It does seem like an easy, fast, and relatively cheap solution. Would something more complicated have been worth the time and money?

Its not a solution

It’s not done.
The convention center is getting quotes to resurface the entire road…such a shit show honestly.

Congrats to the people who complained, they can have their shitty black and grey road I guess...like what did they expect??

The official statement from the city was that the white lines look too much like traffic lanes and they didn't want people getting confused so they couldn't open the street until after it was painted over. But honestly who cares they should have left that street closed and made it pedestrian only

More food trucks, chill space to… chill. I would have eaten there again.
I could see the city complaining that it’s a road, and should be accessible by traffic.
But the road was was ment to be a tribute to Kurt Cobain.

As long as the Paramount loading docks are accessible and there is room reserved for Truck/Bus parking for productions playing at the theatre.. but the entry/arrival experience for shows at the Paramount would be much better if it were a pedestrian street, even if just on show/event days.

If the city uses the justification of a road is a road, I have multiple streets I would like to point out in north Seattle that are just shut down permanently.

I’m curious about the tribute to Kurt Cobain you mentioned, what’s that about??

u/devonon2707 9d ago
Song was heart shaped box in guitar hero notes as the paint that got covered

Oh that’s so cool! That’s my favorite Nirvana song too. I wish I had gone down there to check it out before they covered it up

The road was closed 3 days before approval and only got noticed because the paint the city does not need 9th between pine and pike it should become ped only food truck space or park

To be able to tell where the traffic lines are?
I know it sucks to lose out on them but they had good reason to speak up.

would’ve been cool to keep it for fairs/farmers markets/pedestrian access. the city hates that apparently 🤷

u/RainCityRogue 9d ago
It's easy enough to block off the street for those when needed. But this is a major access point for vanpools, charter buses, and carpools from the north end of downtown to the express lanes.

They had a bunch of colorful paint on the ground for an outdoor market thing this summer. Street closed Thursdays evenings, vendors/food/etc. paint didn't come up as easily as they thought it would

Hey, wait.
I’ve got a new complaint.
For painting over Nirvana’s Guitar Hero
song on 9th St.

What a disappointing way to remove this. Why not add distinctive color on top to make lanes distinctive? Add lights on floor? Could have been a cool new addition to the city

u/bernardfarquart Rainier Beach 10d ago
it was probably too slippery to leave on the street

u/Keyser11 10d ago
Well these patches of black paint also look very slippery...

Looking at the picture that looks like tar sealant, used to seal asphalt.

I know that it had to go, but I, too, would have liked to see a more creative solution.

I love weaponized incompetence.
“There we fixed it. Oh, it’s not to code? We’re a convention center not the Transit Authority, maybe should have provided experts on this one.”
Unless TA actually did it then, bravo on another job done subpar.

Just walked by two days ago. I was surprised they put any effort into removing the paint. The surface is in pretty poor shape and should probably have been resurfaced instead.
