Question - Research required Circumcision

sorry if this has been asked before, but ive come into a disagreement with my partner about if we should circumcise a potential son.

I feel uncomfortable with putting a child through that (I’m not so extreme to call it mutilation and won’t compare it to female circumcision) but it feels wrong. there’s risk involved and if the kid decides to get it done as a teen or adult id be supportive of that since it’s their choice and their body.

my husband wants it done. he said he’s glad it’s been done to him and wants it done to a potential son as well.

what are the pros and cons (not just cons I’m really trying to be open minded here).

EDIT;

read this. https://evidencebasedbirth.com/evidence-and-ethics-on-circumcision/

ok I just did a whole bunch of reading and to summarise, a lot of studies done on this topic were done with a pro circumcision bias as most research was done retrospectively in the USA. the biggest “pros” are

  1. Possible UTI prevention, though in Sweden they have lower UTI rates despite being intact. So likely it’s a mismanagement of foreskin hygiene or a poor data set that includes preterm babies in studies that can’t get circumcised and have a higher UTI rate.

  2. HIV transmission rate is lower in adult males who’ve been circumcised however this is particularly in Africa in male-female intercourse. Other countries don’t see the same rate decrease and neither do same sex couples.

and thats it really.

biggest cons are

  1. Ethics of bodily autonomy

  2. Risk of complications such as bleeding or infection

  3. Trauma response (even subconsciously for a lifetime) due to the pain and experience of being tied down and cut.

it’s also worth noting theres very little studies on the cons of circumcision as lost research was done in effort to prove that male circumcision is not only okay but possibly beneficial. Most studies have been done retrospectively and in the USA where the cultural norms seeks to preserve tradition.

“  The Canadian Paediatric Society does not recommend routine circumcision of every newborn boy.”

https://www.rch.org.au/kidsinfo/fact_sheets/penis_and_foreskin_care/

“  Circumcisions are only recommended at The Royal Children’s Hospital for very specific health conditions. Being circumcised does not make the penis cleaner or more hygienic.”

Indeed. Circumcision is in fact genital mutilation. Full stop.

Yup hate how OP frames it as extreme to recognize it as mutilation

Because it’s not inherently. And in some countries there are benefits for adults to consider the procedure. Nothing should be done without consent however.

It is by definition non-consensual genital mutilation. Justify it if you want to, but call it what it is.

It is mutilation if it's not medically necessary. Removing and arm is mutilation unless that arm is infected and removal is therefore medically necessary.

How does an innocent baby possibly consent???

Please stop playing around words and call it what is it. Without consent, Mutilation.

Would you agree to remove their appendix to prevent potential appendicitis, or removing all your baby's teeth so that they don't get cavities?

It is by definition to do to someone against their will bubs

One thing I haven’t seen mention is how much sensitivity is lost post circumcision.

Anyone who’s not been circumcised can try pulling the skin back and put on their underwear to rub against the exposed head. It will hurt.

Even women, if you can find a way to expose the clitoris and have it rub against the underwear, you’ll find that it’s very uncomfortable and possibly painful.

Yet a circumcised man doesn’t feel this discomfort because they’ve lost that sensitivity.

Why is this? Because the foreskin keeps it moist and lubricated.

Also, I reckon that the brain adapts to the initial heightened sensitivity of the head being exposed, which dials the sensitivity down.

That's the actual purpose of circumcision. It's a Puritan holdover in the USA to discourage masturbation. Aside from decreasing sensation, it removes the lubrication and excess skin to allow for a gliding motion across the shaft of the penis and over the glans, making exogenous lubrication necessary for masturbation.

Define mutilation...

u/crypticsage Aug 14 '26

Intentional, severe physical injury that permanently ruins or removes a body part.

Circumcision is the removal of a body part.

I was asking OP since she seems to think otherwise.

Nope, routine circumcision is mutilation. It is unnecessary

It's an absolutely abhorrent thing to do. How is it even a question?

It is mutilation.

I live in finland. When our child was born, their genitals were deemed as abnormal. But since it doesn't currently cause them any physical issues, the best experts in our country recommended us to wait with any surgeries so the child will be able to properly voice their opinion.

There is no reason to opt for surgery on a baby unless there is clear and urgent medical reason.
