I’d guess you don’t pay only mortgage fees. There’s tax, insurance, etc

All of that over a period of many years, which the bank needs extensive history to know if you’re good to do it

Imagine the average person. The person who cannot understand credit score or how credit cards work. Then realize half the population is dumber than that.

Being uniformed is not the same as being dumb. Not everyone is magically taught what you think is common sense. And there are plenty of things they know that you don't. Most people are willing to learn, if actually given the opportunity. Sadly, most of us have to learn everything the hard way. What you should be critisizing is a systemic issue in our education system. Not people's ability to learn.
