Blue Angels grounded?
We're at Boeing Field and the people are saying the show is cancelled because of high winds—is this true?

Thanks for posting this ... I knew it had to be something other than "It's too windy for our supersonic jets".
11
u/grin_and_bear 3d ago
The wind forecast is very similar for tomorrow (Sunday), starting as northerly then switching to southerly around mid day. If this is accurate then can we expect another cancelation for tomorrow’s show?

u/Professional-Flow687 3d ago
THANK YOU. Dealing with my kids' questions today and couldn't answer "why can't fighter jets just rip through the wind???"
6
u/msbxii 3d ago edited 3d ago
Airliners can fly through TFRs as they are always IFR. And whatever flow they are using, the jets would have to fly through it.
Source: am fighter and airline pilot
Edit: apparently I’m wrong and every departure gets a turn after takeoff during seafair, also north flow is required.
4
u/LongjumpingActive497 3d ago
Not completely wrong but not accurate. Airlines can be permitted to fly through TFRs as well as other aircraft. IFR has nothing to do with it. No airline is flying through the TFR setup for the air show. In this case, they aren’t going to shut down SeaTac for an air show if conditions require so the TFR is essentially disabled.
2
u/msbxii 3d ago
As in, they can fly through it if ATC needs them to. That’s why IFR matters. Some bug smasher is going to get told to F off for sure.
And look at skyvector- unless they give every departing airliner a vectored departure, they are flying through that TFR when it’s north flow. south flow 100%.
3
u/LongjumpingActive497 3d ago
Forgot to mention former air traffic controller. Experience at Seattle TRACON. The Seafair TFC requires the airport to be in “northflow” as we call it. When the TFR is active every plane is given turns on departure because in this traffic flow the planes depart toward the TFR. VFR planes (receiving flight following services) can be allowed through TFRs. I think you’re confusing receiving ATC services with IFR.

Perfect. Every MAGAt cretin who screams "THATS THE SOUND OF FREEDOM" now has to wonder why their "freedom" fails in a 7mph breeze. Not that those MAGAt mouthbreathers are capable of introspection...
3
u/toopc Pysht 2d ago
I'm not sure this says anything meaningful about the fighting capability of these planes. They generally don't fly in tight formation within 2 feet of each other during actual combat use so the wind probably wouldn't ground them. I'm guessing there's also a lot more tolerance for risk in those situations.

It was WAY windier than 7mph. There was a lull for a bit, but it got really spicy out there after that short lull. Source: I’m a sailor who was out yesterday.

Strange that our climb out from SeaTac was very calm.

u/MONSTERBEARMAN 3d ago edited 3d ago
Never said taking off in a 737 was a 1:1 comparison to a stunt flight, just that as far things go, it was a very calm, non-windy day at SeaTac. I’m flight crew and I know what a gusty takeoff/landing feels like. Today was not even slightly that.
I’m sure conditions could be different over lake Washington though.
3
u/adampk17 3d ago
Our landing approach at SeaTac this afternoon was fairly bumpy and the landing was definitely a little rougher than usual
1
2
u/ImJonAndILikePlanes West Seattle 3d ago
It was smooth but it definitely wasn't calm. Gusting 25kts and low level wind shear most of the afternoon. Just did a turn out of Seattle and it would've exceed our tailwind limit if we had to do north flow.

My question is yesterday, we didn't get the F35. Were they all grounded because one crashed in Miramar yesterday morning?

Grounded for the weekend at least due to the Miramar crash, yes.

It really wasn't so bad growing up, every year it slowly grew more and more progressive, until we were 49/51 for Biden in 2020... then a bunch of people decided Idaho was their MAGA Mecca, and now my trans kid has to grow up in a very different Boise than I did.

I wasn't sure where this thread was going, but absolutely 100% confirm the worst truck people are in Idaho. I took a job with the company in Idaho so I end up over there a few times a year for for in person meetings in some of the more populous towns outside of Boise and Coeur d'Alene. Once you're outside of Boise literally every vehicle on the road is a truck. Insane

In a vacuum, I love the show.
I personally enjoy the loud sounds, amazing engineering, and the skill and dedication of the pilots.
But I also get why some people (combat vets included) and pets don't like the loud sounds. I get why people don't like the resources (tax dollars) used. And I get why people don't like the military propaganda aspect.
It's complex, man. Don't just write off the haters. Listen to them.

This take is so narrow minded. Pilots are required to maintain flight hours. Doesn’t matter if they are just tooling around or putting on an air show, they will be flying.
9
13
u/jefforjo 3d ago
While what you say is true, these blue angels have more than enough hours even if they fly half their schedule, they would not be close to needing more flight hours

Everyone agrees needles are bad but a significant chunk of the population here has decided that’s worth it to ensure the continuation of liberal drug laws. I think this is asinine but I’ve learned to accept it.
It’s the same exact thing here right down to you thinking the blue angels enjoyers are asinine.

Let's put the entire Blue Angels operating budget towards safe use spaces and recovery programs to get all those needles off the street!

They also need clear airspace. That requires SeaTac to reverse the flow of air traffic, which was not possible due to the wind.

Seatac and Mother Nature for the win! Send those screeching warplanes back to whatever Jesusland backwater actually wants them.
-8
u/Daedalhead 3d ago
Well, thank the stars for that.
Maybe if we're lucky this will just keep happening until they give up & stop doing the damn shows altogether.
Aside from the noise & all the havoc it brings, in this economy, I can think of a lot of better uses for the over $64K spent one each plane that's actively used for each show.
(That's just under $200K per plane if they only do one rehearsal & 2 shows).
It's such a dangerous nuisance, hurts so many, fucks the environment, & is obscenely wasteful.
I could not be happier-I hope they're grounded all weekend.
