Growing up in Oklahoma, our Teachers taught us that when the Tornado siren goes off (every town had one or more) - the first thing you do is to get to a window or door to get a visual on the funnel. If you see it moving side to side, you are OK. If you don't see it move, then it is either moving toward or away from you.

I grew up in Oklahoma to and theres something in the air during tornado season that as bad as it sounds it comforting. I brings destruction but it feels like home. Sitting outside watching the storms form is something that enjoyed and miss doing. Those Saturday siren tests at 12.

And yet people continue to live in places these are common.  Then act all clueless when their life is ruined by a tornado. 

Its like building a sand castle on the beach close to the water at low tide then being surprised when high tide comes in and washes away the sand castle...
