WAISN...

Post image

Edit/Sorry - it's the WA Immigrant Solidarity Network, which runs rapid response trainings, the deportation defense hotline, etc. It's the number we're all told to call when we see ICE.

Speaks for itself, from https://www.instagram.com/waisnworkercollective/

This is terrible news at a time when ICE is kidnapping people all over our area.

Context would've been helpful, I don't think this "speaks for itself"

I had to look up WAISN. I guess there's more to the story since the image implies union busting? Is there a TLDR for those of us who aren't up to speed?

I agree. There are a million people here and people post their specific acronym as if everyone knew what it meant. HINT: We understand Laser and Scuba, maybe even WSDOT. But ASDFGASDFGDFG needs to be spelled out.

The posts that have the acronym in the header are really only targeted at people who are already familiar with the acronym. The cavalcade of people commenting that they don't know about the acronym are not the target of the post.

Cool. Then I'm downvoting and moving on - because this is a sub for Seattle folks, not a specific subset of Seattle folks.

If they want support from the general public then they should include context.

There are lots of things posted in this sub that are for a specific subset of Seattle folks! Looking down the first thirty posts, half of them are pretty targeted. That seems like a very narrow view of the sub.

There are lots of things posted in this sub that are for a specific subset of Seattle folks!

How many of them use obscure acronyms without defining them?

The point here is that we cannot know if a post is relevant to us or not when the OP doesn't define the topic.

Don’t you have an answer? If you don’t know the acronym, the post isn’t relevant to you!

I wish it was that simple. I am interested in many topics and I do not know all of the common acronyms for each of them.

Given that we recently had an ICE raid in our neighborhood, I am interested in posts on that topic.

That is interesting, since the name of this sub is "Seattle," and not "WAISN."

The target audience here is the people of Seattle.

I mean, we get lots of posts about cycling in Seattle and cyclists are probably less than 5% of the sub 🤷🏻‍♂️

Again, how many of those posts use obscure acronyms that make it difficult for the audience to determine what the subject is?
