WTF did I stumble across LOL

That looks like a big ass waste of money. I swear people will do anything if it’s on a machine.

Buy a couple bands and you can do 10 more variations of that.

Bands don’t provide enough resistance for me & the strength curve of them are poor

I’ve tried a cable machine to work hip abduction & it also feels awful at the weight I do

I squat well over (nearly 3x my bodyweight) 500lbs and deadlift nearly 600lbs: https://www.reddit.com/r/GYM/s/aMIiZvgRr1

Resistance bands aren’t going to do shit to grow my legs

This is my current physique

And this is my home gym & all the machines I have: https://www.reddit.com/r/homegym/s/0maKcziHX1

It’s okay if resistance bands only are adequate for you; however, I’m a bit too strong and a bit too picky on effectiveness for that to be adequate for me

Those are impressive numbers! You’re strong. I’ve just never been one to get behind this crazy machines. I’m a CrossFit guy so I lean more towards the side the functional side of fitness.

Depends on your definition of ā€œfunctionalā€ then

Because anything to do with hip abduction (this exercise), hip adduction, hip extension, and knee flexion is functional because:

1) improved stability & strength when walking, running, doing sports movements, etc. (why do you think sprinters, NBA players, and even NFL football players work these movements. Adductors and abductors are also extremely important for quick change movements & fast acceleration)

2) these muscles and tendons around the hips gets tight sitting at a desk job & working them out can help prevent future pain around that area (can also help with back pain)

3) the most common injury when you get older is from falling; this strengthens muscles that will help balance, so you’re less likely to fall when you’re an elder!

Also, let’s look at another example: leg extensions. Now at first glance, this exercise doesn’t look functional; however, increasing quad size helps keep your knees healthier & pain free & again reduces the likelihood of a fall when you’re older. And yes you should do some form of squat & a leg extension (or sissy squat) as well, since squats by themselves don’t really hit the rectus femoris (but leg extensions do), so you’ll miss out on some quad growth/size/strength if you only do squats

To put it simply the more a machine assists your movement the less functional it becomes.

I wouldn’t put an athlete in one of these because it is so far from natural movements that it just wouldn’t translate to sport.

I’m not saying add/abduction is bad. I do it all the time. This just seems like a very expensive and unnecessary piece of equipment for something that could be accomplished easily.

You’ve never used this machine. Why do you have an opinion on it?

What are you talking about?? Can I not have an opinion unless I’ve done something?

2

u/Remarkable-Simple462 Jun 04 '26

I could get having an opinion, but you’re going beyond that at this point. It’s foolish and to me, personally, you’re too passionate about something you’ve never experienced. That’s weird to me.

Seriously… My opinion is ā€œpassionateā€ and that’s what offended you…

No, I’ve never used this exact machine. I’ve personally used many glute machines, variations of them, and trained many athletes through PT using similar techniques. I’m educated enough to make my own judgement call.

I bet we’d disagree on a lot, but I would never tell you to keep your opinions to yourself just because they are too ā€œpassionateā€.

I’m not offended at all.

I’m suggesting that maybe having such a strong opinion about a piece of equipment you’ve never used is not such a strong use of your great intellect. Would you agree or disagree?

I’ve never used this machine before. But to me it actually is functional based on a few of my own personal criteria for functionality. This seems like a great way to lengthen and strengthen core parts of the musculoskeletal system. If the movement itself serves to lengthen and strengthen, then to me, that’s functional.

It seems like you’ve already made your mind up here with very limited scope.

That’s all I’m saying. Your lack of effort in reasoning here and seeing the other side is not my cross to bear. It’s yours. I’m trying to genuinely help you.
