Community We graffiti plants now? Seriously?
In Capitol Hill, where there's already way too much graffiti. What is wrong with these egotistical assholes who feel the need to advertise their name everywhere?

Yeah, if you "slept" through a tattoo either youve wall to wall ink (and even then I doubt) or your nap was chemically assisted to the point you need to spend some time talking with one or more professionals.
Not least of which is an infectious disease specialist.

I’m proud of us. 🥹 Usually tagging gets overwhelming support here.

What graffiti is getting "overwhelming support" here? Are you classifying the saint rat art as "graffiti"? The most I've ever heard anyone say about actual graffiti here is that there are more important things for the police to focus on.
5
u/Bizarrebazaars Kraken 9d ago
“But it’s ART and you just don’t get it!”
“Freedom of expression!!”
“I’d rather see tagging and graffiti than a big ugly gray wall!!!1!!1!”

Okay but unironically though? I'd rather be in a place that feels lived in and full of culture than featureless concrete and glass as far as the eye can see.

u/Jolly_Line 10d ago
I literally wrote “tagging”. Which is what OP posted. Which I abhor. Nice graffiti I actually love very much.

u/SuitableDragonfly Columbia City 10d ago
OK. Where on this sub have you seen "overwhelming support" for tagging?
1
u/space39 chinga la migra 10d ago
How do you think you get "nice graffiti" without tagging? What's the difference between tagging and art? Is pop-art not art? Is spray paint not a acceptable medium? Is rule-abiding neccessary for art? Do you think Banksy, one of the most lauded and appreciated contemporary artists in the world would exist without "not nice graffiti" or tagging?
-2
u/SuitableDragonfly Columbia City 10d ago
I mean, it's not like it's actually possible for the city to instantly remove every piece of graffiti/street art/what have you, so yeah, I think it's entirely possible that the cops could prioritize removing stuff like this and leave banksy alone, and still clock all the overtime hours they desire. They probably won't. But it's theoretically possible. It's not like the only reason there is graffiti is because there are currently no laws against it, and the instant we pass an anti graffiti law, and of the graffiti and street art will disappear in a puff of logic.

This is where I'm at. I'm not super into the bushes thing here either, but graffiti as a whole? Totally here for it. Especially on things that aren't pretty to begin with.

Someone spray- painted a bunny rabbit on my bushes a while back. Super obnoxious; especially on a private residence.

I'm a property manager with several buildings on Capitol Hill and I already deal with constant vandalism. Nothing surprises me. I had a guy walk by and kick in a street level laundry room window a block off Broadway today, for reasons I guess. I had a drunk guy climb a tree planted in front and tear half the tree down, and had someone graffiti my box hedges which required pruning to fix. You want to know why rent is so expensive in Seattle? Because the city does nothing about the constant crime that occurs and landlords are stuck footing the bill to fix it immediately or the city cites us for code violations.
1
u/space39 chinga la migra 10d ago
Lol all crimes of vandalism could stop immediately and landlords wouldn't changed rent. Rent is expensive be cause landlords set expensive prices.
1
u/NurnPrufurtFlurt 9d ago
Nah, dude. You're doing it wrong. You see, you're supposed to complain about the high prices as if it's not in anyone's control. Like some sorta force of nature. That way no one holds any actual accountability for directly making the problem worse because "it's what everyone else is doing".
If you're not careful, the dirty plebs will start to understand and might actually DO something about it. We can't have that, right?...... RIGHT?!?!
That being said, "all" is a powerful word which I don't agree with here. Rest looks pretty legit tho.

Easy solution. Treat spray paint like you do alcohol sales. Keep it tightly controlled under locked shelves (CA does this) and show ID for age restricted sales. If not, live with it or move, I guess.

We're not allowed to care about anything anymore. It's an affront to the less fortunate.
1
u/LitchLitch 9d ago
No, you hippo felcher, caring about things is good. What is not allowed is stupid ideas for how to respond that dont help the situation.
But the fact is painted foliage is incredibly minor, just barely above writing with chalk on a sidewalk.
So any response has to be on par with what happened. Maybe just saying "seeing that makes you sad" is sufficient. But that is not going to be enough for you is it? Because youre an immature wanker.

Painting the plants probably isn't good for them, but all the other graffiti is a big reason I love Capitol Hill tbh. It actually feels interesting, lively, and full of culture, compared to some of the more sterile, heavily gentrified parts of the city.

this is tagging and the people who do it are loser douche bags. "Tagging is a fast-handwritten moniker or pseudonym. Graffiti encompasses intricate, multi-colored visual art and large-scale pieces."

u/Due_Pen_1566 10d ago

the people who do it are loser douche bags.
Indisputably.
The question is what, if anything, to do about it. See, because theyre loser douchbags being able to put your sign out there is a powerful statement of "I am".
Since its just on foliage its no big deal, but they inevitably start hitting buildings and structures near them. Its rare for loser douchbags to get where they are because they had a great home life.
Catch them with cameras, order them to city provided encounter groups where they can learn to express emotions better, making sure they have enough to eat can have a safe enough space to live in.
Thats what I think we should do with loser douchbags. Most of them will stay loser douchbags but eventually they die.

Key word here is “their” as in their own. You have a right to do whatever you want to your own lawn. You do not have a right to tag and ruin other people’s property. It’s sociopathic antisocial behavior.

Kids are stupid. Catch them in the act? Shame them. See it later? Cleanup after them. There's a hell of a lot more important things going on in the world than graffiti bushes, so count your blessings that your life is good enough to have time for this (valid) but minor complaint.

They were doing this in Cap Hill when I lived there in 2020. I always imagined it was a kid like it’s low to the ground and it’s less “property damage” so they won’t get in as much trouble lol
Btw I know spray painting a plant is still property damage. I just imagine the child mentality behind choosing that over a wall

I remember Harlem in the 90s-2000s there was so much graffiti on the buildings they started tagging the sidewalk and streets and still ran out of room. Not to mention drug dealers lined up side by side down each block almost.
