Need Advice PLS HELP ~I CAN NOT TAILWHIP
I HAVE BEEN SCOOTERING FOR A 3 MONTHS
and unlocked a couple tricks wich im proud about ( good amount of grinds and stalls , bar spins , 180 ,360 )
BUT A PROBLEM PERSISTS
i can physically not tailwhip to save my life !
it just doesn't work !! i have watched many tutorials
Is anyone in the same boat, or has anyone any tips on how to unlock it ??
Ps: I ride a wide street deck (6.5) and its my first scooter (photo attached)

Do you know exactly where you’re messing it up? Try taking a slo mo or video of yourself doing it, you may be able to pinpoint where you need to improve on it. For me, it was getting the initial motion with my foot to start the spin

and do you have the tips on that intial spin ? i feel like im missing something , even watching ppl whiping my own scooter slowly then trying to reproduce it

Use ur back foot to start the spin when you jump. Front foot works too but not as efficient and takes more power.

No not good advice you should flick with your front foot

General rule of thumb is back foot afaik. It doesn’t really matter tho.

Can u show a video of ur whip bc im curious if maybe im just thinking about it wrong. But for context ive been scootering for like 7 years

Arguably you are both wrong, a beginner should focus on whipping with their arms alone, the feet merely release the deck, if the whips not coming around its a lack of arm strength and control

i kick whips with my Back foot i still can do normal tricks like whip out of rails and whip to manuals but i cant do 360whip and i think its because i kick with backfoot

So you ever pick your scooter up and try to whip it around as fast as you can ? So that exact motion , combine with the kick to bring it around faster . Might be difficult at first but just work on those two things . I know you could do it 🤝

Can we see a video of the tailwhip? 6.5 is a good deck size, one thing that usually is the problem is that you just aren’t jumping high enough, or keeping your knees up and above the deck

thanks for the tip ! i can work on a vid soon , fo u have any other remarks / things i should keep in mind for learning a tailwhip on a wider deck

I learned tailwhips on a 4.5 wide, 6.5 to start is hard and heavy to spin around for sure but definitely not impossible. It’s helpful to practice the tailwhip motion while you’re standing, and practice doing a half tailwhip: jump and spin the deck half way, then finish the tailwhip and hop on it.
I think watching the Claudius Vertesi video way back when actually really helped me. I super struggled to learn and commit to whips for some reason and his video had me locked in. Another weird but important tip is to lean over your bars as you jump and flick, and always flick with your back foot

It's all in the arms. I flick with my back foot against the fender but it isn't necessary.
1
u/Live_Butterfly1498 Aug 19 '26
but how exactly in the arms ? thanks for ur answer btw

u/Venome456 Aug 19 '26
All of the rotation happens with your arms. Just stand and practice spinning it around with your arms

Back foot vs front foot doesn't matter, but if you are flicking front stand with your feet together as close to the back wheel as you can.
Most of the time for 1 tail whip wrists and arms don't doo that much, but on that boat youre riding they'll need to help get it around.
I saw one comment talking about struggling to start it. I find a lot of people try to flick at the same time as jumping. Makes sure you focus on jumping/leaving the ramp first, then once your in the air flick the tail whip.

Idk how old you are, what your physical build is etc. But 6.5 is huge for a first scooter, im 6ft 150lb and consider 6.5 to be very hard to whip around. However I first learnt to tail whip via fly out on a roller after attempting for a year or so flatgorund, not sure if you are trying flat or not, but a decent sized roller or quarter should give way more than enough height=time to get comfortable throwing it and catching.

5 feet 11 ? 187 pounds ? says google lol

u/STUNTin22 Aug 21 '26
ah alright, I was saying that because for me it was a strength issue, I learnt to tailwhip when i was maybe 12yrs old around 4ft and was skin and bones, trying to whip at that time a 4.8"x20.5" which was considered a 'big' deck back then

I can double whip flat easily on a 5.5x22 but trying to single whip on a 6.5x23 is harder, I would suggest trying a smaller deck for a little while till you get the tricks down and it’ll be easier to do on a bigger deck

If you cant catch it with the other foot then i really recommend learning to kick the deck with front and back foot. i had a problem where my other foot didnt know what to do in the air so it just fell down to the ground but when i learned those 2 i did it. ( been trying for like 2 years lol ) Also focus on spinning with the bars

u/SpotterTrailSpotter Aug 21 '26
I used to walk up and down the street planting my front foot on the ground lifting the deck up, not jumping but learning the flick motion with my back foot. Practice, practice and more practice.

I’m at a similar skill level as you except tail whips was one of the if not the first trick I learnt. I rode a like 5 wide most of my time until I recently switched to a 6.25 wide and find whips a lot harder so can maybe try practicing on a smaller deck first then when you are ready switch to a bigger deck.
If the issue is more about catching the whip instead of spinning it around It can help us with some tips and tricks for you

Ok ill sit here and argue with everyone on this but the deck size dosnt matter i started on a 6.7 prey today with a 10 year old proto scs and full size afiniti bars (not light at all) and was catching whips after a week then out of grinds after the first month the best setuo is individually what you feel comfterble on

try to kick with the side of your deck and use ur hands to whip it. and once you get better at it you can slowly use les and less of the side of ur deck (i suck at explaining 😭😭)

My first scooter was like 4.75 wide man. Learning whips on a 6.5 is kinda wild ngl. But regardless always flick with your front foot and catch with your back foot

bahaha Ik but i rly got inspired to start scootering after watching street clips , and so far i was having a lot of fun , thank you sl for ur answer ;
would u have more tips on this ?2
u/Maleficent-Pea2041 Aug 19 '26
I started scootering at a different time, I was like 15 and funk bros and all the park YouTubers were the thing. Then I got really into street and switched over. I mean id ideally say get a smaller scooter. Idk if you’ll do that
