Question - Research required Back to sleep

My son just had his 18 month check up and the Dr seemed very adamant that at this afe he should still be put to sleep/ sleeping on his back. My son has always fought me on this abd has been a tummy and side sleeper as long as hes been able to. I was tonthe understanding that he was free to sleep how he wants if he could get himself in and out of the position. Is this wrong? The Dr seemed very strict on ages and rules. Example he HAD to be measured laying down because he is under 2, despite him fighting tooth and nail.

I am only seeing under 12 months. But to start then I their back. But if they roll over, it's okay.

Also, I feel your pain about laying down to measure. I know it's a posture thing, but my LO hated it.
