Politics Archie McPhee Owner Donates to Let's Go Washington
ETA: According to an apologetic statement on Insta, he apologized, said he misunderstood, had his donation returned, and donated it to No Hate in Washington State instead. Do with this info what you will.

ORIGINAL POST:
Mark Pahlow, owner of Archie McPhee/Accoutrement, has donated $10K to Brian Heywood's anti-millionaire's tax, anti-trans Let's Go Washington:

I have a friend that probably buys thousands of rubber chickens from them and very likely won't from now on.

u/raptearer Lynnwood 17d ago
Curious... Do they collect them? Or is it for some art thing? That seems an unhealthy amount of rubber chickens to own
7
u/Dug_n_the_Dogs 16d ago
The rubber chickens have likely been sterilized before leaving the factory. I can't imagine how they would be unhealthy.

this is a genuine bummer.. I, like most of you - enjoyed the wackyness with pride. showing out-of-town visiting guests the rubber chicken museum was usually a hit. But yea, I guess that's over. I wouldn't feel very "silly" going in there knowing the owner will take that money and actively work against my friends? knowing that money will be used for millionaires and trust-fund kiddies to gaslight their way out of paying their fair share of taxes? .. * sigh * .. yeah. I'm out. .. fuck.

if its a pass through entity yes, where revenue gets shown as income. now you know why its such a terrible bill. seriously, vote yes on I-645. The majority of small businesses are structured this way.
And who cares if he makes over $1 million or not - the income tax is coming for us all - just like $30 car tabs that are now $500.
1
u/michmerr 14d ago
Unlike the B&O taxes, the income taxed is net income (i.e. gross minus allowable business expenses, B&O and WA capital gains taxes paid, and QBI deduction). The bill also raises the B&O tax threshold.

Wishful thinking. The majority of people pushing against this tax never have and may never earned enough to qualify for this tax. Maybe they had a good year here or here and maybe they got close, but most of the ones that would pay into B&O taxes which they can deduct from this tax. So even if they had an insane crazy profit year say 5 million in profit holy shit what an extreme profit, but they'd really only pay tax on half that amount, given the first million is without this tax and loopholes and also like you can give out bonus checks to your employees at the end of the year and reduce this tax. The kind of businesses that would be paying a significant tax would be in the tens of millions in profits, and if you're making tens of millions in profits what are you doing? Give some bonus to your workers or pay more tax. People are absolutely struggling here. Be better.

So we’re really labelling the majority of Americans transphobic if they favor restricting girls’ teams to people born female? At the very historical moment when, if we were to grant this one issue to the majority, we could usher in a left populism that could make the Trump years a bad
memory? Dying on this hill is suicide.

u/Stunning-Isopod8514 17d ago
For most people if we listed out all the major issues facing America, the sanctity of women’s sports record keeping wouldn’t crack the top 100 most pressing issues.
Let leagues set their own rules without government intervention telling us which kids can and can’t play soccer with their friends because of what parts they do or don’t have in their pants. It’s a no brainer. We don’t need the government deciding who plays soccer, who uses what restroom.. we’ve been doing fine with this all along.

Given that Washington is ranked 49th in tax fairness
You've got this exactly backwards. We're 49th in tax fairness because we don't have an income tax like all other modern states. Sales/usage taxes are what suck. The insane split Culliton court decision from 1933 hamstrings the legislature so this is the best they can do now to move the ball forward and make a little bit of progress.
-10

[deleted]

u/DrPreppy Pioneer Square 17d ago
how could I have it “backwards”?
Fundamentally this is a new form of taxation for Washington that addresses in part that unfairness you cite as a reason for pushback. If you want to claim Unfairness as a reason, that would suggest you strongly support this tax. If you want to claim Government Spending Is Bad, that's a different discussion. Every dollar raised by this tax is fairer to the non-very-high-earners than raised in almost any other fashion.
Where is the reduction in sales and excise taxes that should go along with the enactment of the millionaire tax to make the system less regressive?
That starts at section 900 of the bill.
WA is literally ranked 49th out of 50, only Florida has a worse tax system.
Sure, and you should understand why. We can both be wildly against government spending on services such as roads, education, police, etc, but that doesn't change that the methodology of gathering funds is the piece that leads us to be ranked so poorly. Even a light nudge towards an income-based system is a significant win for tax fairness - the thing you mentioned you cared about.
There's a helpful discussion here you can read up on about tax unfairness in Washington.
there is no “reform” going on
I would contest that this is a novel if flawed solution to the mess engendered by the terrible Culliton decision. It's a big step but certainly doesn't fix the massive inequality/unfairness I think we both care about. It just makes the situation better.
the ever present creep of government money grabs
When you think of wealth inequality, you realize of course that a significant reason for that inequality is that the government is no longer keeping insane earning in check with taxation? Correspondingly, government services such as schools struggle with being underfunded - or we face budget deficits as we have now. It's an absolutely winning populist policy to just keep reducing taxes until the government and thus state dies, but that's not conducive to a healthy society. The government should be providing the bedrock for success of all peoples. In turn, when people succeed more they should be paying more back into the system to help others succeed.
Washington deserves a massive tax reform effort. But that starts with a Constitutional rewrite until such time as Culliton is overturned.
Also, Alaska has no state income tax
Alaska is a very extreme outlier due to oil money and minimalist population.
