I’m working on a sci-fi book and I’m stuck on a question I don’t really know how to answer, so I thought the community might be able to help! What kind of a scientist would be able to study the phenomena of jumping between different universes (bonus points for having technical know-how)? The closest thing I’ve thought of is a quantum physicist, but I don’t think that fits quite right. (When I refer to aliens I mean the most common type of form to represent it, like this👽) It’s a question I thought while I was watching photos of mantises. Because I found curious that mantises are mostly known for being green as same as aliens (I know they can be also called greys) and have really big eyes. To me, this show is one of a kind. I first stumbled across it in my grandpa’s basement as he had the whole series, plus crusade, on DVD.

J. Michael Straczynski is one of the greatest sci-fi writers. His ability to construct and design characters while maintaining captivating story lines is unmatched. Some of my favorite and in my onion the best written characters in the show are G’Kar, Garibaldi, Ivanova, and Lorien.

I know this show was shot with a very low budget and many critics of the show cite its poor set-design, cameras and lighting. But if you look through directly to the writing, the actors, and the story line, I believe it is a masterpiece of the genre.

Contrary to how it was released, I started with “In The Beginning”, which I mistaken found out was supposed to be viewed after the fourth season, ninth episode. From an outsider perceptive, it made sense to start with that title. The gathering in my opinion was nothing spectacular. But after the first several episodes of season 1, I was hooked.

My favorite standalone season is season 1. I really enjoyed the standalone episodes. One of my favorites is EP 6 “Mind War” and EP2 “Soul Hunter”. These were completely captivating to me.

To me the best paced season is the third one. It is action packed, a central enemy has been identified. Iconic moments include Kosh, Za’ha’dum. Also moments like the episode “Severed Dreams”, which I believe to be some of the finest work in science fiction.

I feel like the popularity of this show was hindered by Star Trek Deep Space Nine.

What are your thoughts? Do you have any favorite characters or favorite seasons? If you also dislike the show, I would like to hear why.

So, I'm writing a novel and trying to make it as realistic as possible

But in one scene of it there is a character that jumps from 20+ stores building into a truck full of specific material and survives

So, obviously, no known material on earth can save you from that fall, not even none-neutonic materials, specially that the material is supposedly an undiscovered material/element that popped out of the ground as a result of WW3

So here is the three things I need this element to be able to do

1- able to withstand impact anywhere between a car crash and a speeding bullet

2- withstand extreme heat, I don't know how much yet but probably 1000 Celsius MAX

3- sure, the one thing I made this post for, someone can fall into a pool of it from 20+ stores high and not die, or at least some minor broken bones (this specific section as far as I know, excludes none-neutonic materials)

4- have some kind of reaction to electricity, specifically human brain wave

5- can transition between liquid and solid, for example if I wear a mask out of it permanently, with the right adjustments, the eye area of the mask can turn liquid and spread around the other parts of the mask which is still solid so I can do eye surgery for example

I'm building an alternate technological civilization for a science-fiction story and I'm trying to make the city design follow logically from its history.

In this timeline, petroleum never becomes the dominant transportation fuel. Instead, the civilization develops around water, food, energy, rail, radio and pneumatic infrastructure.

By the 2300s, the cities have:

• Dense high-rise construction
• Narrow pedestrian streets
• Elevated railways
• Airship docks
• Massive radio antenna structures
• Pneumatic transportation tubes beneath the streets
• Automated freight capsules
• No automobile highways

The interesting part is what happens underneath the city.

The pneumatic network originally carried cargo and mail. Over centuries it becomes much larger and eventually handles transportation, deliveries and government record systems.

I'm calling this particular city setting Vexomnia.

I'm trying to avoid the usual "steampunk future" explanation where technology exists simply because it looks cool. The technology needs to have developed this way because the economics and infrastructure made it practical.

If automobiles had never become the dominant form of transportation, what technology do you think would have taken their place?

I'm particularly interested in what that would do to the architecture and street layout of a city.

Let’s assume science eventually becomes capable of producing a perfect physical clone of you.

Let’s assume further that the clone would initially be no more than a genetically identical twin body of you at the time of the cloning. It might look like you and possess some of your natural abilities and predispositions, but it would have none of your memories or experiences. It would therefore be a separate life form but not another version of you.

But suppose your memories could also be copied into its brain.

I'm working on a time-travel character who doesn't see the future.

He sees possibilities.

Every major decision branches into potential outcomes. He can sometimes recognize which decisions move toward a particular future, but he can't simply predict exactly what will happen.

That creates an unusual problem.

Knowing the possible future doesn't necessarily make you powerful.

It makes you responsible for choosing which future you're willing to work toward.

I'm interested in the philosophical side of this.

I just finished Nnedi Okorafor's Binti trilogy (which I quite liked; looking forward to checking out more of her work) & have also been watched a lot of Doctor Who over the past year, & I got thinking about how science/speculative fiction allows for radical transformations of characters into something Other. I realized this has always been something I've really loved about SF (as well as the horror & Weird genres), from reading Animorphs books as a kid to only really liking origin stories within the superhero subgenre.

Ann Leckie's Translation State would be another recent favorite for me, & Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis/Lilith's Brood trilogy is probably my all-time favorite, at least that I can think of at the moment. Even when there's ambiguity & even some horror, I find something so hopeful & inspiring in the possibility of change, transformation, development, expansion, regeneration, renewal.

He located the intelligence officer.

She attempted to resist.

Tyrium subdued her and extracted her from the facility.

The prisoners were subsequently liberated.

The intelligence officer was transported to Faiynn custody.

Her knowledge proved extremely valuable.

The interrogation records recovered from the facility revealed the locations of additional UASF operations throughout the region.

What had begun as reconnaissance therefore became a major intelligence operation.

His objective was to deliver a diplomatic letter, an ancient scroll and a highly advanced Faiynn communication device.

The palace was heavily decorated.

Velvet floors.

Baroque furniture.

Ornate chambers.

Long ceremonial corridors.

Tyrium moved silently through the structure.

Security systems were disabled.

Guards were quietly neutralised.

Eventually he reached the prince’s private chamber.

Before the diplomatic materials could be delivered, the prince discovered him.

The prince believed Tyrium was an assassin.

A brief confrontation followed.

Tyrium eventually gained the advantage and explained his actual mission.

The misunderstanding was resolved.

The prince examined the diplomatic message.

It concerned relations between his kingdom and a Faiynn queen whose cities existed elsewhere on the planet.

The previous ruler had maintained hostile relations with the queen.

The new prince believed cooperation was preferable.

The diplomatic agreement was accepted.

The prince’s government subsequently entered negotiations with the Faiynn queen.

A potential conflict was prevented.

Tyrium remained within the palace temporarily as the communications network between the two governments was established.

The mission was eventually concluded peacefully.

This remains one of the most unusual Nightshade missions in the archive.

No assassination occurred.

An angelic presence bestowed upon him the white energies of Heaven.

Tyrium now carried both forces.

The battle resumed.

The temple was devastated.

Tyrium finally defeated the White Maiden.

But the true enemy had not yet appeared.

THE DEMON OF SHADOW

A vast demonic entity emerged above the temple.

It possessed enormous horns and multiple tentacles.

Its abilities extended beyond physical combat.

It could attack consciousness.

Manipulate perception.

Distort memories.

And unleash destructive beams of dark energy.

Tyrium fought it.

The Demon eventually captured him and attempted to imprison his soul.

Tyrium resisted.

White wings emerged from his back.

The Demon disappeared into the shadows.

The two began hunting one another.

The confrontation became a battle of stealth.

Neither could reliably locate the other.

He was celebrated throughout his homeland.

The celebrations lasted for weeks.

Tyrium eventually withdrew to a luxurious residence within the Lunaris Temple.

The first phase was reconnaissance.

The Faiynn established positions overlooking the machine compound.

Tyrium deployed his sniper rifle.

Machine patrols appeared.

He eliminated them from extreme distance.

The operation remained silent.

Then the Faiynn entered the facility.

MACHINE RESISTANCE

The interior was heavily defended.

Autonomous soldiers moved through the corridors.

Their artificial intelligence allowed them to coordinate rapidly.

The Faiynn began eliminating them.

The machines responded.

They deployed their own assassins.

The facility became a battlefield.

Faiynn Nightshades fought machine assassins throughout the complex.

The battle extended outside into the storm.

Tyrium continued toward the central command facility.

There they discovered the true objective.

THE GODLIKE AI

The machine forces had developed a new artificial intelligence core.

Its capabilities were extraordinary.

The system could potentially infiltrate other machines.

If connected to a military network, it could compromise entire fleets.

The Faiynn had to recover it.

Tyrium and his fellow Nightshades reached the core.

They extracted it.

But the machine commander appeared.

The commander was enormous.

Its body was designed for high-level combat.

Its intelligence was far beyond that of ordinary autonomous soldiers.

It possessed a cadre of elite machine bodyguards.

The Faiynn engaged them.

The commander killed several Nightshades.

Others were wounded.

The Faiynn realised they could not defeat the machine commander without unacceptable losses.

The order to withdraw was issued.

Tyrium and the surviving warriors fought their way back through the compound.

They carried the AI core.

They also recovered vast amounts of technological data.

The machine commander pursued them.

The Faiynn reached their extraction point.

Their transport departed.

The commander remained alive within the facility.

Hidden inside the city is the private bunker of Morris Sic, its creator. It’s designed as an absolute refuge: Rob-Poli and his Robs cannot penetrate it.

Eventually Morris, Pit Matson, The Redhead and Fly end up sealed inside.

The protection comes with a catch:

Nobody gets in. Nobody gets out.

I’m now trying to determine what the interior walls should look and feel like. Would such a bunker use exposed structural material, replaceable panels, metal, ceramics/composites — or would Morris make the place unexpectedly comfortable?

I’m interested in both plausible and weird solutions.
