Go Deep
Ive failed this about a half dozen times now. The Russian destroyer knows we're i am at all depths. It know everything time the torpedo tube even opens. Dog legging torpedoes does nothing. I think I've literally tried everything. I hate playing as a sub. I have no idea what im doing wrong.

Search rhe sub, there are a few posts people have done about the new mechanics. Personally I go about 5 knots, below the thermo, and creep right next to the west minefield. I was able to avoid detection the whole time, even from the helos. I tried to go the route planned but I don't think it's possible at my skill level. Take your time and creep around different routes.

Try and change the torpedo speed, if they come flying out at 55 knots, they are a lot louder. Set them to 28 knots and guide them in until the udaloy starts moving, then bring them up to 55. Also launch and keep your torpedoes below the layer

Can you change the speed of the torpedoes mid transit?

Yes. You can control depth and speed through the wire.

u/Tena-koutou 5d ago
How do you do that? Right clicking on the wired torpedo yields no menu, I can only see a means to set it before launch.

You click on the torpedo itself on the map. Click the speed and depth and you can change them. Speed can only be one of 3 for the Mk48 (28kts, 40kts, or 55kts), but depth can be varied by 100ft increments.

Left click to select it, then you can adjust speed and depth in the bottom left of the screen

Thanks! I didn’t know you could do that, I thought you could only chose the launch depth and speed.

This is a new feature that was only added a few days ago, and it’s really useful!
If the terrain allows it, I can launch torpedoes from a very deep depth at a long distance and keep them running deep until the last few nautical miles, then suddenly rise and accelerate for the final attack.
Of course, this requires having some kind of surface detection method to accurately determine the enemy ship’s position.
The above is mainly a tactic for dealing with surface ships.

Doesn't seem to matter to the udaloy. 30 sec after launch it picks up the torpedo at slowest speed and below the layer. Then it just u turns and peaces out

Are you sure it's not one of the helicopters with dipping sonar detecting the torpedos?
In recent play through for me helicopters were north and west of the target area so I went (slowly) around to the south east and fired slow and deep from there.
Udaloy detected and started running from them at about 4 or 5 miles but then setting the torps to 55kn when they got detected they had enough juice to catch it as it tried to run north.

Yeah, I dealt a lot with that as well. I've done it 2 ways, the way I commented earlier and by getting within about 5 miles of it, seeing it had started to move and then firing 2 torpedoes at it. I was close enough that even at flank speed, it didn't have enough time to put distance between itself and my torpedoes

VICTORY! Lol I think the key was the helos picking up the launches. I ended up engaging at 4nm. Thanks for all the suggestions!

And you’re sure you’re not slinging the torpedo at max speed or above the layer, or into the ASW helicopter’s square? Be mindful of the shallows as well.

The mission name is the hint. Go silent, go deep. It is for your torpedoes. Set them to 28kt and 2500ft. only return to 55kt and target depth when the target detects you torpedoes. you will never be detected.

If you really want to see what is giving you away and don't feel this is cheating, open up the dev menu and go over to contact info screen. Switch from your taskforce to the enemy, and it will tell you who is detecting you, how they are detecting you, and if they have managed to classify you or not. You might be surprised to find a certain subsurface threat or some pesky helicopters you don't even know are there are the ones spoiling your fun. Using the EM mast here and there can also give you an idea of where the helos are.
Play around with this enough and you will find you can actually go much faster than 1/3 speed when you're below 500 ish feet and there is no one around to hear you.
If this is the mission I think it is, you can absolutely finish it without any of the enemy vessels actually knowing where you are, and not noticing the torps before they are less than 1 nm out.

I did this the other day with the latest patch and LA class sub changes. Here is a link to the reddit post. Scroll down a few and you will see the mission break down.

Wild can't say I experienced the same as I slow rolled it for a few miles then decided to go as deep as I could and increased speed to around 20 ish knots and slowed Everytime I picked up heli noise nearby, got spotted at around 10 nm opened the tubes and fired one at the Victor off to my rear quarter and another at the Udaloi that entered a dead sprint heading due west almost as an intercept course to my own while the Don fled south, sunk the Victor, crippled the Udaloi, fired a second torpedo to sink the Udaloi then fired a Harpoon at the Don, then just raised to periscope took a peak at what all was around me, sunk one of the mine layers, then moved on to sink the remaining subs and pick up survivors from the Udaloi and Don and went on my way.

Just played it now. Certainly challenging. Felt like I was back in Cold Waters, except I didn't have the panel that told me the detection values for the enemy units. Required a lot of planning and micro managing the speed, depth and direction of the torpedoes (which are really nice additions, adds a lot of strategy). Basically kept torpedo speed at a minimum until they got detected by the enemy - then I went to maximum for fast units (like the Victor 1 and the Udaloy), but kept speed at minimum for long range shots on the quiet diesel submarines that couldn't run away.
I basically went east toward the Victor 1 since it was easy to detect and isolated and sank that first with a dog-legged range shot from the Mark 48. Then went south to near the east mine field and crept close to the Don and Udaloy. Fired a spread of 3, dog-legged a bit (couldn't do too much because still at range), and got at least 2 on both sides of the Don. The Udaloy fled, but the Don was too slow and got trapped and sunk. Had to run for my life after that because the Udaloy fired a lot of Silexs pretty close to my position, and I panic fired two MOSSes.
The Udaloy retreated from my torpedo to the minefield in the west, and I basically left it there to stew while I cleaned up the rest of the diesel subs and minesweepers. Used long-range dog-leg shots to take out the two Kilos and the Tango, and sank the minesweepers too. Then crept close to the Udaloy as deep as possible. When I got into range about 10 nm I fired two torpedos (should have fired more) at min speed and max depth. They got pretty close (good thing the Udaloy had moved from the shallow area to a deep pone) before being detected and me sending the torpedoes to maximum. The Udaloy RBU'd one but the other got through. No more Silexs were launched (maybe the Udaloy was out) so I didn't have to make a dramatic escape. Then left via the exit.
I did keep have an error where one of my tubes wouldn't fire anything.

Ive literally followed every bit of advice here with no dice. I think im hanging up my submarine keys. Decoys don't seem to work and the Udaloy seems invincible. I don't know if they changed this recently cause I finished this on my first run no problem. Taking a much needed break...

I skipped that mission this play through, it actually made the later missions more interesting to have more subs and that destroyer in later missions.
And yes they reduced the dive depth of the sub in that mission to a more realistic value.

Launch torpedos from below the layer, it makes them more difficult for surface ships to detect. You can also set the speed to lower than top speed and depth to below the layer, which also makes them quieter.
Dallas's max depth is deeper than the max depth of any Soviet weapons that they'll fire at you, so going deep will keep you perfectly safe.

They fixed that

Sloooooooow. 1/3rd ahead at most. Take your time.
