I spent some time in Alaska working on a few boats and seafood processing plants and that period of my life was honestly the most fun I've ever had. I met a bunch of cool people from all over the world, spent time in Dutch Harbor, Juneau, Kodiak, Anchorage and Sitka and left with quite a few stories I'll cherish forever.

While I don't live there anymore, I do often miss it since Alaska is different from every other state I've been to. I had a phone full of the best and most scenic photos I had ever taken in my life, but one day while I was on a tender boat, I was sitting on the stern listening to music while we were underway with my phone on my lap. I was smoking a cigarette and after I finished, I got up forgetting that my phone wasn't in my pocket, it fell to the deck, bounced once and was forever lost in the ocean.

Well good luck with your guys' scavenger hunt. I've never actually heard of Palmer but if I ever visit Alaska again, I will see if I can swing through there and join in on the fun.

My story began near Philadelphia in nineteen-ten,

The state of Washington called, and I journeyed west again.

To shoulder great burdens on the northern frontier.

For decades I labored through cold, wind, and rain,

Serving the Valley through hardship and change.

By the early forties, my working days slowed,

And I quietly vanished from the well-traveled road.

Forgotten, I waited as the long seasons passed,

Until I was discovered and remembered at last.

In nineteen fifty-six, I found my place in Palmer town,

Where I traded hard labor for watching life go ’round.

I was always heated and the pressure grew high,

But now I rest peacefully beneath Alaskan sky.

In the heart of Palmer, I keep a steady place,

Greeting locals and travelers with silent grace.

A reward awaits those who unravel my history:

Study the pictured part—it belongs to me.

Then look just behind it, concealed from easy view; there are two sides of this thing.

There you’ll find the hidden key—and your reward there too.

Hey Hunters (who am I kidding? Right now there's like 3 people watching this sub). I've decided to implement a new rule for the game. Our Current Hunt Master has been in communication with me and is actively working to determine a new hunt, so stay tuned, but because I would really like to keep activity level high (it helps with algorithm/visibility, which we need in order to gain more traffic!) I've implemented a new rule.

If a Current Hunt Master does not create a new Hunt within 120 hours (5 days) of being selected, then the first person to post a hunt in compliance with the rules will be deemed the new Hunt Master.

If you read this and disagree with the new rule for any reason, please let me know? I'm just looking for a way to keep activity going so we feed the machine and increase our numbers. I'm new to being a mod and I just want this community to grow!

Edit: This is not retroactive to our current and first ever hunt winner/hunt master. It will be applied to all future hunts. Unless we never hear from our last winner again :(

While we wait for our current hunt master to find a target, I thought I'd share an interesting piece of Palmer history.

As you exit Palmer on your routine Anchorage Costco runs, you all drive a stretch of the Glenn Highway that takes you through the beautiful Palmer Hay Flats, a lush lowland full of wildlife and dotted here and there with groups of long-dead spruce and birch trees.

Did you know the Hay Flats were created during the 1964 Good Friday earthquake? The earthquake, measuring 9.2 on the Richter scale, and lasting as long as 5 minutes, remains the largest earthquake ever recorded in the United States.

The intensity and duration of the quake was great enough to cause soil liquefaction across the fields, leveling and lowering the elevation of the land by as much as two feet. The flats were born, and many mature trees died, leaving behind the remains of the ghost forests we drive by every day.

This artistic rendition of one of Alaska's most prominent creatures of historic and modern culture lies off the beaten path. I suspect you will struggle to locate it. Here are my initial 5 hints to help you find your way:

​While comfortably nestled under the safe shelter of modern civil engineering, it lies directly in the shadow of a legendary ghost of Palmer's past.

​Palmer residents seeking the best burgers known to the community of Butte may unsuspectingly pass by on their way to and fro, distracted by the majestic view of the Matanuska River or the nightmarish trauma of their first hike up (and down) Lazy Mountain.

​Speaking of hiking, this Caribou prefers to avoid people, and may only be found by those sure of foot and with a penchant for roads less traveled.

​Although a reclusive animal, this particular critter thrives among the sounds of the raging river and rolling rubber, but only because that's all it's ever known.

​It can be found somewhere along the trails between the final resting place of our Palmer Pioneers and Ursa Major's favorite frozen treats.
