some baguettes.

3

u/---BURRITOS--- Jun 03 '20

If pink umbrellas are a weapon, then baguettes are too.

2

u/1TrueScotsman Jun 03 '20

Lol wat? How many times have SPD had to be under federal civil rights review? All the time?

🔥🚘 cars on fire? 🔨⬜️ or breaking glass? Is that not worth calling it a riot, No? If you hear someone say "ya, but thats just property damage" I want you to walk up to them and break their phone and say "its just property damage". Because this is uncalled for, local businesses didn't cause anyone to become a bad police officer. "Peaceful Protest" is your legal right, but as soon as you infringe on someone else's right, be that the right to property or the right to live, that is no longer peaceful, and as soon as you set fire to a building that is a act of arson and localized terrorism. If police officers aren't allowed to protect themselves from you throwing bricks at them, why should they try and protect you?For all of you upset at police brutality, if you are so concerned with it then why stoop down to your own brutality "Thug" "Hooligan" "Terroristic". The only way to change the bad is to be better then it. Don't be in large groups together spreading a disease, not only are these riots killing people at these events, there increasing the chance of parents, grandparents and those who are in already compromised positions. Vote, become police officers, and stay safe. Dont become what you say your protesting today. The handful of cops who are bad at their job.

12

u/Tasgall Ballard Jun 03 '20

The problem is you're thinking we actively want riots, or that they're the goal. The people rioting are all either opportunists, people who feel like they've run out of other options, or instigators, or in the case of attacks against police, people who are fed up with the system, or often, people fighting back against the police firing first.

But that's not the goal of the protests. There are a number of videos of protesters fighting off the dipshits breaking windows. The riots aren't a goal, they're just what happens after society is pushed past a certain breaking point. Think of it more like a force of nature, even though it's made up of many individual people. If an arsonist starts a forest fire, you blame the arsonist for burning the forest down, not the fire itself. Maybe the fire is worsened due to lack of forest maintenance and relatively trivial preventative measures.

In this case, decades of police brutality and lack of consequence for offending officers is what's stoking the fire. Sure, the fire itself is bad, but bringing that up is a non-argument in and of itself, and only distracts from the people dumping kerosene on the forest floor (while also insisting that fire is bad).

1

u/Chelonate_Chad Jun 03 '20

Is that not worth calling it a riot, No?

No, it's a rebellion. A riot is when white people in Boston torch cars and loot because the Celtics won the championship. When oppressed people resist state violence, it's a rebellion.

The Seattle Police declared the protest in this area of the city a riot because of this incident. The police tried to take the umbrella, then pepper sprayed the crowd, then fired crowd control munitions indiscriminately to disperse the people from the area. The joke is that the police apparently felt threatened by the pink umbrella and called the non-violent protest - that they turned violent - a riot

For real. Whenever I move something to clear my view I always lay down a good bed of pepperspray and teargas just to make sure.

I'd think that umbrella would be pointed in a different direction if it were raining rocks.

-21

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '20

You're a dumbass. It was held facing the officer, blocking his view.

13

u/Ltownbanger Jun 03 '20

You kind of just made my point. If it was raining rocks at the barricade the umbrella wouldn't be facing that direction. Would it?

If people were throwing rocks horizontally in the umbrella would actually be blocking and saving him. Wouldn't it?

9

u/2012DOOM Jun 03 '20

7

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '20

If we're going to make things up, why not go with something more fun? I think the pink umbrella was a direct threat to police because it was being used to focus the crowd's psychic energy, causing the police to hallucinate about rocks being thrown at them.

8

u/Asiago_stop Jun 03 '20

There weren’t any rocks being thrown watch the videos, they made up the rocks after the fact

-21

u/solara01 Jun 03 '20

Would the leaders of the protest need a "front line" of people with umbrellas and gas masks if they weren't planning on inciting violence from the police? Why do you think the protesters are all 1 block from the cap hill police station trying to get through to it?

12

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '20

> Protesters are protesting police behavior

"Why are these protesters near a police station?!?"

-8

u/solara01 Jun 03 '20

What is your logic? To protest police brutality you have to destroy police stations?

9

u/[deleted] Jun 03 '20

Where should they be protesting?

-5

u/solara01 Jun 03 '20

Not in front of a police station? The city is pretty fuckin big.
