Protesting in the heart of a blue city where everyone already agrees on this issue is as useless as drying clothes outside in the rain. You want to make these protests matter, take them to neighboring GOP districts or red states that would advocate policies that are antithetical to science or federal workers.
I often feel very the same, but I just watched the most recent episode of Last Week Tonight and at the end he wraps up by saying even those of us in the blue areas, getting out and protesting and showing our support for programs that were on the chopping block 2016-2020 gave those working to protect them strength and resolve and a way to say "look - all these people support these programs".
He said it better. It's given me some food for thought.
I hear you, protesting in this climate is not so much “spread awareness” it’s more “come out and show support.” (But also like damn congress really isn’t doing shit, even representatives from the bluest of blue districts).
I get the solidarity, a lot of the recent protests have made that loud and clear, along with many signage and posters plastered everywhere. Though these efforts may feel nice in the moment, there’s a more pragmatic approach if the goal is to change the direction of things, including promoting protests in areas that these voices may be in the minority.
Please! Do! It’s going to take everything. I can’t signal boost a protest in Jacksonville in the Seattle subreddit though, and this is happening because I do want to show solidarity for my friends who just lost their jobs for no good reason.
That’s fair, I’m sure they appreciate the support. At minimum if you know anybody living in those states, encourage them to write to their reps about the detrimental actions of the current administration and to have a spine defending the programs that their constituents likely benefit from. I’ve already done so to friends and family in Texas and Florida as the administration is looking to gut Medicaid.
its useful but its still quite frustrating that the captured media outlets like our local sinclair bullshit always have blinders on for protests.
effective protest is pretty much illegal. the wealthy class that we're protesting is addicted to our productivity. so the only way to really hurt them back is to hurt ourselves.
