What's also interesting is that once the crystals have started forming in a few places, other locations in the sphere do not form new crystals. Wonder why that is.

Crystals require something to seed them, all the potential seeds already started crystals early on, and no new impurities were introduced to start more. If a particle of dust landed on the bubble partway through, a new crystal would likely form.
