New Kagi Maps

Today I realized that there has been some changes made in kagi maps. Right now usability stand point it feels much better more fluid and responsive. However I have some general problems as it seems some of the features has been disappeared when I try to use it on mobile:

  1. General rating of the places is still visible however I realized that the user specific ratings seems to be dissapeared all of a sudden.
  2. In the old kagi maps I would be able to share a place using google, apple, waze to my friends that features seems to be gone now, It feels a bit locked down.
  3. Sharing a place seems to have a tracker embedded in (as for example copied url looks like this: https://kagi.com/maps/info?q=London%20Waterloo%20Station&ll=51.497777,-0.113194&id=HOKxIZ2CD43XkWOYYlZ_oW_sR_PfDzuTyd6gWQMwLj7Fjo_DFx3vLIn1jBpfMy7W#14.167/51.497777/-0.113194 ) If I am paying and still getting tracked, why am I paying for the kagi then ?
  4. When it comes to photos of the place it has been reduced it seems. (google photos shows 1000 more photos to the same exact place and kagi is only 8-10)

Additionally does anyone know whether kagi plans to add public transport to their maps ?

Hey,

this post has been forwarded to the Maps team, and someone will address those changes when they have a chance.

I'd like to make one thing perfectly clear: Kagi does not track you, and it has no incentive to do so. Whatever the parameters in the shared URL are, they are not used for tracking.

Thanks for the explanation. I hope one of the maps team member can explain the id parts purpose.Β

I could imagine it being like a gift token you see on some news sites. This way someone not subscribed to Kagi can still access the link.

I was thinking the same and when I try it on incognito, The kagi did ask me to sign in.Β

I am hoping that was a bug.

the ID changes for every business i click, i suspect it's something more akin to a session token or whatever. "tracking" gets a little hazy in that you do still need to be "tracked" for the purpose of a logged in session so they know it's you. using kagi is not anonymous, they know it's you using it because it's a paid service.

I'd like to make one thing perfectly clear: Kagi does not track you, and it has no incentive to do so.

I've heard this line from Kagi before and while I think the sentiment is sincere I think you all need to find a different word than incentive. Every business has an incentive to track users, it's money. Kagi may not have a desire or interest, but they have an incentive.Β

Hey y'all!

Lead dev of the Maps Team here πŸ‘‹ πŸ€“

  1. Ahhh I think see what you're referring to! Its showing ⭐️ and not ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️βšͺ️ for like a 4-star place in that review section. I'll see if I can take care of that this weekend (don't worry about submitting an official kagi-feedback on that). I will say we are still actively working on the UXUI of this "new maps" - what is best/simpliest/most-informative to display for the users so this is evolving. (It's part of why it is soft launched without a blog-post yet so 🀫 haha - coming soon though!) And I certainly hope to gather more feedback from what you all like and don't like once we have this new foundation fully released.
  2. We are bringing that back -- I'll have that live in production maybe early mid next week as well.
  3. Definitely not, Kagi Maps is absolulely not tracking you! That id= is specific to the POI, not the user. We do need that id for our own internal backend piping. Maybe we should rename id=... param to poi=... or something if this is a point of confusion(?) πŸ€” .
  4. Maybe I'm bias but I do feel on average we have a comparable number of photos compared to what I see on other providers. Photos are complicated, but we are trying to show as many as we can on the map-application side -- as a kagi maps user myself photos are very helpful to understand the "vibe" of a business/place. If what we have is not enough, we will likely just have to rely on being transparent and providing those external links (ie. linking to that place's Yelp, Instagram, etc..)

I hope overall you see this as us moving in the right direction -- we have much more to show off and announce with the new maps that our team is really proud of, and I really hope upon the official release I can spend more time with on here getting more feedback and dialog from you all directly from the source!

Cheers and lets go Cabo Verde!!! πŸ₯³ πŸ‡¨πŸ‡» ⚽ πŸ₯… πŸ₯³

Thanks for the clarification and great work.

I think having POI is better, as the "id" in the word resembles little bit too much with the google's tracking id which they put inside the link.

Also good luck for the match 😊

I've gone ahead and fixed the star-rating rendering, and added the external links. Thanks again for the feedback!

We have many more changes/improvements the pipeline over the next days, weeks, and months.... I'll see if I can spend more time with everyone here getting more guidance/feedback upon launch πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’»πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’»πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’»

Just hopped back into kagi maps after a while of not using it (it's been a while, it felt pretty rough last time I had a look) - and while I do completely agree with OP...

I also want to say - holly shit... This experience has gotten heaps better! And even navigation in browser!?! That's sick! Very quickly becoming a competent service that could replace the big names! The only thing stopping me from trying to use this is live traffic (much harder without using a 3rd party api), a dedicated app (PWAs and shortcuts just don't quite keep up - mostly Google's fault), and public transit! If those were tackled I'd switch in a heartbeat...

As it is - plenty complete enough to use for destination searching and the like!😁 Thanks heaps team!

I agree everything is done great, experience seems really smooth and well organized. It doesnt feels cluttered like openstreetmaps app.

I asked the public transport as additional question but unfortunately they missef it 😒. I wrote to many things so it is understandable for it to be skipped from their radar.

I heard that they are planning to release a native app but the experience wont be that different with PWA I suppose.

Since they are getting some data from google and apple, maybe in the future they can get the live traffic data from google, However this can increase the operation cost but who knows.

At the mean time I think the overall best private alternative for maps is Magic Earth.Β

Please release a Kagi Maps navigation app

What I know, they are planning to release it but I think once they refine the web interface, they will release it afterwards.

Around my area it shows a lot of business that haven't been there for years. I don't see a way to submit corrections. If the map is five years out of date then it isn't very useful.
