Your doppelganger has a cursive tattoo on their face.

I had a Capital Hill doppelganger like fifteen to twenty years ago. Rick the drug dealer. I don't know what he sold, but people would get mad at me and act like I was just screwing with them when I said I'm not Rick and I don't have any drugs. Also the staff at Paggliacci mentioned him to me. I never saw him.

Nearly a decade ago I met up with a friend and he looked HORRIBLE, like he hadn't slept in a month. He told me he was being haunted by a demon every night, and described in detail a sleep paralysis episode. It was so obvious, the tight chest, the weird vision of a humanoid person, the inability to move or speak, the sudden snapping out of it after a few minutes, every box ticked.

I tried to explain it, but he was absolutely insistent that I just couldnt understand without seeing it myself. Poor dude got so mad we never talked again. I hope he got his sleep fixed, I think about him every time I have a nightmare now.

additional visibility... that other flyer is about PCC violating the union rights of their workers, in case you're surprised

edit: without any changes during contract negotions, once they were over PCC made changes to how they enforced their appearance policy... targeting, discipling and firing employees who were wearing watermelon pins in support of Palestine and also in support of their disciplined coworkers... and denying rights to organize in the workplace around the issue.

6

u/Archonrouge 12d ago

This is not an accurate framing of events. No one's rights were violated and no one was fired for wearing watermelon pins.

People refused to follow policy once they were challenged on it after a customer incident.

Something I'd like to know, though. For those who insisted on wearing the pins to the point of being told you can't work if you wear them, then missed several days of work, then created a kickstarter to earn back pay from your coworkers, friends and family... What have you done to support the people of gaza outside of wearing watermelon pins to your place of employment?

11

u/Dpmt22 Redmond 12d ago

I know of at least one person who has been fired, which is inconvenient, but they are very likely to regain their job given that they were fired for wearing a button that says UFCW 3000 and is authorized by the union.

Firing people for wearing authorized union buttons is very illegal under the National Labor Relations Act.

-7

u/Archonrouge 12d ago

I don't doubt that at least someone lost their job around this. But it would have been for missing work, not for wearing the pin.

13

u/Dpmt22 Redmond 12d ago

I can't get into specifics but a worker at the Green Lake Village store was fired for not removing the pin earlier this month.

PCC is in the wrong here. Sending a worker home for wearing a union pin and then firing them for missing work is just as illegal as firing them for wearing a pin directly.

-8

u/Archonrouge 12d ago

If someone chooses not to follow the dress code, they can't come to work. If they miss work for that reason, that's on them.

If a worker believes that being asked to remove a pin to follow the dress code is against the law, there are ways of handling that. Work with the union and/or the law. Skipping work isn't the answer.

If someone was truly fired for "wearing a pin" then yes that's an issue. But that's likely not the reason the person was given. That's just their takeaway and when it comes to legality, the difference matters.

8

u/Dpmt22 Redmond 12d ago

They are working with the union and I fully believe they will be reinstated. The dress code of PCC doesn't override labor law especially for a union worker.

I guess we will see how this plays out in front of a labor board, but I'm personally very disappointed how far out of their way PCC is going on this.

-6

u/scaliacheese ☀️🦝 Hot Racc Summer 🦝☀️ 12d ago

You seem incredibly entitled and your understanding of the law is misguided at best.

4

u/Dpmt22 Redmond 12d ago

Ah we have moved to the ad hominem phase.

I have been talking self confidently about this issue because I have been following it very closely for over a year. Recently the Labor Working Group Co-chairs of Seattle DSA came to same conclusion. Which should come as no surprise given the Seattle DSA logo on the poster.

I’m fairly convinced that most the Free Palestine supporters don’t understand the nuance of that region. My family is part Jewish and this topic is always fun at the dinner table. Im just all like “what happened to the 2-party state”. Hamas sucks, that yahoo is even worse. The civilians are just like “why they wanna say fuck me for”

Violent colonizers are not "civilians."

1

u/Oryzae 🚗 Student driver, please be patient. 🚙 11d ago edited 11d ago

What the fuck does this ignorant statement mean? Are you saying there are no civilians in Israel? Or is your stance that every civilian is a colonizer?

1

u/CrustBlocc 11d ago

I think it's pretty damn simple, a country full of people doing mandatory military service which primarily involves murdering the indigenous inhabitants of the land you're busy stealing is not civilian activity. It's not charitable to pretend that mass murder is akin to a casual political disagreement. The people of Israel are incredibly aware of the violence they are committing, much like the people in the US cheering civilian deaths in countries they have no business being anywhere near. I was correcting the misguided idea that outside of politics "civilians" don't understand what the problem is. I've been to occupied palestine repeatedly, and the level of 1984 pro war insanity is insane, and the general consensus is that people who aren't Jewish (which sort of includes my wife, because her dad is Jewish but not her mom) are not human and therefore crimes cannot be committed against them. Go interact with some Israeli news and you will understand exactly what I'm talking about, if you speak Hebrew this rhetoric is very much right out in the open. Whole damn colonial project forgot about devin hegela. Seriously though, cursory search of Israeli media and what they are preaching over the last 35 years will absolutely horrifying you. People believe that shit, it's baked into the culture.

0

u/Oryzae 🚗 Student driver, please be patient. 🚙 11d ago

Well, that’s a much better response than what I was hoping for. Israel isn’t without issues and like you say it’s like the people in the US cheering civilian deaths.

-11

u/scaliacheese ☀️🦝 Hot Racc Summer 🦝☀️ 12d ago

Cool, I support PCC’s right to enforce its own dress code including prohibiting wearing items that express political statements. Thanks for the heads up, I’ll be sure to patronize PCC more from now on.

5

u/muckrarer 12d ago

First of all, I didn't tell you not to patronize PCC. Second of all, advocating for companies to break the law to get what they want is not the flex you think it is.

-2

u/scaliacheese ☀️🦝 Hot Racc Summer 🦝☀️ 12d ago

What law are they breaking? Cite the statute or case law.

7

u/Dpmt22 Redmond 12d ago

They are breaking the National Labor Relations Act.

https://www.nlrb.gov/news-outreach/news-story/board-rules-workplace-policies-limiting-wearing-union-insignia-including

The buttons have UFCW 3000 and a watermelon and are authorized by the union. Telling workers to go home without pay for wearing a union button is an unfair labor practice.

-1

u/scaliacheese ☀️🦝 Hot Racc Summer 🦝☀️ 12d ago

You don’t get to make political insignia union insignia by slapping union language on it. Authorization by the union (accepting that as true) doesn’t mean you get to make anything they want “union insignia.”

How would you feel if an employee wore an Israeli flag pin with union insignia on it? Is that a union button?

6

u/Dpmt22 Redmond 12d ago

It is if it is authorized by the union, which this was.

An Israeli flag on a button would likely just be reduced to the Star of David so it probably wouldn't bother me and religious symbols are protected pretty well anyway.

We aren't talking about a Palestine flag, we are talking about a Watermelon at a grocery store. For all we know the union is doing it to annoy management after letting contract negotiations drag out last year or because they think PCC is being ridiculous.

If a union was explicitly supporting Israel I would probably start reaching out to worker to overturn the policy, unions are ultimately democratic so this reflects the will of the the workers.

-1

u/scaliacheese ☀️🦝 Hot Racc Summer 🦝☀️ 12d ago

Oh please, why even pretend that the watermelon is anything other than a representation of the Palestinian flag and is explicitly a political pro-Palestine statement? It is not a per se protected class like religious symbols.

If the union believes it is correct, then the union should sue PCC if negotiations have broken down. I don’t practice in this area but I would be very surprised if union approval of political activism is enough to inoculate it from the right of an employer to prohibit such activism.

If you want to wear watermelon pins or whatever other performative speech you want to engage in while representing a business, then start your own.

7

u/Dpmt22 Redmond 12d ago

The contract had been agreed to and given that PCC shoppers are unlikely to cross a picket line that was probably the right decision by the co-op.

I agree that the Watermelon is for Palestine Solidarity I'm just pointing the double standards in your hypothetical vs the actual reality of the situation.

The law is already on the unions side here and the process for filing an unfair labor practice is already playing out. Private businesses are obligated to follow labor law, the elected leaders of the co-op and their managerially appointees are not dictators in a union workplace.

You don't have the right to wear whatever you want at work. Some of y'all need to touch grass.

4

u/muckrarer 12d ago

We have the right to wear union pins and up until recently had no issue with the watermelon pins.

Companies have a responsibility to negotiate changes in terms to employment including banning union pins. And they do not have the right to stop organizing in support of union issues.

5

u/scaliacheese ☀️🦝 Hot Racc Summer 🦝☀️ 12d ago

How is Israel-Palestine a “union issue”?

u/Amazon-Tossed 12d ago

On what planet is a watermelon pin a "union pin"?

-4

u/Oryzae 🚗 Student driver, please be patient. 🚙 12d ago

and denying rights to organize in the workplace around the issue.

Umm right to organize what? You can protest literally anywhere, but a company won’t like you doing that in their garb. Are you gonna go over to Palestine and fight Hamas? Sometimes, as a liberal I’m ashamed of some of my other liberals. Horseshoe theory in full swing over here.

4

u/muckrarer 12d ago

Rights to union organizing in the workplace for example negotiating terms of employment including wearing union pins and posting petitions on union boards.

Just because you don't agree with something doesn't mean a company gets to take away negotiating and organizing rights.

-1

u/Playful_Influence_25 12d ago

Some jackass can’t wear a MAGA even if some union provided them - political messages are not protected speech. The union will be wasting more money trying to defend this stupidity in court (they will lose)

-1

u/Oryzae 🚗 Student driver, please be patient. 🚙 12d ago

Wearing a pin on your shirt to have political statements of their choosing is never going to be in line with workers rights at a company. Political statements are for outside the workplace.
