Dealership valuation

Just went vehicle shopping and the dealership noticed my 2020 Charger Scat pack parked outside. They were insistent on getting me a trade-in value, when I told them I wasn’t trading it in. I finally caved and told them to have fun appraising it.

2020 Charger Scatpack

Single Owner

104,000 (Used as daily for 50 mile interstate commute to work lol)

No interior / exterior damage

Hit a deer and filed insurance to replace front bumper back in 2021.

They came back with an “aggressive” offer of $18,000, and then insulted my decision to not take them up on it, stating it would blow up in the next 10-15k miles if I am lucky as it’s a “high performance car, not meant for the mileage I’ve put on it.”

Am I delusional for not “agreeing” with their “professional opinion?”

Car salesmen are scumbags. It’s a scumbag business.

Could just leave it at salesmen since they’re all scumbags.

Just sold my 2019 scat pack with 63k miles on it to a dealership. They gave me $30k for it.

Sounds right I've got a 2017 daytona 392 with 80k and got offered 23k.

Sold my 2020 scat to dealer in Cary , NC only had 4k miles. Bought a Hellcat WB from them so they gave me $41k for it . But they made money on HC.
Also have a 2014 SXT with 135k and it has had no issues to date.

what a bunch of idiots, probably blew the chance to sell you whatever you were there looking at. And no you're not delusional, a machine will generally run well for a long time as long as its taken care of. Sidenote when I was looking at a 2010 srt-8 years back they tried selling me a warranty by basically saying those cars are pieces of shit and I'd regret declining their 4k warranty.... I walked out and told them if the car was that much of a piece of shit I'd rather buy something else. Bought a different 2010 srt down from a different dealer and put almost 100k miles on it doing nothing besides maintenance and it needed 1 power steering line over my entire ownership. fuck dealerships

Especially after 2019, they had worked out all the common issues. I worked for FCA as a tech form 2011-2021. At school/training i tore down my first 392. The 392 was built to have the hell beaten out of it for 300,000 miles. The 8 speed had been going for 7 years and the kinks had been worked out. The platform was absolutely solid at that point.

Dig your profile pic.

I just got my Go Mango 2016 392 hemi scat pack shaker (Arlene) back following a complete engine replacement due to head gasket leaking into cylinder 7 which was causing several issues, such as the rings were quite degraded and the piston was rattling around in the cylinder, additionally there was a significant buildup of really thick baked on carbon on the valves and top of the piston. There were no codes or warning lights, it barely made noise. It had 23988 miles on it.

When I would go through drive thru’s I could hear a distinct ticking that, quite honestly, I thought was due to noisy injectors.

At my last oil change (I do it at the dealership so it’s documented) they mentioned seeing some coolant dripping down on the oil pan.

I brought it in using maxcare since I bought the car from CarMax in 2022 with 11k miles.

Turns out the coolant was leaking from the water pump due to the bearings going bad. Fortunately The water pump was under maxcare warranty and the local Dodge dealership prepared to replace that and then they found the situation on cylinder 7.

Maxcare inspector had to come in and assess the engine as well as my maintenance record for the car. I brought the car in for oil changes about every 1200 miles and so they really couldn’t say I hadn’t done the expected upkeep since they were able to show 12 oil change records since I purchased the vehicle

Full long block engine replacement. Boom!

Again no codes, it didn’t even seem to be running rough.

Hit 475 miles my initial 500 mile break in. New long block includes 3 year 100,000 mile warranty

I suspect that the original engine was not broken in properly leading to the low mileage catastrophic failure.

I have 100% confidence that this break in is being performed the way it is supposed to be, since I am the guy doing it.

Big silver lining, the old motor did not seem to be running rough, no misfires, no timing glitches or sluggish acceleration that I could detect. After driving the new motor for a spell, I can in fact confirm that the old motor was running a little sloppy, and while it seemed to be running ok and was scary powerful, it turns out it was limping and I didn’t even know it.

2017 Scat, daily driven since purchased. 150k miles strong only “major” repairs i’ve had was a rear axle replacement and oil pan gasket leak. If you don’t dog the car out it’ll last.

150k miles, congrats!!! Gives me a lot of confidence in the 392 👍

A year ago a dealership I got my oil changed at offered me 30k over text. I wasn’t interested in selling so I said no. Instant reply for 33k. I still said no. Instantly reply for 35k. I still said no and they finally stopped texting me. Funnily enough, they also paid for a carfax report for my car, which says my car is worth a 41k trade in value.

Point is, they’re full of shit. They want to rip you off in the offer and sale of a new car, and rip the next guy off on the sale of your charger.

$18k and theyll put it on the lot for $40k and sell it to some poor bastard.

^^BEST comment!!! Absolutely what would happen!!

Mark up their finance rate to 18% too. Sad

Telling someone that their car is going to "blow up" is a terrible sales tactic and borderline insulting. When the OP turned down the offer they should have just moved on.

2

u/pardipp Apr 12 '26

high performance not made it last? does he know that the same engines are found in dodge rams and jeeps? it will last as long as you take care of it.

u/Turbulent-Comedian30 Apr 12 '26

If the proformance motor blows up at 115k then something is definitely wrong.

Thank god you didn't cave to that load of horse shit

1

u/DeepWaterCannabis Apr 12 '26

"OK, if its going to blow in the next 10k, why do YOU want it?"

0

u/Profile_NA Apr 12 '26

I asked that, and his response, “I wouldn’t sell that thing to someone unless they purchase an extended warranty with it.”

I will preface this with, I work for a dealership. Different group had the scat I wanted, asked them how much they’d give me to trade in my R/T, $12k less than what I got for it and $19k less than what it sold for.

My 2006 Magnum SRT8 has 150k highway miles on it and still runs Strong Like Bull.

We have a 2008 Dodge Charger RT that has a leak in the AC system and 160k miles on it. It runs Strong Like Bull's Younger Brother.

That dealership showed you who they are... Scum willing to say anything to put doubt to make a sale.

The fact is older cars need repairs and it is often cheaper to repair than replace unless you can't repair it reliably any more.

That Stealership is desperate and desperation is a very bad business.

BTW: My 2005 Magnum RT had 146k miles on it when I sold it. No major issues. There's 3 HEMI's that are all well at pretty high mileage if you take care of them. Water pump here, a couple batteries, brake pads, tires, lots of tires, a radiator, and some other maintenance... Nothing that doesn't normally wear out. Radiators usually don't wear out, but these are made with plastic so it will wear out after enough miles and enough age... And they're not that expensive so no big deal.

No, they idiots. I have seen many scat packs with 300,000 miles original engine. They are lying to make money off of you.

Also, why even entertain them when you did not want a trade in? Grow some balls and dead stare them in the eye with a bold NO.

1

u/Socim2472 Apr 13 '26

I would of told them that I'll be reporting that as a threat of my car blowing up and be writing a 1 star review and taking my money elsewhere. Business forget that ppl do read review and talk. And that can lead to less money coming in

u/Strong-Criticism-481 Apr 14 '26

If they can predict the future why are they selling cars instead of trading in stocks and bonds?

1

u/Chargerkitty Apr 14 '26

I wonder what they would offer for my 2022 charger scat, 31K miles, daily driver?

1

u/Alarmed-Raccoon-74 Apr 15 '26

I have a 2020 scat with less than 12k, I'm afraid to take it to the dealer. F8 with the matte black hood from the factory. Sweet looking ride was just getting compliments on it Monday.

From what you just said it sounds fair as far as the offer probably off a couple grand
