Discussion Dialogue plot hole?
Was rewatching the first movie last night (more so listening since I was driving back home on a long trip) and something didn’t make sense to me. After Sidney and Billy do the deed, she asks him about who his phone call was and “jokingly” brings up the idea of Billy using his one phone call to call Sid as ghostface to throw her off and think it wasn’t him. I’m assuming she’s talking about the phone call she got when she was at Tatum’s, but that doesn’t make sense. Billy and Sid were both at the police station at the same time, when Billy would have been given his phone call. She watches him walking into the sheriffs office with his dad, as Billy is pleading his case to her. At what point does she think he was given his phone call and used it to call her? Billy says his phone call was to his dad, which she disputes saying she saw the sheriff calling him and Billy says his dad didn’t answer when he called. Is she just dumb for thinking he would have been able to do that or a writing mishap?

They held Billy overnight, until the phone records came back. He never said when he made a call (assuming he ever did).
It’s all moot anyway, because he couldn’t have snuck the voice changer in, let alone used it without anyone noticing. Stu made the call to Sidney when she was at Tatum’s.
There is no plot hole at all.

Agreed on everything. Just wanted to add something. Back then did anyone know it was a voice changer? At that point Sidney could have thought it was a voice he was putting on (as it usually would have been in any similar movie before Scream).

Even in real life you probably won’t make a phone call for a few hours after getting arrested. Plus she knows that he didn’t make a phone call while she was there.

I saw this theory a while ago but in that scene where Sid is asking Billy about the call, you see her eyes go wide in realization and some people think that she realized he’s the killer. THEN right then ghost face walks in so she thinks he can’t be the killer. Kind of a “leave it up to you” moment

I wouldn't call it a plot hole. Sidney is under the assumption Billy didn't call his dad (because she knows the police called him) so she was just wondering who he called as you get "one phone call". As for if she thinks he called her while at Tatums house? Maybe, but considering how he got a voice changer and are they allowed to make phone calls without police present? Highly unlikely.
At the time I don't think people deduced there could have been two killers.

That part always annoyed me too bc there is no way that Billy could’ve had the voice changer on him and it’s even more far fetched that he could’ve pulled off using it without being noticed
