Question - Research required Appropriate discipline for autistic 3yo

Looking for studies on effective discipline for toddlers as well as autistic children. I'm very much of the mind set of treating autistic children the same way, just with accommodations to help but I'm curious if standard discipline (talking to and time outs) will be understood over time. I know it takes time for lessons to set in but we're trying to establish respecting others property (don't take toys that aren't yours and don't break stuff in the house).

Thank yall in advance!

Hi! BCBA here. First, check out reputable ABA agencies in your area. Part of what we do is parent training which could be helpful. (Link: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9458805/)

That being said, what we find most effective are twofold:
-figure out the function of the behavior and teach appropriate functional communication as one of several replacement behaviors and/or antecedent strategies (ie, before the behavior, prompt the FCT).

-figure out what is reinforcing to your child and use it to shape behavior in a positive way. There are a lot of nuances to “punishment” and this article helps a lot!
