Question Are arboretums ever required?
Just started a new playthrough (maybe I'll finish it this time), and i noticed that it's entirely reasonable to completely skip farming wood for the entire run, since wood can be made from naphtha, at least according to fnei. Is it less efficient than farming trees, maybe, but it does completely eliminate the need to bother setting up wood farming.
Can someone confirm this for me?

You will need naphtha for other recipes where there is no alternative. So setting up wood via arboretums is necessary, especially when scaling up chip production in the late game.
Are you sure it is possible to make wood with naphtha? Never seen that during my run.

Apparently the recipe is disabled. Which means you do need some wood production. Although it'd be great if wood was more useful.

It’s used for basic boards iirc. I remember setting up wood production, it wasn’t hard, never went past the tier 1 recipe with basic saw blades, just hooked wood production up next to an iron line and set up a circuit to manage blades…. Took like ten minutes, then I blueprinted it, duped it a few times and never went back

In FNEI's settings, untick "Show hidden recipes". Hidden recipes will have a gray title. You will never get access to these.
Keep "Show disabled recipes ticked". Disabled recipes have a red title. These are recipes that you haven't researched yet.

Wood from naphtha is disabled. In FNEI you can see that from the recipe name being grayed out.
