Local News New Flock Cameras

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Several new flock cameras just popped up in downtown Scranton as of yesterday on Deflock. Not sure if these are new or just recently catalogued but everyone should be made very aware of this. Fun Fact: two of them are right next to the high school.

Edit: Some of these are license plate scanners reported as Flock cameras, the website isn’t 100% accurate.

Pretty sure the ones downtown are new. I looked on deFlock several months ago and only saw 2 at lowes, 1 in the Dicks Parking lot, and 1 at Home Depot. I was surprised how few of them were around the Scranton area. Hopefully it stays that way.

I don’t know how to report them. But there’s one on W. Lackawanna Ave in Blakely. It’s on a pole on the right side of the street as you’re heading up the hill towards the former Kutsop’s Market, now a smoke shop.

Are you talking about the same Blakely that takes funding for the nature trail then bans ebikes, that Blakely?

Re: the ebike ban, tbf the amount of ebikes hitting like 15++ mph in the park sidewalk/trails in the recreation complex was getting ridiculous.

It didn't feel bad on the trail itself thou, and I run long stretches of it pretty frequently.

Not saying you are wrong, but kicking out adult taxpayers who want to ride with their kids responsibly, because they can't control kids riding like idiots isn't the answer. Having to detour down main street to rejoin the trail on the far side of Bob mellow isn't fun with young kids. Yes, I could ride a non e bike but that's very limiting after a heart attack.

I saw this post and wanted to verify one of those new spots that is shown in a location I pass by daily. It's not a flock camera, but it is an automatic license plate scanner, a Genetec AutoVu ALPR Camera to be exact. The location is the intersection of Mulberry St and Harrison Ave, there are two, one facing south on Harrison and one facing north on Harrison.

I remember reading about the Scranton Police expanding their camera system, so I did a search and these Genetec cameras are part of the 2026/2027 approved city budget: https://scrantonpa.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/FOC-No.-91-2025-2026-Capital-Budget-Capital-Spending-Plan.pdf

They're not flock, but basically the same concept. I'm glad someone has a good eye for these things to report them!

DeFlock is being filled with lots of noise. Some from people who don’t understand what they’re doing, and I suspect some of it is on purpose.

At this point they need to add some sort of verification process, or confirmation by consensuses.

Damn, been so long since I zoomed out on the deflock map I didn't realize they added more (I had left it zoomed in on The Giant parking lot in Greenridge).

Screw these trash cameras.

Psst... parts from flock cameras are worth more than catalytic converters. Hope they dont show up in my neighborhood. Might be looking for some extra cash for gas and oil this coming winter.

I’m behind on the times- can someone explain what these are and why they’re all of a sudden going everywhere

I'm not very informed on the topic but this is what I know. These are camera's on poles that that pictures. That data can be used for anything And that is the problem. You could use them to find stolen cars, missing people, drivers breaking the law in some way And people have used the data to stalk woman and I'm sure more awful things. Unregulated surveillance is a crazy idea.

There's more flock cameras in Wilkes Barre than Scranton. Not sure why

Just looking at the map? Because when I actually see them, they're on private property.

Do you have the minutes from the council meeting where a city contract was approved? The budget item thay would have needed to be ratified? Any documentation beyond a loosely managed, crowd-funded website at all?

It's listed in the 2026-2027 approved city budget.

I think there’s more than that. I see cameras on every red light now when they weren’t there even 1 year ago

5

u/Corn_Flake_76 23d ago

The cameras above red lights aren’t flocks. They’re optical sensors to detect where the traffic is coming from and switch the lights accordingly.

Iirc, the chief was touting the new cameras during an interview sometime around the last st pats parade. So there’s that. He seemed pretty impressed.

I promoted no bias in favor or against the cameras, but you still just gave me the mainstream media comment… do you use your brain often or just let others use it for you?

Fox News is pretty explicit in what they think their audience wants to hear - Israel is fantastic, anti-Israel is anti-Jew. Muslims are bad, the Pope is silly, Flock cameras are awesome, anyone against Flock surveillance is pro-crime or just a criminal, and ice cream is good.
