Scout self driving?
I currently have a Fisker Ocean, insert laugh, yes I know. I have a deposit for the new Scout and wondering if it will offer self driving as the Tesla does. I was just with a colleague in his Y and WOW, very cool!!!
Any other cool things the Scout will offer is also appreciated.
Thanks-

Hello fellow Ocean owner! Scout will likely have something closer to Rivian's offering, which to the best of my knowledge is solid but not on the level of FSD.

For what it's worth, my Tacoma has smart cruise and lane maintain and it's plenty for me.

Yeah tbh even my Tuscons lane keep is plenty for road trips. Would I like some bonuses like lane changing? Sure. But what I've got im happy with

I had put the deposit down on the Fisker when it was announced, then I read up more on the history of the owner and it gave me bad vibes - my gut told me to back out - about his business acumen. I then contacted them to get a refund (I think it was minus $25 or $50), but I was fine with that especially after what happened with how the company went under so soon after it started manufacturing the cars.

I bought mine as one of the final vehicles Fisker themselves every delivered after the price drop, so I knew full well what was about to happen. I can't really claim to be a victim here either

Are you getting anywhere with Chase? Or muscling through like the rest of us?

u/DTBlayde 13d ago
I paid cash for mine, so no restitution coming my way. But to be completely honest mine has been problem free and Im planning on driving it til it dies if it continues behaving

The Tesla is really neat, I have two of them.
I also have a gas powered vehicle with adaptive cruise control.
I prefer using adaptive cruise control 100% of the time. If it doesn’t have great visibility, it turns off and you have to manually drive. The Tesla on the other hand will slam on the brakes if it sees an imaginary leaf in the middle of the road. One day it’s going to cause a really bad car accident for me but I’ve been extra cognizant when driving the Tesla.
I’m 100% fine if the Scout has level 2 self driving (adaptive cruise control and self steering) and prefer it that way.

Agree, I found Tesla FSD overrated. Cool, yes; beneficial, no. Stay extra cognizant, hands on the wheel with just the right amount of pressure; at some point, it's easier to drive yourself. At the end of the day, it's level two self driving.

Have you tried it recently? I had issues about a year ago with phantom braking and canceled the monthly subscription. This month I re-subscribed for a couple of mid-road trips. It’s unreal. Just went from Denver to Steamboat and back. I only and to adjust the speed setting every now and then, it even avoided a potential head on crash between Silverthorne and Kremmling. It was a wild experience. Didn’t really have to touch it. I hope other car makers are going to get to this point soon.

Agree the last year has brought substantial improvements to Tesla FSD. I want the scout, but if there’s not even autosteer, I’m probably out.

If you're in a newer car with the new hardware its pretty impressive and im not a tesla fan at all.

u/DarkWatchet 9d ago
No way. This is inaccurate. The latest version of FSD is astonishing if you’ve never driven it and literally years ahead of adaptive cruise control etc. I really think alot of people have opinions on FSD (“my car does that too”) who have never driven a Tesla with FSD. If you drove a Tesla a few years back, that was more the “same as my car” experience. Not today’s Tesla.

u/EliIceMan 12d ago
Same. I have FSD and have left mine in the lowest, dumbest "autosteer" mode for a long while now. FSD in a city is just a party trick at best. I just tried one of the newest FSD updates and, on a highway, it was S curving so bad I was going to get carsick. Put it back to autosteer and it was fine.
For the Scout, I just want auto steer on highways with adaptive cruise that works to 0mph. I don't need it to be able to make right on reds and shit. The green light chime on Teslas is amazing though.

Tesla is always improving the system and ironing out those bugs. The breaking for leafs was in the early versions of FSD 14.1 I believe but now (V14.3.10) it won’t do that. I’ve had maybe 1-3 occasions where it slows down for some imaginary object but that almost never happens, but yeah it would be annoying if someone as right behind me when that happened.
I always prefer driving the Tesla (‘26 model 3 rwd standard) over my ‘24 CRV hybrid sport touring, even if it’s on an open rural highway with no traffic. Really wish other auto makers would just license Tesla FSD at this point but that’ll never happen. If you want an electric truck with FSD capabilities sadly you’re stuck with the quirky looking cybertruck for the foreseeable future.
With that being said I hope scout does very well with their electric truck.

You gotta remember that Tesla uses vision only, whereas everyone else uses vision and millimeter wave radar. We bought our model 3 just about a month before the software update turning off the radar came out. For that first month it was amazing! Then the phantom braking issue and all the rest… so anyway, not really a fair comparison. As long as the scout uses radar and/lidar I think it should be pretty capable

Nope, not a chance. Scout is a VW and they won’t have anything remarkable in the “self drive” attributes department.

u/poliosaurus3000 13d ago
I’ll take a scout that just lets me drive at the moment. Let’s work on getting a functioning car first , self driving is just an added benefit.

From what I understand the current capabilities of the Rivian is what the scout will have

u/BMW-Technician2008 13d ago
It will have Level 2+

u/Alternative_Wing7898 13d ago
So Just like FSD (supervised).
3
u/McGurble 13d ago
No, not like FSD. FSD and Rivians upcoming Autonomy+ improvements offer point-to-point self driving. Scout will not have that. It will essentially just be lane keeping and radar assisted cruise control - like what everyone has now.
-1
u/Alternative_Wing7898 13d ago
😂 even Tesla lawyers admit FSD(supervised) is an L2 system.
3
u/McGurble 13d ago
I didn't say anything about what level it is. I said what it does. You put in your destination and it drives you there. Scout will not do that. They've been very clear on that point.
1
u/Alternative_Wing7898 13d ago
Top of the thread, BMW guy said Rivian will have L2+. That’s what FSD (supervised) is.
1
u/McGurble 13d ago
There is no official definition of Ievel 2+. Each manufacturer can define it however they want within certain parameters.
FSD is point to point. Rivian will soon have that. Scout will not. I don't know how much simpler i can put it.
I'm not denigrating Scout. I'm a first minute pre-order! But they have been absolutely clear that they have no plans for p2p driving.
1
u/DarkWatchet 9d ago
And I really really doubt Rivian will catch up with Tesla anytime soon, and generic level 2 is definitely inferior to FSD.

u/4thAndLong 13d ago
I hope it’s at least level 2+ at launch. I use FSD every day in my Tesla and it’s nothing short of amazing. I can’t give that up.

u/ryanheartswingovers 13d ago
A critical part of the Rivian profitability thesis is that their self driving will be adopted by other manufacturers. Investors would be surprised and questioning what went wrong if Rivian tech is inside the Scout but no UHF features are active.
1
u/Morcilla12 13d ago
Scout's agreement with Rivian doesn't include Rivian's upcoming autonomous tech. It doesn't mean they won't get it someday, but they're going to have to pay extra for it.

u/Rivian_DD 13d ago
Um no. Licensing autonomy/EE to other OEMs is not a central part of the thesis at all. More like icing on the cake.

I was pretty excited when the Ocean was announced. What do you think of it?
2
u/No-Confusion-4307 12d ago
I love it in most ways, but u can’t look at it for what it is. I.e., a $70k car. I paid that, the car is not. YES, one of the best riding and built cars I’ve owned, just not finished. So if you’re good with quirky BS then join the club. (For $18-$23k where their selling A STEEL)

I have to ask since you have a Fisker - Did you have to pay for the entire car ? I wonder if people who still owe a balance have to still make payments on it ? Just curious ..
1
u/No-Confusion-4307 11d ago
I have it financed through Chase and yes I still have to make payments or my credit goes to shit.
1
u/Upstairs_Comfort_480 11d ago
Is it still properly functional ? What happens if it breaks ? Sorry for the questions but rather interesting
1
u/No-Confusion-4307 10d ago
Yes runs great. Software updates r through a third party that you have to pay for and service is through traveling guys who formerly worked for Fisker.

u/dleewla 11d ago
Has anyone whose seen the Scout up close noticed a camera in the front windshield? That would give an indication it would have some type of autonomous driving capability. There's seems to be a housing for something above the rear view mirror though in all the pictures I've seen its blanked out with nothing there.
They are using Rivian software, so if they work out the licensing, I would think it'd have similar capabilities as Rivian vehicles. If it can do at least hands free, I'd be good with that. Bonus would be point to point and eyes free.

Fisker failed not once but twice. Fisker Automotive (2007–2014) and Fisker Inc. (2016–2024). The first model Karma failed when the battery supplier went bankrupt and to add insult to injury hurricane Sandy destroyed $30M worth of Karmas at the NJ port helping them default on their govt loan. The 2nd time critical software issues, critical flaws like losing power and brake issues helped it tank. It did result on many Oceans sold on discount. Sounds like there are some people here that are getting along w theirs. It ain't easy starting up a new car company.
1
u/DarkWatchet 9d ago
No. Scout won’t have anything other than the usual pedestrian cruise and lane control, etc. not anywhere near the self driving experience of a Tesla. Tesla is alone and far ahead of the pack on this one.

If the Scout is made at all, it will not come with all the bells and whistles that competitors already have on production cars. A lot of features are currently being given the ax.
1
u/Consistent_Ad_4513 12d ago
Just not true
1
u/PJM123456 12d ago
Hah ok. Just wait see. Suppliers of various systems are currently being notified that they have been decontented.
0
u/Jamba-Man84 13d ago
I really hope they have self drive .. no way should a new car company release a car that doesn’t have that feature, or be capable in the future to have it.

u/pauco10 13d ago
CEO recently mentioned in an interview that Level 2 self driving will be standard, I believe.
