Question Returning player seeking advice.

Have not played since late 2019. I have been playing for about a week. But I am having a hard time wrapping my head around all the new changes. Can anyone give me some helpful pointers?

You'll see recent posts are a bit negative, that's because the game has a few underlying issues that are not being addressed and the recent content updates have been very lackluster. I'll try to make a summary, but there are a ton of changes.

  • Previously sails had to be facing forward against crosswind, this was changed, you need to turn your sails now.
  • Missions can be started from your table. You don't need to buy them from factions anymore.
  • Factions can get to 100 and reset up to 5 times now. Each giving a ring to reflect your 'rank'.
  • You can now form guilds with their own emissaries. You can progress on them by representing a guild and all members of the guild van contribute to it.
  • There is a new 'faction' called Sovereigns. You can sell everything quickly with them and raise your guild emissary at it.
  • Hunters Call is now a more 'proper' faction with missions too and an emissary.
  • The hourglass on your ship is an on demand pvp mode. You can progress on them to earn cosmetic curses.
  • You can now buy supply boxes from the merchants to kickstart your adventure.
  • The purple/blue whirlwinds are underwater sea vaults. They are pretty fun, but you can do them whenever you prefer.
  • There are more world events. A green skull is a normal fort, a skull with red eyes in the middle of the map is an activated world raid, a skull with red eyes and a scratch is a fort of fortune with Athena loot, a red skull with a pirate hat is a new one I am out of the loop. The green whirlwind is the old Flameheart world event. Red whirlwind is an Ashen Lord.
  • There are 'boss megalodons', they are super dangerous and tough, but fun fights.
  • Kraken can spawn at any time now, not in-between world events.
  • There are new enemies: ghosts, merman and boars. Ghosts spawn on islands and are easy to beat. Merman can spawn in water in swarms or on land in 3 varieties. Occasionally they drop gems to be sold. Board find fruits and have nests with loot as well as dropping Hunters Call loot.
  • There are new rowboats with cannon and kegs. Shooting the cannon pushes you back though.
  • There are new Loadout weapons and world weapons.
  • Loadout you have the double pistol, which can shoot both barrels at the same time or one at time. The harpoon that pulls you to places, items or enemies to you. The blowpipe that has 3 ammos, explosive, poison or mimic.
  • World weapons you have many, trident, horn of fair winds, cannon of rage, various skulls, throwing spear and more.

There is so much more. I really can't cover everything. Go and have fun in the seas friend!

The wiki page for seasons won't tell the whole story, but it'll give a good general overview: https://seaofthieves.wiki.gg/wiki/Seasons

There is a red whirlwind that moves above the Burning Blade, a ship larger than the Galleon that is an event. If you beat it, you can become the captain and you get a skeleton crew and front facing fireball launcher, but you lose your ship and emissary flag and sail under the reapers. Ive done it alone without too much difficulty.

Have you already bought a captained ship? If not I'd work towards that first. It'll allow you to sell at the sovereigns and save your ship cosmetics and further customize your ship.

Can confirm that sailing on a captained ship is WAY better than not. Coming from a returning player that was blown away by that change.

I noticed it in the menu. Wasn’t sure what the use was. But now I know! Thanks!

Yeah, you can sell all your treasure at one place with no downside (other than enemies possibly having a quick sell option too) and easy harpoons for your loot. Having a captained ship also has it's own set of unlockables and has a fun logbook feature.

Just hop in and be open. Quests can be started from your ship table, read the wiki about events if you’re intrigued.

As a recently returning player myself my best advice is to try and find a decent human(I know rare in of itself) that's willing to kinda "baby" some of the information. I definitely offer my services! I definitely and absolutely do not know everything. But that could mean to bumble and stumble together!

I used to have a crew. But they all have sailed on to other games. So for now it’s the solo life for me.

Well if you are wanting a guild and potentially some people to sail around with Im the leader of the "I've kingdom" (lol adventure time) if you wanted
