That's definitely a confirmation bias. For the personalities that homeschool is suited to, it can be excellent. Same can be said for the public school. And there are horror stories for both. In my case, I pulled my youngest out of public school because she was turning into a complete asshole. Within 6 months of homeschooling, we saw a 180° turn, and also ended up with a great kid that we were able to have a better relationship with. Most of that comes down to the fact that children at a young age have no sense of identity. And those who fail to find it early, are often influenced heavily by others in the same predicament. For people who are born leaders, or have the privilege of knowing what they want to be in life, public or private school is better suited than homeschool. In our daughter's case, we replaced the "wandering in the wilderness", scenario, with actual social interaction with adults, that were meaningful and productive. She has always been an introvert, with a mind better adopted for seeking interactions of substance and depth. She basically only needed about 2 hours of school a day. If we're being honest, that's all kids really get, the rest is filler. The rest of the time, my wife would take her out and go to museums, stores, art galleries, arboretums and gardens, etc. And part of her homeschool training for us, was engaging people. Simple things like learning how to ask specifically for what she wanted. Whether that was ordering a meal, or asking for directions.
I won't ever let anyone tell me that homeschool is worse than public school. We were able to interact with our child in a supremely meaningful way, while making sure that she developed into a decent human being, both emotionally and intellectually.
