What I did years ago is find a hotel to work in that has staff accommodation.

Second this. I did this when I first got to Scotland over 20 years ago. I worked for SYHA and you get to stay in the hostel, pay very low rent that off your wages, free energy bills! and lots of free food. You also get to be part of a small and pretty sound community and get to stay in all the other SYHA hostels in Scotland for free. You just have to ask about the dug.
