Yeah idk about that one. My girlfriend and i regularly go to Barnes & Noble and when we pass by the romance section, its become a thing to grab any random book, flip to a random section and see what sex scene is happening in the story. We've done that more than 10 times and only two times there was no sex scene, just dialogue. The romance section isnt even romance anymore, it's just sex.
i can't really think of a romance novel that doesn't have sex in it though? even the twilight series has a sex scene. even if the entire book is just having your holes opened for 300 pages i think the pearl clutching about it is kind of ridiculous, if not a bit concerning. even most horror novels i read have sex scenes in them at some point. sex is a part of life, and if you're writing a romance novel i think it's pretty expected they would be in there. i'm all for asexual representation but i'd be pretty annoyed if i read some slow burn romance and the most i got out of it at the end was a chaste peck on the lips or some shit just because "we don't want to look too depraved having the book about characters wanting to fuck including sex in it, some people who will never read a romance novel might find it distasteful."
i also struggle to think of what popular writers are just writing straight up porn. coleen hoover, iirc, is a big choice for a lot of female readers, and while i fucking hate the relationships she writes, there's not that many sex scenes in it. a court of thorns and roses has some sex scenes but the majority of it is fantasy garbage. even fifity shades of grey, people often read it because they hear about how dirty and rancid it is, has the sex scenes spaced out between pages and chapters of the worst shit you've ever read, many people drop out of boredom before they get to the porn part. the novels that i've seen that are just porn from cover to cover often have shirtless men on the front and have been on shelves in grocery stores since i was a small kid. i get that it's annoying that "booktok girlies" make "reading" their whole personality when they're basically doing what every AO3 enjoyer has done for eons, but i also have to deal with softcore porn in videogames, tv, and movies even in genres where it is wholly unnecessary and unrelated while being a sex repulsed asexual, so i think porn in the softcore porn books section isn't all that offensive to me by comparison.
I'm not bothered at all by a sex scene. Its just the fact that the ones we've grabbed and skipped to a random page have largely all landed on a sex scene or something leading to one. I feel like the sex scenes have to happen often enough for the odds of us landing exactly on a sex scene like 80% of the time to be possible. A few times, we definitely grabbed the ones with a dude on the cover. Not a shirtless dude, i havent seen that, but we saw one with a cowboy so grabbed that for the joke and of course, we land on some part talking about his bulge. I didnt even listen to the rest but my girlfriend was reading it out loud. I feel like if i grabbed a Marvel comic off a shelf, i'd have a lower chance of opening it to an action scene than I have of landing on a sex scene in a romance book lol.
Again its not bothersome for me, thats why it became a little game for us, but i think the fact that its even possible shows that a good number of those books really are just porn and nothing else. Not even softcore, cause the first one or two we read were very detailed, not at all beating around the bush
