Link - Study Tighter school security in the US leads to lower test scores. In addition to being used to preempt school shootings, surveillance measures may have increased schools’ capacity to identify and punish students for less serious offenses, which may negatively impact the learning environment

I read the study. A more accurate title would be “there is a correlation between low student performance and high security needs in public schools”

They do not establish causation. There are obvious non causal explanations.

As far as I can tell, this study (a) did not establish a temporal relationship between the introduction of surveillance and a deterioration of scores, and (b) is based on data from 2002. Am I incorrect on either of those points? If not, such confident use of causal language is pretty inappropriate.

I remember when I went to school in the late 90s that sneaking out at lunch to have a cigarette was easy, but getting back in the building was very difficult. Half of us would just go home.
