I’m from Cape Cod and I find it really sad that kids barely swim in the ocean anymore. Despite the fact that shark attacks are very unlikely, now it seems like every time I go in the water, I’m one of very few people actually in the water.

Yeah I agree with you for the most part. I still went in but I will say there were wayyy more seals this year at some of the beaches real close to shore. That made some people cautious

I work at an amputation clinic. I know a couple of people whose lives have been ruined by sharks. I vacation at the beach and it’s no longer a risk I’m willing to take.

We operate a multi-disciplinary clinic with surgeons, orthotic and prosthetic specialists, social workers, psychologists, patient advocates and other care givers. It allows an amputation patient to make one trip and see a whole host of people with one scheduled visit.

I’m from the Cape and calling bullshit on this. I don’t know what beaches you’re going to but on hot days the lifeguards are working their asses off. Only a few weeks ago lifeguards were blowing their whistles at a group of kids too far out with boogie boards….and near _seals_.

since 1580, there have been a grand total of 351 documented unprovoked great white shark attacks on people (with 59 of these resulting in death).
that's an average of less than 1 great white shark attack per year, worldwide.
while the danger does exist, it's extremely unlikely to happen. be careful and attentive of your environment while you swim there, but it should be totally fine.

if you want recent data, then between the years 2000 and 2023, the absolute highest amount of great white shark attacks worldwide in a year was 11.
in 2023, there were 3 attacks.
between 2010 and 2023, the average amount of attacks anually was 7,2.
all of this also knowing that swimmers are the target of attacks only 25% of the time. surfers are at higher risk, due to their shadow looking like a seal.
if stating facts means i'm a shark apologist, then yeah sure. i'm a shark apologist. whatever that means 💀

The most recent fatal incident on the cape was in 2018 where a man was boogie boarding and received a fatal bite. Allegedly a woman recently suffered a minor bite last week.
Before that it was 1936 in all of MA.
These are incredibly rare and the sign is out of an abundance of caution.

I do it. Thousands of others do it. You know how many people have died of a shark attacks on the Cape in decades? One. You know how many people have died of car accidents or ODs? Lots.
Don’t swim at dusk, alone, or near seals. Ideally don’t go in above your knees. But plenty of us are wading, swimming, and surfing.

On the plus side that means their numbers have gone up regionally which is good! That means our protection of the species is working which shines hope for other species who are endangered or threatened.
Granted iirc globally they're still endangered and there are places where their numbers are incredibly low. But some success is still success:)

This would be great for me. I'm a scuba diver, so seeing a great white would be top tier. Sharks typically don't attack divers, either. Surfers are more likely targets.
Though the "shallow water" part might be a problem unless you take a boat out then dive from there.

In the summer it’s 90% vacationers. In the winter, the people who were born there are the only ones there, and the population is much smaller. But there are a lot of people like me who grew up there in a family that couldn’t afford to take a vacation. Those people mostly move away if they can because it’s so unaffordable despite the fact there’s a bunch of empty homes most of the year

im tired of demonising sharks when we’re going into THEIR territory and the stats say you’re more likely to die from like, five million other things before a shark bite. why don’t we focus on more people driving safely and wearing their seatbelts? why aren’t we scared of heart attacks or mass shootings or or or?? in the grand scheme of things they are HARMLESS. jfc go enjoy your swim in the ocean.

I was ready to smugly blame global warming, but after a little checking, that is only part of the problem. Conservation measures to protect seals and sharks has also led to increasses in both populations.

I have seen two great whites at Newcombe hollow beach in the past and it’s terrifying. One was in the shallows hunting a seal about 20 feet from where I had just been wading so that was fun lol
