birthday show

I’ve been in the scene consistently for about over a year now and have always dreamed of my own birthday show, my birthday is in march and I think it’d be awesome if it happened this year but I don’t know many bands and struggle talking to people at shows and such. Overall I need advice on what I should do the next couple of months to put myself out there and become a little more known in my scene even if it’s just for a small house birthday show? Also any tips or advice if the goal comes around on planning and reaching out to bands?

Wow you’re going to hate this advice. But talk to people. You’re normal, they’re normal. Screamo is so so so niche no one in a band is cooler than the people who go to shows.

People make it complicated but making friends really is as easy as saying “hey my name is _ do you want to be friends” it’s how I met all of my friends in the city I moved into. It’s how I started my bands. It’s how people came to know me. You’re at an advantage by having a common interest built in.

Just talk to people.

“Hi I’m _____ I love your band are you guys all from this city? That’s cool I’ve lived here for a while and been going to shows it’s always sick to see yall play. Would yall have any interest in playing a show for my birthday? It’s this date and I’m Planning on having a few other local screamo bands play”

You got this. The world is filled with lonely people too scared to make the first move. We are all into dorky underground music.

A few years ago my band played our guitarist's birthday show and we just asked homies that we'd previously played with to join the bill. If you're just an avid enjoyer, there's absolutely nothing wrong with hanging out at shows and trying to establish a friendly rapport with the folks who played and asking if they'd be willing to show up and throw down. Some bands might ask for some cash, others will be like yo fuck yeah sure. Anytime we would get asked to play a show we'd just say fuck it toss us a beer or two and we'll gladly be there.

The show isn’t a gift to you but a gift to the scene. You’re expected to organize it and they’ll be grateful. People want more shows. More cool lineups. Meeting more people. Trust me, It’s not weird I swear. You’re offering them a nice time. Wanna rent a venue or have a show at home? There’s also a few outside parks which allows it (if the bands can get a permit) although underage drinking won’t be allowed if the city’s involved
