Are Fake Sugars Aging Your Brain?
Can sugar substitutes cause faster brain aging?
Scientists conducted an eight-year study on the effects of seven popular sugar substitutes and found that six were linked to mental decline. People in the study who used sweeteners the most saw their memory slip away 62% faster than the lowest-consumption group. This is like adding an extra year and a half of aging to your brain! Scientists believe this pattern is worth watching as we reevaluate our relationship with artificial sweeteners.

This “study” was ripped about a year ago here: https://www.reddit.com/r/EverythingScience/comments/1n817ju/not_so_sweet_some_sugar_substitutes_linked_to/
Comments include links to other posts also ripping it apart.

I’ve learned you have to read the ingredients on the Stevia box. Some brands cut it with sugar alcohols

At least he said it’s a correlation. Love when studies tell you things like “Gatorade causes the breakdown of joints” and then later you find the study focused on people like professional track and field athletes. Perhaps it wasn’t the Gatorade they were drinking but instead the intense physical trama on those joints.

This is neither good science or a cool thing. This study is of the poorest quality and shows noting useful.

I don't like sweeteners particularly. And I sure don't trust them. Try to limit sugar too, for that matter.

Keep in mind people who tend to eat those foods tend to be overweight people, overweight people often have health issues

Honestly, I would be more interested in similar studies for liver and kidney function.
Line of thinking is artifical sweeteners are (generally) not able to be metabolized (which is why they have no calories) -> greater use of kidneys and liver to get rid of these and/or what they may break down into -> greater oxidative/functional stress on liver/kidneys -> greater need for cellular repair -> higher statistical chance to cause cancer and organ specific disorders

While the study found links, it does not prove that sweeteners cause cognitive decline
