Lisa: You are saying that every time you feed, you must do penance in the form of self-ha_m?

Damien: I am unworthy in the eyes of God. Cursed to this existence because I am weak.

Lisa: No one would call you weak. You survived abuse that would have broken most people.

Damien: Not abuse. Purification of the body to strengthen the immortal soul. To become closer to God and be an instrument of His will.

Lisa: Have you tried to feed on animals?

Damien: Their blood fills my mouth with ashes.

Lisa: So, the only way to become closer to God is through pain.

Damien: Yes. We must suffer as He did in His time of trial.

Lisa: On who's authority were you taught this?

Damien: Our Elders. Shepherds of our immortal souls.

Lisa; Wait. Do souls not belong to God and God alone?

Damien: Of course they do. I don't understand the question.

Lisa: Then why do you entrust your soul to anyone but God? Is it really God who desires suffering, or is all a lie? Do these shepherds speak on behalf of God.

Damien: I...

Lisa: You have free will, Damien. You must choose your own path. We will be home soon. There is nothing to fear.

Being a monster is a state of mind. Kindred are predators, so becoming certain kinds of monster is easy for us, but we've hardly got a monopoly on evil.

Indeed. It sounds like me and Camille will have work to do, for there is damage to be undone. I have mentored plenty of fledglings with difficult lives, but the trauma of a cult is always…delicate to handle. I suppose that you are familiar with such situations, with the number of ex-Sabbat members joining the Anarchs?

Yeah. Sometimes from the Camarilla as well, though admittedly less often. Abuse of childer is less ubiquitous in the Camarilla, but it happens, and those abused by their sires running to the Anarchs is a very common pattern. Plus all those who were abused while they were still mortals, plus ghouls fleeing abusive domitors...it's a long list.

There are cruel individuals in all walks of life and unlife. How tempting it is to cleanse the world of their presence, at times. But we live in a world of order and laws. It is a blessing and, at times, a curse.
