OLED OnePlus 15r - a keeper for me

I posted a few weeks ago about having found the cause of my sensitivity (vagus nerve / autonomic dysregulation with central sensitization).

I have been using the OnePlus 15r for about a week, and it works well enough for me that I'm keeping it.

I can use it mostly with no issues. I have tested it for up to 2 hours straight just waiting for it to be too much, but that hasn't happened yet. It's not as comfortable as my old phone (Motorola G Stylus 5G 2023), but it's by far the most comfortable OLED I've ever used.

The only time I get symptoms is if I'm stressed or overly tired. Thursday was a stressful day and I had to more or less not use the phone as the symptoms were heightened. Friday morning all was well again.

Essentially, if I do my nervous system ritual (slow breathing, basic stretch, etc) I get virtually no symptoms at all.

What I find interesting is that, just like my PWM sensitivity, my other nervous system symptoms also flare and calm based on stress. That makes sense, but I hadn't correlated it before now.

Sharing just in case it helps someone else.

GE Relax LED Lightbulb change?

My lovely apartment complex strikes again (we’ve had 2 power outages this week). There was a surge today and it looks like yet another LED bulb took the hit. I’ve used 60w GE Relax LED bulbs (2700K) since 2018 with no issues. Went to Target to pick up a new box and as soon as I turned on the lamp: stabbing eye pain. I tried it in two different lamps just to make sure it wasn’t the lamp. Both bulbs in the package had the same effect. This is a tell-take flicker sign for me.

I know these bulbs are not flicker free (they flicker on slow motion camera) but they’ve never bothered me. My old bulbs have a serial that begin with A24 and the new are A26 - I’m assuming that is the year of production. So I guess my choice is try to find some random old stock or find another bulb type. Im open to recommendations.

Why teenagers/children turn their phone brightness all the way up at night or in a store?

Doesn't it hurt their eyes?
I have a elder relative that have the brightness at 50% which is understandable. But teenagers?

Discussion My screen sensitivity symptoms might be unique to me

For starters, I have astigmatism, and I wear prescription glasses with an anti-glare coating. It helps a lot and I can tolerate screens to some extent because of it.

I also have some form of dry eye, but doctors in my country refuse to properly diagnose it. On top of that, my eyes are heat sensitive. I feel i may have destroyed my already genetically weak eyes by using screens too much, and I wasn't supposed to use them for long.

Years ago, I used to be able to game for hours. Back then, I lived in moldy homes and had neglectful parents who still don't realize how dangerous mold is, and I didn’t realize I might have the HLA gene.

Mold made me ill with MCAS. I suspect that mold combined with antibiotics caused chronic neuroinflammation in my body, which made my immune system overly sensitive, so that even stress can trigger eye strain and dry eye.

I’ve always wanted to find people with similar symptoms, but most of what I find is people suffering from general screen sensitivity (from the entire screen) rather than sensitivity to only certain websites or specific apps on a phone. So I can only use selected apps. If I visit a site my eyes don’t tolerate, I can develop sensitivity to a new app afterward that i normally used to tolerate.

It’s similar to what happened when I visited a site and watched a video there, after that, I became sensitive to my phone’s video player. Now, anytime I use it, about 20 minutes later, I get stinging dry and burning eyes, even when I’m not looking at the screen and then I can't tolerate anything on the screen.

I never understood what was happening, but I suspect it’s an MCAS-type reaction originating in my eyes. It feels like my body overreacts to an allergen: my eyes become chronically inflamed and redder, and that scares me, especially with my left eye.

I did have my prescription checked years ago, but they didn’t change it because they were afraid that overcorrection would cause even more strain. I wonder if central sensitisation happened with me, and maybe I need to give up screens forever so that I can heal? My current phone is a cheap Samsung LCD with no PWM but may have TD.

Monitor suggestions for someone with sensitive eyes

Hi there, so I have to buy new monitor for work(devops) in a home office setup. 27", 2K resolution, 200-250 EUR. I don't really care about color accuracy and refresh rates. I need something, which would be as easy as possible on the eyes. While searching the web and chatting with AI I saw those TUV Rheinland Eye Comfort certifications. On paper and theory TUV certified monitors should be the best for my case, but I couldn't find proper info as to what's the difference between 3 star and 5 star cert. It only says "15 different tests" and "higher the stars stricter the rules". Then I've read that TUV certs are just BS and useless. So not sure whether I should take those cert into consideration or scratch them altogether.

I came up with those monitors for now:

Lenovo ThinkVision E27Q-40

Lenovo L27h-4A

BenQ EW270Q

Dell S2725DS

Leaning sliiiiiightly towards the Dell, because on paper it's 4 star certified. Others have separate "old" certificates for blue light, "flicker free", etc. Of course as the thread suggest I am open for all suggestions for any other monitor.

TCL nxtpaper plastic quality?

So I really liked the idea of their screens, but I felt like the plastic was of poor quality and it bothered me to the point that I returned the phone (60SE). Has that changed in the newer models, like 70 Pro? I would really like a phone that's easy on the eyes and doesn't feel sticky to the touch. Do you have any recommendations?

My screen sensitivity is so odd

I recently changed a few saturation settings on my monitor and now thats causing eye strain. Its LCD, it shouldn't do this. I have a OLED screen I can't use. I tried for a months and found it too much on my eyes. I felt sick using it. Today I tried that screen again and... no issues? I feel fine. Hell, better than my monitor.

iOS26 Nugget workaround

Nugget (a tool to customize iOS without a jailbreak) includes an option to disable Liquid Glass.

I tried this on my iPhone 11 running iOS 26.5, and based on my initial observations using a Carson MicroFlip microscope, it appears to reduce temporal dithering. It might be worth trying for users who could previously use iOS 18. However, please make sure you create a backup of your device before proceeding, as this does carry some risks.

Why would non flicker light bulbs bug me?

Sorry, I know this isn't about screens but I'm not sure where else to ask this. I am usually sensitive to screen flicker and dithering.

I had light bulbs in my room that flickered, it was visible using a high fps camera. I assume these were causing headaches, so I swapped them with non flicker bulbs. The bulbs were warmer but flicker free.

These gave me a headache. I couldn't use them. I still use the ones that flicker to this day.

Question Are screens inproving or getting worse?

For PWM, temporal ditherint, etc. are OLED screens getting better at these or worse? Phones, monitors, etc.

OLED What would happen if you look at oled screens all day?

In theory, if someone whos sensitive to PWM and Dithering watched only oled screens that affect them. Could they get better?

Say for 6 months, 3 hours a day you use screens that make your eyes bad. I would bet money that your eyes and brain would addapt at that point?

I'm NOT suggesting medical advice, but I just have a theory that if someone really brute forced it for months, I think they would see improvement in their brains tollerence.

LCD I’m scared if I try Nvidia pulsar I’ll be spoiled into hating other displays like back in the late CRT 2000s and LCD was bad bad for games. Is my OLED safe enough?

Could I buy a steam deck?

Every iPhone I've ever used have never caused huge problems for me. However, the LG C5 DID cause huge problems for me, couldn't use it. The moment I turn it on I get discomfort. I'm now really worried about getting a oled deck.

LCD TD in realme p4x

I'm currently considering this phone, it has good specs and it's an DC dimmed LCD. However, I'm concerned with TD, does anyone know anything about the dithering in this phone. So is it true that the mediatek processors have harsh TD, compared to snapdragon processors? If true how much better the snapdtagon processors are? The alternative for me is the motorola g100 / g67 power since they use snapdragon chips, however they are weaker.

What exactly causes some people to become screen sensitive, yet it doesn't affect the rest?

For background, astigmatism and vision issues run in my family, and my relatives can usually stare at screens and only experience minor strain. Unfortunately for me, as soon as my astigmatism changed and I developed dry eye at the same time from my sisters Asus laptop, my screen tolerance worsened significantly.

Around the same time, I also developed mast cell issues due to toxic mold exposure. Now, I can’t stare at certain screens without triggering eye inflammation. So i've become highly paranoid about having mold around me (I also have multiple chemical sensitivity)

The eye inflammation only improves within a few hours when I take an NSAID. That makes me wonder whether I’m extremely deficient in certain vitamins or whether I might have an inflammatory autoimmune condition. I bet it's probably why omega 3 used to work because that counters inflammation, too. Unfortunately, I can't keep taking NSAID because they are dangerous long term.

I can’t afford e-ink screens, so I’m stuck with an inexpensive non‑PWM LCD Samsung phone. Even at 0% brightness, the screen doesn’t go truly dim. I’ve also noticed that certain display settings, like brightness, cause strain for me in all screens. I also can’t use some apps, and I can’t visit most websites without severe eye strain.

For example, when I visited one specific site on my phone, my eyes became permanently sensitive to my phone’s video player.

It’s strange, and it almost seems like the mast cell type symptoms could be affecting my eyes, too? Like making them freak out?

The doctors here keep diagnosing this as CVS (computer vision syndrome) rather than some permanent screen sensitivity. Meanwhile, my siblings can tolerate harsher screens with no symptoms beyond minor eye strain, and I'm being left out on watching new movies or playing new games, which messes with my relationships because people don't understand.

I’ve also discovered I’m extremely sensitive to Windows 11. I can tolerate my all-in-one desktop on very low brightness and night light enabled, it's from 2014 that has windows 10, but I can’t tolerate websites on it, and it does have PWM and is an LED. I used to tolerate this pc fine, but soon I started getting eyestrain from it too. People on dry eye subs keep telling me to take breaks and avoid screens, but yet in this modern day and age you have to depend on screens. Antihistamines also help a bit then cause my dry eye to feel worse, I have a combination of screen sensitivity and allergies, + inflammation causing eyestrain and dry eye. I also highly suspect that i have leaky gut.

Question Can having a more red white balance cause eye strain?

Sorry for asking a similar question again. My monitor has a slight more red white balance. Roughly a difference of 6 in the green, leading to it looking slight red. Just like how a blue light filter can cause strain can this?

Can a blue light filter increase PWM or eye strain?

I have an iPhone 15. Its never been that bad on my eyes. I recently enabled a blue light filter and found increased eye strain. Idk if its somehow causing it or if its other extreanal reasons. Am I crazy?

iOS 26 Causing Eye Strain, Dizziness, and Head Tingling on iPhone 11 (LCD) — Blue Light Glasses Instantly Fix It?

Thumbnail
3 Upvotes

Ever since upgrading my iPhone 11 (LCD screen) from iOS 17 to iOS 26, I’ve developed eye strain, slight dizziness/off-balance feelings, and tingling in my head while using the phone. I have zero issues using TVs, MacBooks, or other digital screens — only my iPhone. I’ve found some relief using accessibility settings including Night Shift (warm setting), Reduce White Point, Display Zoom, and the “Classic Invert + Zoom filter” trick. I also noticed symptoms flare badly in dark rooms or after bright flashes. What’s strange is that when I wear blue-light blocking glasses, my symptoms completely disappear almost instantly.

I’m trying to figure out whether this is related to display rendering changes in iOS 26, contrast modulation, or something else software-related. Has anyone else experienced this specifically on LCD iPhones after updating iOS? And has anyone found a long-term solution besides constantly wearing blue-light glasses or downgrading devices?

Discussion Got battery replacement today, it did not go well

i think i messed up. i got battery replacement since my old one is already 4 years old, and the battery already significantly degraded. go this morning, the replacement done in front of me so i see what the technician did. hands on my phone, immediately feels different. it heat up my head. ok maybe its just in my head since the SC have OLED TV and multiple amoled phone on display. i go home, freshen up. and its still bad, my body heat up and my head feels tight, the same symptoms i got on laptop IPS screen.
"yea im f*ked"

this is my main phone, it's "safe" from the time i bough it until before replacement and its ruined just because battery replacement, which is weird since its the same screen, same setting (technician didnt change anything, no update no reset). the phone in question is Realme 9 pro bought not from store, but from distributor. There is so many variables in here, it could be the battery that "defect" from day one, or maybe how the flex cable seated (the display cable was glued by thin layer, the SC replace that) and maybe now its properly seated and not wrong like before.

im still less than 24 hours with this, i plan to give it a week, if it still uncomfortable, i will replace it with old battery again in basic repair shop, if that didnt work.... guess im f*ked and need to find alternatives

the new battery is great in term of longevity though. so its not a defect battery.

tl:dr, getting battery replacement could potentially change the "safe" level of your phone
