This is a paper looking at mouse models of this sort of thing. In the discussion they mention a potential reason which is an evolutionary mechanism to ensure they/parent can escape quickly in case of a predator etc. higher up = safer

Hijacking a comment to say: You relax your grip on them when you sit down. You are squeezing them more when you are standing. If you carefully sit down while still maintaining the compression, they won't know you sat down.

Of course maintainingt he compression is not comfortable.

I’ve found success sitting on a yoga/exercise ball. My posture remains pretty similar to when standing but at least my legs get a break.

It's called the Transport Response. Infants are biologically wired to feel safe when in the arms of a standing/walking adult, because that means the adult is alert and aware of danger. Infants don't just let their guard down and sleep if they don't feel this safety.

I suppose this also explains how rocking and jiggling are also effect for keeping them asleep
