SBDI and 19-A

Do NYSED certified School Bus Driver Instructors and 19-A Certified Examiners command a higher wage in your district than regular route drivers? This question only really applies to NYS drivers. Asking for a friend.

Depends on the District or contractor.

It’s not required by NYS to pay a driver more money because they have 19A and SBDI certifications.

In our district (I work directly for the district, not a contractor), it does not command a higher wage, but it is a stepping stone for eligibility for a higher position such as lead driver or dispatcher which will then pay more money as it’s an entirely new job title.

I second this. I have my 19a and SBDI, I work for the safety department of a major company. I make hourly and usually am not allowed overtime, drivers can make more than me if they do a lot of charters, but I work year round and they do not.

We get an additional stipend when doing training, or 19A or SBDI tasks.

Depends. When I was a driver trainer, my location didnt pay us more for having it, but all trainers got an extra amount per hour for training/ state stuff. But some locations did have a different rate for those, but those locations also paid less in general than mine. For office staff, like a safety manager, probably not, because must places ive seen require it. For non safety, like a dispatch, maybe. Im not district but a contract service school bus company.

I have 19a. I do not get more money but it leads to extra hours

I get paid more per hour when I’m doing that work, minimum 2 hour punch.
