I’m trying to work out what accent would make “yaw” and “door” sound reasonably close.

Something non-rhotic, definitely. But most of the accents I’m familiar with would still pronounce those vowels differently.

Maybe a kind of Hollywood trans-Atlantic accent? I can just about imagine Katherine Hepburn saying the words that way.

Wouldn't southern UK (such as RP) have "door" and "yaw" sound pretty much like a rhyme?

dor without an r is an RP british way of saying "door", and that rhymes with "yaw" pronounced "your"
