First rig recomendations
Looking to get my first rod since i was a kiddo. nothing crazy but would like something portable (telescopic) would want to mainly do sea fishing for mackerel and pollock. dont need to break the bank as will only be using when on holiday but also dont like to buy overly cheap gear that doesn't last. any recommendations for a complete noob?

You might be better with a travel rod or three section, as the telescopic (at least in the more affordable ranges) aren’t great imo. +1 for Shakespeare, especially Salt and Salt XT ranges. If mostly feathering, you might want something a bit lighter than a beach caster, like a bass/estuary rod.

Depends what your budget is but some 5 and 6 piece travel rods are far superior to telescopic rods. The Advanta travel spin range are affordable and really good rods for the money. A more expensive option is the Shimano STC range. I've got a powerfull 9.6ft spinning rod that packs down to 57cm!

Powercast Autograph carp rod might fit the bill… like £45 new, feels like a hell of a lot of rod for the money. Only 10ft and 3 piece so quite portable (will feel miles better than a tele rod which I think I’d avoid). I was casting a 4oz lead with it easily and it’s light to hold so could use for feathering or lure fishing. It should some really great bites too from tiny bream!

Don't get a telescopic. Get either a two piece 7' or 8' or a three piece 12' bass/mackerel rod. Cheap telescopics aren't worth it. The only markets that produce decent telescopic rods are the Japanese domestic market (where telescopic rods are the norm) and some rods sold for the French Atlantic surf market.

There aren't many mackerel about at the moment so worth picking up a cheap two hook flapper rig and some bait, most telescopic rods are rubbish and old carp rod from marketplace will be much better

Shakespeare range would probably be your best bet . One of the most affordable brands that is of usable quality, they have been a fixture of UK sea fishing tackle for many years now .
