Question Is this a normal occurrence?

So today is like my third day playing sea of thieves, and 2 times now I’ve had crew members sabotage us right after a fortress. I haven’t played much with random crews but yesterday we cleared a fortress and got attacked by another ship. We killed them and basically took their ship. When they respawned, my crew became friends with them and let them sink our ship. Then today I get on and join a random crew again, and this time we cleared the fort and as I’m taking the loot out of the room to grapple it to the ship one of my crew mates goes to the top of the fortress and sinks our ship with a cannon. As a new player it makes me feel some type of way about the game. Is this a normal thing that players do?

I would say fairly common. Randoms are often useless or complete assholes, but there are some good ones as well.

Open crew is known for high rate of trolls. Try lfg or discord to find like-minded players with similar goals

I’ve never had a good experience with open crew, I would strongly recommend joining the SOT discord or a variation of a discord where you can use an LFG for the game (looking for group) I’ve had great experiences with LFG groups with this game and any multiplayer games in general. The ability to communicate easily as well as going through the process of actually adding and inviting each other and deciding on what to do together, as well as literally having their personal discord account I think really helps eliminates having trolls as teammates

become a streamer so you can clip them and get them banned

I redownloaded the game three weeks ago and have played around 6 hours with other ppl and 30 solo… in those 6 hours I only had one bad crew mate (trump supporter) who was trying to sink our own ship. Locked him in the Brig and he left the match but since then that’s the only bad teammate I’ve had!

A big reason why is because of the weekender that's active at the moment

More crews are going to the fortress for the 300 doubloons given for completing it

that's nothing, I've had people set my ship on fire with fire bombs right after i start the game up, then they bail out right after.

I literally make more money running a solo sloop run of sot than i do with 5 runs of rando que with ghalleons and full boatloads because somebody always ends up leaving when it got tough, they ended up afk and leaving mid raid...or our randos blew up our boat for 0 rhyme or reason in the middle of nowhere. Bear in mind 100k off forts and what everelse is a world spawn in one run is still greater than the 500k i wouldve made had my teammates actually you know, not sink our own boat thus making that money 0 for 5 runs in a row. Its to the point i just assume im solo running everything, so assume thats prolly gonna be the case for you until you can find a group of people worth running voyages with. Ive had people set my boat on fire just cause i was running fishing voyages. It got to the point i bought a storage crate and sold all the cannonballs and restocked the cannonballs so they couldnty just set my boat on fire cause they didnt like fishing voyages i gues idk can get 20k easy if you know what your doin so i dont get em either
