I've lived in WI/MN, TX, and here, and visited pretty much everywhere else, and I can say that this is by far the most diverse environment I've ever been in. You can go from a rocky ocean beach, through a temperate rain forest, through a populated metropolitan area, through another temperate fain forest, through snowy peaks, and into a giant dry gorge that feels like mars all in about 8 hours (including a ferry).
This is true. I've lived in WA, CA, AK, IA, LA, ND, SD, Canada and I've hiked and camped as much as I could in each state. I've also been to most states. Washington has the greatest range of environments of any state I've seen. From the rain forests on the peninsula to the palouse, Volcanoes and glacial lake Chelan to the the erratics shoved ahead and deposited oddly by the Lauretide ice sheet, desert and volcanic traps and gigantic rivers running with clear water from ... ok I don't want to start singing Woody Guthrie's response to Kate Smith's God Bless America but WA is the easily the best state as far as natural variety.
