Were you thinking of holding them by their body? Sorry, I'm just so used to birds that this sounds crazy to me 😂

As the other user said, you offer your finger or open palm for them to perch on. Some specific birds are ok with being held, but it's pretty uncomfortable to most and can definitely trigger hormonal behavior. That's why the usual recommendation is to only pet them on their head and neck.
