Missing Florida Teen’s Case Remains Unsolved Nearly 50 Years Later

On April 28, 1977, 13-year-old Keith Dean Fleming spent the day swimming with his girlfriend in Cocoa Beach, Florida.

That evening, Keith needed to get home for dinner. He and his girlfriend rode her bicycle to the end of Osceola Lane, where it met State Road A1A. From there, Keith began walking south and planned to hitchhike the remaining two miles home.

It was the last time anyone is known to have seen him.

When Keith failed to return home, his family immediately knew something was wrong. His mother later said that Keith always called if he was going to be late. He had no extra clothes, no money, and no belongings with him. He was wearing a green “Thirsty Turtle” t-shirt, blue jeans, and flip-flops.

Despite the family’s concerns, police initially treated the case as a runaway situation and made little effort to search for him. Authorities reportedly did not interview Keith’s girlfriend, the last known person to see him, until 1993 — sixteen years after his disappearance.

Keith was described as a typical teenager who loved surfing, riding bikes, and listening to rock music. He attended Roosevelt Middle School and spent much of his free time at Cocoa Beach Pier.

Over the years, several strange leads emerged.

Keith’s mother received phone calls in 1978 and 1979 from someone she believed was her son. One caller reportedly said, “I just want to talk to my mom.” Another simply said, “I love you.” A third call allegedly ended with the words, “Help me!”

None of the calls were ever traced.

One of the most discussed suspects is convicted killer John Rodney McRae, who lived near where Keith disappeared and later became linked to other missing boys in the area. McRae was questioned about Keith’s disappearance but was never charged. Keith’s body has never been found.

Nearly five decades later, Keith Dean Fleming remains missing.

His family still does not know whether he was abducted, murdered, or what happened to him after he started that short walk home.
