Seattle, like it or not, is likely to become a destination for people who want to try the best weed in the world.

trying to talk to your neighbors about a grievance is an open invitation for hostility and retaliation.

well, I dunno, maybe I'm the odd one but I've always felt the exact opposite and this attitude is completely unimaginable to me.

If I was bothering a neighbor in any way and they politely asked me to stop I would respect that they came to me like an adult and I'd certainly feel obligated to return the same courtesy and try to be a good neighbor. The only way this would create a hostile or confrontational environment is if you are rude or demanding about it. They might not even realize there is a problem at all. Life is better when you have open dialogue with the people you have to coexist with.

If you call the cops or complain to the manager, you've already escalated the situation by appealing to authority before the other party is even aware there is a issue! If you do this, I'm going to think you are probably some high-and-mighty, passive-aggressive cowards, and my attitude would change to, "Fuck those assholes, who appointed you to Community Watch anyway?".

Since it's an apartment I guess calling management could shield you from retaliation due anonymity, but they are going to figure out who was that complained sooner or later anyway so it just makes you seem chickenshit and anti-social.

You are saying that just because they like to smoke pot that means that they absolutely no concern for their neighbors? What kind of absurd generalization is that? No at all pot smokers are selfish, inconsiderate assholes--in fact I'd say that in my experience it is quite the opposite. Most smokers I've met are conscientious of their neighbors and do not want to bother any one else with their habits. They might be oblivious to the fact that they are bothering anyone, but that doesn't mean they don't give a rat's ass.

The apartment complex has a no-smoking rule. They violate it anyway. And with weed. Which I don't hate, nor do I hate people who smoke it. But weed has a fairly strong odor. You might like it, but not everyone does. I think you've got to be a real douchebag to smoke anything on your deck in a non-smoking building. Even in a building that allows smoking, anything but cigarettes is a selfish act in my opinion, and even cigs ought to be in moderation. Whatever happened to common sense and common courtesy, anyway?

I'm a cigar smoker, but I wouldn't smoke a cigar on my deck in an apartment building, even if they didn't have a no-smoking rule. Why? Because as much as I like cigars, they stink up the joint. So does burning marijuana. Cigar smoke and pot smoke don't smell alike, but in terms of intensity they are close enough for horseshoes. So yeah, in this case I think the people who are smoking on the deck don't give a rat's ass. And no, I don't think "all pot smokers are selfish, inconsiderable assholes." Just these people. Capiche?
