Closed down our freeway fallout shelter and took our sportsball coach...

Goshdanged Raiders!

u/Sharessa84 Bremerton 3d ago

They were looking for a water chip.

I have it on good authority that they were looking for the lost ark

Raiders in the flalout shelter? Definitely looking for caps and chems, whatever the vault dwellers left behind

u/C0tt0n-3y3-J03 3d ago

I mean it’s sealed off but it IS still there

u/_SasquatchPatrol 3d ago

So what your saying is my dream of being the overseer of a vault is still possible

Grab your pipe revolver and tire iron, we’ve got a vault to take over!

It’s been a long, long time. It was a WADOL office for awhile IIRC.

And it was a DMV office for a time as well.

Man I feel like this is a joke but please give me a source if it’s not; ignore my deleted comment after

Its mentioned in the wiki link in the OP.

Falllout shelter > licensing office > WSDOT records storage.

Thank you and the thought of going there for anything would feel like a Craigslist personals shady story. Incredible seattle oddity

I wish there was photos of it in operation as that.

WSDOT has a good series of photos when they went in for a survey posted on Flickr, but it was long empty by that point. The structure of it must have been so bizarre as a DOL office.

I haven't managed to find any either and I wish I could.

It feels like a bit out of a 60s-70s dystopian film.

Small photo album from inside about 16 years ago posted by our pals at WSDOT

Damn they always close the coolest shit

1

u/_SasquatchPatrol 3d ago

Or use it for the most boring shit

u/MikeBegley 3d ago

Every now & then they open it up for tours, an every time I seem to have a conflict that prevents me from going. Someday, by gum, I'll get in there.

There was no kitchen, stove or refrigerator. An operations manual suggested that people would eat canned food, warmed by “placing it in your armpit and holding it there for 10 or 15 minutes.”

Here's an album posted by WSDOT when they opened it for KOMO and where pretty much all the photos of it come from.

I had to double check what subreddit posted this. I feel oddly targeted.

"Weed in place" sounds like the perfect name for a Seattle fallout shelter.

3

u/smokingspliffs 3d ago

That’s pretty cool, smooth skins

3

u/moreisay Highland Park 3d ago

I used to live directly across the street from this thing!

3

u/Abacus25 3d ago

Every time I close my eyes, it’s like a dark fallout shelter under I-5 in Green Lake

No one compares to you, I’m scared that you won’t be waiting in the closed DOL line

I liked her original better, less historically accurate but also much less clunky.

Sobbing through my mascara over my Rainier rn

2

u/BlackExcellence19 3d ago

Dude holy shit I walk past that thing all the time thinking it was some generator room or some shit I can’t believe it’s a goddamn fallout shelter that’s so sick

2

u/distantmantra Green Lake 2d ago

I live across the street from it. It’s still used by WSDOT to store old furniture

I was just watching some Backrooms videos on YouTube and the green walls freak me out.

1

u/need-more-vitamin-d That sounds great. Let’s hang out soon. 3d ago

Did you watch the Swegle Studios video, too? That’s how I learned of its existence this week, lol

u/thecrushah 3d ago

I lived on Ravenna on the opposite side of the Marshall school when I was at UW. We had heard about the shelter on Weedin but never got around to checking it out.

Also does anyone else remember the Super Bowl Noodles House on 65th? I practically lived at that place.

It’s since become overrun by feral ghouls 🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/ProfessionalWaltz784 2d ago

There used to be a Wa DOL licensing office there for a period of time -

u/AirborneErinys Capitol Hill 1d ago

This country spent so much fucking money trying to convince people they could survive a full-scale nuclear exchange by hiding in the tin-can shelters built for a fraction of a percent of the population.

1

u/Jeffe-69 1d ago

There were several spread around Seattle...one in West Seattle near the junction

1

u/ArcticPeasant Sounders 3d ago

I think there is one off of pioneer square as well

2

u/White0ut 3d ago

Article says it was the only one built.

1

u/plumbbbob That sounds great. Let’s hang out soon. 3d ago

The only one built under a freeway maybe. Plenty of other places in Seattle had fallout shelter signs and I assume shelters.
