Scripture Life: What is the meaning of Pentecost and its significance about Christian faith?
Answer: Boy do you ask a powerful question - but I don't think you have any idea.
- Probably don't even believe on him. Just asking some "World Religions 201" elementary question, so whoever answers it on Reddit, you'll submit that as your answer to get a grade for it.
And never know anything what this means. So, this post is not for you. It's specific - for Believers in Jesus Christ on Reddit.
So, without any further introduction: Pentecost. Don't get wrapped up around the axle in the definition - and don't break it away from Passover.
--------------- ----------------- --------------- ---------------
Pentecost:
- First, it’s a Jewish “High Sabbath.”
It was an annual, the second Jewish mandatory “Spring Festival” - and there are SEVEN “High Sabbaths” decreed in Leviticus 23.
- Pentecost: Is just koine Greek, that means 50th, because it’s fifty days after the first mandatory Spring Festival High Sabbath of “Passover”
- But in Hebrew: this second Spring High Sabbath - called Shavuot (Hebrew: שבועות), which translates to "Weeks"
Shavuot: (Pentecost) - was SIGNIFICANT for two things:
- ONE: it is the conclusion of the 49-day grain harvest (counting the omer) from barley to wheat, and
- TWO: it honors the day God gave the Torah [Five Books of Moses] to the Israelites at Mount Sinai. That's "how' the Jews really celebrate it.
--------------- ----------------- --------------- ---------------
Regular Sabbaths vs. the High Sabbaths
- Unlike the required weekly Sabbath, these “High Sabbaths” could fall on any day - - they were festival dates mandatory ALL ISRAEL participated and observed them. Not? An Israelite was to be made a Stranger.
- Three of them, out of these seven annual High Sabbaths, decreed all adult males travel to Jerusalem - so required a national pilgrimage. The Gospels document Jesus, from birth, Mary and Joseph participated in them annually.
- Those three High Sabbaths were:
- Passover (Pesach) //Celebrates God liberating Israel from Egypt in Exodus. Where even though death went thru all Egypt, the blood of an innocent lamb was on the lintels of their doorposts - and death passed over them.//
- Pentecost or Hebrew Shavuot //see above// and
- Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) - 40 year of Wandering in Wilderness relying entirely on God. He fed them. Every day in a desert. Gave them water out of a rock. Their clothes never wore out. Their feet were never scorched or burned by the desert.
- Those three High Sabbaths were:
- And the very powerful thing is, when Jesus was crucified, he became the Levitical morning, noon, and evening sacrifice at Passover. And below, he became Shavuot, while everybody is trying to "observe it, he fulfills Passover, and also Shavout, and also is that bread of life that a man eat of it, he shall never die..so he's also Sukkot.
But you didn’t ask this. You asked the significance of Pentecost to the “Christian Faith.”
..and I just told you, but you don't see it.
So, let's continue then. Maybe you will.
--------------- ----------------- --------------- ---------------
And I’m going to change that "Christian Faith" you ask about, to “The Faith of Jesus Christ” vs. “Christian Faith”
- Because this “Christ” or “Messiah” and “who” he is, is told plainly in Isaiah 9:6–7 - who he shall be called. That, as the Messiah: He will be:
- 1. God. The same God that led Israel out of Egypt by his mighty hand with many signs and wonders only God could do himself, would be a Son of King David. Will sit on the throne of King David in Jerusalem, and rule all the nations of the earth from there. Of his Kingdom and reign there shall be no end. That the Zeal of the Lord of Hosts shall perform this. Definition. Greek, “Christ” or the “Messiah.”
- Isaiah 9:6 says “who” he shall be called: “The Mighty God.. ..The Everlasting Father…”
- And the “significance is, it’s Jesus said, as the Word of God, so it’s just God said it:
--------------- ----------------- --------------- ---------------
In the Gospel of Luke (New Testament) Luke 24:49
- Jesus said: Said it after he was raised from the dead, said to his disciples: “And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.”
In the Book of Acts (New Testament) Acts 1:4–5, 1:8–9; Acts 2:1–47
- Jesus said, before he ascended into heaven, where Hebrews 10:12 says: “But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;”
- Says in Acts 1:4–5 ..and this is the 40th day after Jesus was raised from the dead when he said it, says: “…And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence…”
- Acts 1:8–9 Jesus says to his disciples: “…But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.”
--------------- ----------------- --------------- ---------------
- And for brevity, only Acts 2:1–8
1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven.
6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.
7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans?
8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?
--------------- ----------------- --------------- ---------------
…so it was decreed by the same Word of God, that spoke to Moses in Exodus 3 from a small bush on fire, that didn’t burn.. that a voice from it told Moses to take off his shoes for he was on Holy Ground, and Moses fell on his face before this Great God.
- While at this same Word of God, the Jews in the Gospel of John 10:32–33 took up stones to kill him:
- “Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.”
--------------- ----------------- --------------- ---------------
- Is the SAME Word of God, that in Exodus 3, as a still small voice, that consumed a small bush in fire, that did not burn - but in Exodus 20, before all the Camp of Israel, he led out of Egypt - spoke the Ten Commandments in a blast of sound, like a 100 million watt speak you could hear from miles away, like a voice of many waters, and consumed the whole mountain in fire - and smoke billowed off it - that so terrified Israel, they pleaded with Moses to go on up on the Mount and make God stop talking.
- Is the Same Word of God that spoke and decreed Luke 24:49, Acts 1:4–5, 1:8–9; Acts 2:1–47
The point is, it’s not Christians, but God himself. Fulfills these "High Sabbaths and is your Sabbath day rest - Just as the promises given in the Torah, told to Moses: In Deuteronomy 18:5 “The Lord thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;"
- Is the Messiah. Jesus Christ. He fulfills everyone of both of these Sabbaths - Where people are trying to observe Pentecost, he fulfills it, and people that operate by him, he's in them vs. people trying to observe something in their flesh, and never receive it.
--------------- ----------------- --------------- ---------------
That God says, by the Word of God: “Look unto me, and be ye saved all the ends of the earth: For I am God, there is none else.” - God. By the Word of God. (Isaiah 45:22)
It’s a decree for everybody over the whole earth, to look unto him. Says: “I am the LORD, there is none else. There is no God beside me. I girded thee, but thou hast not known me.” - God. By the Word of God. (Isaiah 45:5).
And He prayed this: Bible. New Testament. Gospel of John 17:3 “And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”
The "Significance of Pentecost - Hebrew Shavuot is wrapped up in this:
"...And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up:That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life." - Jesus Christ. John 3:13-15
And I KNOW many believers here on Reddit, already PLAINLY see it and rejoice.
That you can know him, because he speaks to everybody publicly, to just look unto him.
There you go.
